Our shul! Our jewel! Our home!

This time of year is always meaningful as the holiday ofPesach quickly approaches and we welcome back manyfamilies who were away for the winter season. We hope itwas a healthy and enjoyable period and look forward to anexciting summer. This summer in particular there will bemuch exhilaration, joy and celebration for our synagogue. We’re calling it ‘Our 65th Reunion’!

It was on August 13, 1953 that the House of Israel opened its doors to the Jewishfamilies living in Ste Agathe and Baruch Hashem (thank G-d), these doors neverclosed. With deep appreciation to our founders, leaders and supporters our countryshul has become the jewel and home to so many; 65 years of providing a place ofworship, community and friendship to our members and visitors. An extraordinaryGala is planned for early summer and we hope you will celebrate this nostalgic timewith us. The House of Israel is a blessed place and it is with your help that we areable to continue to serve the entire Laurentians.

Leadership requires caring for another, integrity and wisdom. It was 33 yearsago, during the first years of serving as Rabbi, when I got to know Frances &Gerry Kessner, two outstanding people and leaders. With a heavy heart we wishFrances and family much strength and bracha on Gerry’s OBM shocking anduntimely passing. His loyalty, friendship and commitment will serve as aneternal legacy to us all.

I recall one of my first Shabbat messages; a lesson which continues to guide methroughout my service to this community; it’s how we measure success.

An old timer arrives in America and applies for a job as a trolley controller. Theinstructions were ‘pick up and drop off passengers on Delancey Street’. This man wasambitious and on the third day returned with an enormous sum of money. Beamingwith pride he explained to his superior how Delancey Street seemed so quiet withlittle action; and so, after two days he decided, on his own, to take another route. Hechose a street just a few blocks away. Broadway! A street where large crowd of peoplewere getting on and off trolley cars. “Am I not a success??” the beaming controllerasked. “NO” was the reply from his superior, “Success is staying on track!”

In a few days we will sit with family and friends celebrating our freedom as a HolyPeople. Seven weeks later we received G-d’s Torah. Our existence and success isalways dependent on our task…. staying on track – A Holy People and a light untoall nations!

Am Yisrael Chai! This Year in Jerusalem!Rabbi Emanuel Carlebach

With winter coming to an end and webegin the spring and summer season,we look forward to welcoming back ourmembers who were away for the winterbreak.

We had several events over the lastwinter months, all of which were veryenjoyable. Even though the weatherwas sometimes brutal, we still had wellattended Minyans and plentifulKiddushim.

However one of the most rewarding experiences was raisingmoney for the Ste. Agathe Academy High School students to beable to visit the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Museum. It wastruly an eye opening experience for them to learn what the Jewishpeople had actually gone through during the Holocaust. After theirvisit, the students were invited back to the Synagogue, whereRabbi Carlebach gave a lesson on the Holocaust & Judaism. Aseveryone was leaving, a young girl turned to me and asked if itwould be okay if she went back into the chapel to pray. She wasthere a few minutes and when she finished, she thanked the Rabbiand myself. That proved to be a very emotional moment for me asit showed the positive effect this excursion had on these students.

Our Sukkot celebration started off with heavy rain the first nightbut despite the weather, there were more than 100 people inattendance which shows nothing can deter our people from havinga good time. At the end of Sukkot there was an evening of learningpresented by Eva Itscovitch on Jewish Life in Hungary. Manycouples attended & shared their early life experiences making theevent to be very interesting, informative & enjoyable.

Our Chanukah party was great fun and we had an amazingmagician who entertained the whole crowd, kids & adults included.

The Raffle was a huge success thanks to Gerry Phillips, RabbiCarlebach and the many others who worked so hard to sell tickets.

Purim was fun and entertaining, thanks mostly to the BMCSeminary girls, who decorated the Shul, prepared the meal andentertained the kids with face painting.

It is always welcoming to hear good news and there was a lot ofthat this year from the Carlebach family. At first Ephraim marriedKraina Rieber and shortly after Yosef Yitzchok married BassiePewzner. Next in line is Yehudah Dovid who will marry ChayaHazan in early summer. I think we will continue to receive goodnews as the Carlebachs are a very busy and quick growing family! We wish them all a big Mazel Tov and much nachus.

On a sad note our Past President Gerry Kessner unexpectedlypassed away in Florida. Rabbi Carlebach attended the funeral aswell as many of our House of Israel snowbirds. Gerry was awonderful person and was loved by everyone. At the funeral,Gerry's children recalled fond memories of their family time spentin their country home. His wife Frances truly lost a best friend aswe all did. Gerry's warm smile will be very sadly missed by all ofus.

Many thanks go to Rabbi and Rebbetzin Carlebach for their neverending energy and synergy. Together they are the glue that keepsour Shul together.

For the summer season, we have planned our “65th AnniversaryGala Reunion”. We will be announcing details very shortly but thisevent will definitely be bigger and better than any event in thepast.

As the only year round Synagogue in the Laurentians, it excitesme to realize that I sat in the same chapel well over 60 years ago. When I look around today and see the evolution of our beautifulShul, I wish and hope that we will continue to grow as a house ofworship where our children and their children can continue topray to G-D for only good things.

Howard Diamond

Chametz

Unique to Pesach is the stringent prohibitionof eating or possessing chametz. Chametz is aterm used for all food and drinks made fromthe five grains (wheat, rye, oats, spelt andbarley) and their derivatives. Since theycontain leaven they are forbidden duringPesach. All foods and drinks that contain evena trace of chametz (including medicines, petfoods, cosmetics, etc) must be removed.Grains like rice, peas, kasha, etc. and peanuts, corn, etc. are forbidden to Ashkenazim. While shopping for Pesach we should becareful that the foods purchased must bekosher for Pesach – chametz free.

Countdown to Chametz-Free Living

One’s entire home is thoroughly cleaned, removing all crumbs and traces of chametzfood. Cars, offices, clothing pockets, strollers, etc. are checked as well.To prepare the kitchen, one must kosher itfrom all chametz. Consult a Rabbi for details.

Selling

It is forbidden to own or derive any benefit fromchametz, so all remaining chametz must betransferred to gentile ownership before Pesach.Chametz should be stored in locked closets orrooms and must be sold to a non-Jew througha competent Rabbi before Friday morning,March 30th. (See contract below.)

Searching

A formal search for any chametz takesplace Thursday evening, March 29th with alit candle, wooden spoon and feather. Before the search the following blessing issaid: Baruch Ah-tah Adonoi Elohainu

Melech Ha-olam Asher Ki-d’shanuB’mitzvotav V’tzivanu Al Bi-ur Chametz. After the search, the following declaration ismade: “Any chametz or leaven that is in mypossession which I have not seen, have notremoved and know not about, should beannulled and become ownerless like dust ofthe earth”.

Fast of the First-Born

When the Egyptian first-borns were strickenbefore the exodus, the Jewish first-born werespared. In gratitude, Jewish first-born sons fastthe day before Passover (Friday, March 30th).This fast is cancelled by participating in aSiyum – a conclusion of a Talmud Tractateand a Seudah (meal) held in a synagogue onMonday morning.

Eating and Burning Chametz Deadline

On Friday morning, March 30th, no chametzmay be eaten after 10:55 a.m. All chametzwhich is not stored and sold and which wasfound during the search should be burnt by11:58 a.m.

The Seder Nights - in briefSolid Preparation and Spirited Delivery

On the first two nights of Pesach, Friday &Saturday, March 30th & 31st, we conduct aSeder – a festive yet solemn event with familyand guests. We re-enact and relive the slaveryand exodus from Egypt, and pray for theforthcoming redemption. Leaven food isgone, making room for thoughts of freedom. The Seder begins with Kiddush, proclaimingthe holiness of the day. It is the first of thefour cups of wine that we drink during theSeder and therefore Kiddush should berecited only after nightfall (8:00 p.m). To

accentuate freedom, we lean on our left sidewhen drinking.Three matzot (preferably shmura matzah)are placed on the table under or near theseder-plate. Matzah is a basic mixture of flourand water that did not rise. It reminds us ofour quick departure from slavery to freedom, how we left Egypt in a great hurry that thedough had no time to rise. Once again we leanon our left when eating the matzah. The seder-plate consists of the followingitems: Baitza – a hard-boiled egg, symbolic ofthe festival sacrifice. Z’roah – a roastedchicken neck, symbolic of the pascalsacrifice. Marror – bitter herbs, symbolic ofthe bitter suffering. Charoset – a mixture ofapples, nuts and wine resembling the mortarused to make bricks. Karpas – a cookedpotato or raw onion, dipped into salt water sothe children would ask questions. Chazeret –romaine lettuce, symbolic of our slavery.Refer to a Haggadah – the seder manual for allprocedures and recitations. Although theHaggadah is written in Hebrew and Aramaic, the story of Pesach (Maggid) should betranslated and understood by all.

Last Days

The climax of our exodus from Egypt occursat the “splitting of the sea”. The Egyptianforces are defeated and a most powerfulmanifestation of G-d’s total control of naturetakes place. On the seventh day of Passover Friday, April6th), we read and sing the song of “AzYashir” – the song of the majestic triumph ofG-d at the sea and the defeat of the Egyptianforces.Yizkor is recited during the morning serviceon Saturday, April 7th.

YOUR PESACH COMPANION 5778 – 2018Pesach (Passover) celebrates the liberation of the Jewish People from Egyptian slavery. We celebrate our physical and

spiritual freedom from the abominations of Egypt – its idolatry and immorality.

PESACH DOES NOT END UNTIL SATURDAY NIGHT, APRIL 7th, AT 8:20 PM.

SHAVUOT INSIGHTS – 5778May 19 - 21, 2018

WHAT ISSHAVUOT?

Shavuot, one of thethree major Festivals

(the other two beingPesach and Sukkot), marks the

giving of the Torah to the entire Jewish people at Mount Sinai 3,330years ago. This holiday comes exactly fifty days after Passover.Every year on this day we renew our acceptance of G-d’s gift. Theword Shavuot also means “weeks”. It culminates the spiritualpreparation of the seven week “Omer” period which commenced onthe second night of Passover. During this time the Jewish peoplecleansed themselves of the scars of bondage and became a holynation ready to enter into a spiritual covenant with G-d.

THE GIVING OF THE TORAHThe word “giving” is related to the word “gift” since the Torah wasn’tmerely “presented” or “given”, but was a special gift which created aprofound and permanent impression upon the Jewish people andbound us to G-d. On that momentous day at Mount Sinai, only thegiving of the Torah occurred, whereas our receiving the Torah takesplace every day. In addition, the Torah was given to all Jews alike, without distinction. The giving of the Torah was far more than an historical event. It wasa far reaching spiritual event – one that touched the essence of theJewish soul then and for all time. Our Sages have compared it to awedding between G-d and the Jewish people. We became His specialnation and He became our G-d.

WHAT IS THE TORAH? The Torah is composed of two parts: the Written Law and the OralLaw. The Written Torah contains the Five Books of Moses, theProphets and the Writings. Together with the Written Torah,Moses was also given the Oral Law which explains and clarifiesthe Written law. It was to be transmitted from generation togeneration and eventually was transcribed in the Talmud,Midrash and Zohar. The Torah is not mere human knowledge subject to revision butrepresents Divine immutable universal guidelines, tried andtested by the Jewish people over several millennia in everycountry and culture throughout the world. Torah provides aframework for daily living based on the most authoritative moral

code. The Torah is a most precise and eternal yardstick againstwhich to measure our deeds and lifestyles.

HOLIDAY CUSTOMSOn the evenings preceding a Jewish holiday, women and girlsusher and welcome in the holiday by lighting candles, and sayingthe proper blessing. It is customary to stay awake on the first night of Shavuot (Saturday,May 19) and to read the “Tikkun Lail Shavuoth” anthology; selectionsfrom the Written and Oral Torah. All people, especially children, should hear the Torah reading ofthe Ten Commandments in the Synagogue on the first day ofShavuot (Sunday, May 20). On Shavuot we dedicate ourselves to increase our Torah studythroughout the year.

DAIRY FOODSIt is customary to eat dairy foods such as blintzes and cheesecakeon Shavuot. Full dairy courses can be served as the main meal oras a lighter snack preceding the traditional meat dinner. One reason for eating dairy is that when the Jews received theTorah on Shavuot, they had no kosher utensils for meatpreparation, so they ate dairy, which is relatively easier toprepare.

THE BOOK OF RUTHIt is customary to read the Book of Ruth on (the second day of)Shavuot. Ruth was a sincere convert who embraced Judaism withall her heart. Through her conversion, Ruth entered into acovenant with G-d; on Shavuot, the Jews entered into theircovenant with Hashem through their acceptance of the Torah. Shavuot is the birthday and yahrzeit of King David (as well as RebYisrael Baal Shem Tov,) and the Book of Ruth records KingDavid’s ancestry. Ruth and her husband Boaz were King David’sgreat grandparents. Ruth, who merited to become the Mother ofRoyalty, represents the spiritual striving and accomplishments ofJewish women.

YIZKOROn the second day of Shavuot, Monday, May 21 (as on Passover,Sukkot and Yom Kippur) it is customary to recite Yizkor, a prayerin memory of a departed relative or friend.

A TRIBUTE TO OUR PAST-PRESIDENT GERALD KESSNER o.b.m.

It is with profound sorrow and sadness that we write this Tribute to one of our best Past Presidents.Gerry served two terms as President of the House of Israel Congregation and under his leadershipour Shul was a place of peace and harmony. He was a very special man, calm, kindhearted, genuineand a down to earth person with good Jewish values. Gerry always had a smile on his face when he greeted you but he served as President with a firmhand and with great dignity. He was a real mensch with a good Neshamah. One cannot list Gerry’s accomplishments without mentioning his wife Frances whom he loveddearly. They were married for 54 years and were a dynamic team, always working together.  Theyhad so many friends and were involved in so many aspects of our Montreal Jewish community. Themany mitzvot that they did were honourable and their support and generous contributionsbenefitted so many organizations.

Gerry and Frances were known as a kind, warm and generous couple who opened up their hearts to all.  Our Shul, his manyfriends to which he was known as “Kessie” and the whole Jewish community will sincerely miss his humour, his friendship, leadership and that smile with a little twinkle in his eye! We wish his wife Frances strength to carry on and continue his legacy.May his memory be a blessing and an inspiration to all.

Sefirat Ha-omer – 49 days March 31 – May 18, 2018

We begin ‘Counting the Omer’ each night, in anticipation of receivingthe Torah, 49 days after leaving Egypt. It begins Saturday night, March31st, (2nd eve of Pesach) and ends Friday night, May 18th.The 49 days embody the 49 steps of self-improvement – beginningwith the departure from our “personal” Egypt, until our arrival atMount Sinai, when we are ready to accept the wisdom of the Torah. This period has assumed another aspect in the course of time. Duringthe early 2nd Century between the holidays of Pesach and Shavuot,a plague lasting 33 days broke out amongst the students of RabbiAkiva. Twenty-four thousand students died during this short period.Celebrations (such as weddings) are postponed during this time.

Yom Hashoah – Thursday, April 12, 2018Holocaust Memorial Day.

Yom Hazikaron – Wednesday, April 18, 2018Memorial Day for fallen Israeli soldiers.

Yom Ha-atzmaut – Thursday, April 19, 2018Happy Birthday Israel!

Lag B’omer – Thursday, May 3, 2018On the thirty-third day “Lag” of the Omer, the epidemic amongstRabbi Akiva’s students ceased. The mourning period is suspendedon this day and celebrations are permitted. This day also marks the Yahrtzeit – passing date of Rabbi Shimon
