PERFORMANCE & SLA’S
OUR NEW “ALWAYS ON” WORLD NOW DEMANDS 100% UPTIME,BUT BEING UP DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN YOU ARE MEETING SLA’S
@dez_blanchfield
THE NEED TO MANAGE
APPLICATION PERFORMANCE
AND AVAILABILITY SLA’S HAS
UNDERGONE A FUNDAMENTAL
SHIFT IN THE LAST DECADE
@dez_blanchfield
Once upon a time we’d have a single server running multiple services and monitoring life was relatively straight forward..
Is the server up and responding
Is the operating system online
Are the applications up and running
Are the app services responding
Can users connect to the services
Is the helpdesk phone ringing
Who’s turn is it to get doughnuts
WHEN THINGS WERE A LOT SIMPLER
@dez_blanchfield
The time when a few good application, systems, network and database admins could meet performance SLA’s is long gone..
By 1996 database driven apps transformed with the Internet boom
In the early 2000’s we had to cope with the Dot Com boom
Then Web 2.0 caused yet another upward spike with smartphones
In 2016 we’re now faced with a quagmire of Cloud, Big Data & Mobility
Next we need to address real-time M2M, Smart Buildings & Smart Cities
Then the next big wave is the heady challenge of the Internet of Things
And we’re also now building A.I. & Cognitive Computing into everything
WE CAN’T DO IT BY HAND ANY MORE
@dez_blanchfield
THE COMPLEXITY OF TODAY’S
STANDARD APPLICATION
STACK IS FAR BEYOND
HUMAN CAPABILITIES
@dez_blanchfield
Applications & databases, have become so large, and so complex, that managing performance is a science in itself..
On-site / Off-site / Data Centers
Physical servers / Virtual servers
Cloud / IaaS / PaaS / SaaS
SDN / NFV / Micro Services vs Apps
Kubernetes / Docker / Swarms
Traditional DB / Hadoop Big Data
Mobility / BYOD / M2M / IoT / I.A.
HYPERSCALE, COMPLEXITY & SPEED
@dez_blanchfield
MANAGING PERFORMANCE
SLA’S AT TODAY’S SPEED AND
SCALE REQUIRES TOOLS AND
SYSTEMS, BY DEFAULT !!

This is a high level application design diagram for the OpenStack open source software defined Cloud stack.. Yes.. High level !!
DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME KIDS !!
