United Arab profitcovers prior losses

While not disclosing actual figures pending release of the1980 Annual Report, United Arab Shipping Company’sChief Executive, Abdul Aziz Salatt has announced profits in1980 will cover the major part of its carried forward lossesfrom its first two years of operations.

Speaking from the head office in Kuwait, Mr. Salattreferred to the financial strength of U.A.S.C. as a result ofits being owned by the Arabian States of Iraq, Kuwait,Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and the United ArabEmirates. The 500 million Kuwaiti dinar company, with KD230 million paid up so far, commenced operations in April1977 and endured the subsequent steep downturn inworldwide trading up to 1979. Like other major shippingcompanies, some of which had to cease trading, U.A.S.C.sustained serious losses during that period.

With its fleet of 53 dry cargo liners, and seven owned andsix chartered container vessels, U.A.S.C. operated 280 sail-ings from the U.S.A., Far East and Europe to Red Sea andArabian Gulf ports during 1980. These sailings carried acombined lift of 3.7 million tons and 50,000 t.e.u, cargoes.1981 prospects are that total sailings will increase to 320 tolift in excess of 4.3 million tons and 90,000 containers. Suf-ficient profit is expected that all previous losses would beoffset.

Mr. Salatt, the first Arab chief executive of the company, further stated that while U.A.S.C., like any other com-merical company, expects to make reasonable profits, it alsoremains protective of the interests of the peoples of the Ara-bian Gulf states. For that reason it persuaded other shippingcompanies operating in its trades not to pass on to con-signees the excessively high insurance premiums proposedinsurance underwriters as a result of the war between Iraqand Iran. The saving to exporters and importers was and ismillions of dollars.

Looking to the future, Mr. Salatt said U.A.S.C. has in-vited bids for the building of six container vessels, each witha capacity of 1,800 t.e.u, and is undertaking studies for theoperation of specialized vessels for the carriage of vehiclesand grain cargoes.

SHIP VIA THE

PORT OF HOUSTON

West Mrica,1947.Thirty-three years ago, when Delta Line pioneered

regular U.S. Flag service from the Gulf to West Africa, there were few developed harbors along the entire3,000-mile coastline from Dakar to Matadi.

Each voyage was an adventure. Our ships wouldsail along the coast and anchor just beyond the surf.Cargoes were loaded onto small boats powered bymen and oars. It was a demanding test of skill andseamanship, an experience not soon forgotten by thecrews of those Delta ships.

Delta helped establish trade with the nations ofWest Africa, and continues to play a vital role in theeconomic development of the region.

Today, we serve the modern ports of West Africawith five purpose-built vessels, that sail frequentlyfrom all major U.S. Gulf ports. These great shipsare backed by an experienced team at home, and anetwork of the best agents on the African continent.

And it’s the same wherever we go in the world-South America, Central America, the Caribbean. In50 countries, on three continents, Delta is committedto service, integrity and excellence.

Taiwanese visitto buy American

Carrying a shopping list involving $1.1 billion, the sixth"Buy American" mission from Taipei, Taiwan, visitedHouston recently during its 21-city tour covering 20 states.

The purpose of the mission was to foster closer economicties between the United States and Taiwan, and to helpreduce the trade imbalance between the two countries. Lastyear, the two-way trade between the Republic of China andthe United States exceeded $11 billion, an increase of nearly30 per cent from 1979, according to the U.S. Department ofCommerce. In 1980, the trade registered a balance of about$2 billion in favor of the Republic of China.

The 50-member buyer’s mission was headed by BenjaminC.C. Lu of the Republic of China’s Board of Foreign Trade. While in Houston the mission signed a contract for the pur-chase of cotton and industrial commodities valued at morethan $61 million.

The first procurement mission from Taipei arrived in theU.S. in February, 1978, and the fifth one in March last year.During these "buy American" tours, the Republic of Chinabought industrial and agricultural products from Americancompanies valued at more than $4.4 billion. In 1980, thecountry, measuring 14,000 square miles with a populationof 17 million, became the eighth largest trading partner ofthe United States.
