Since the Sunday after Easter, we have been exploring the Great Commission, Jesus’ instructions to his disciples to “go and make disciples of all nations.” This has led us down multiple paths of proc-lamation, including Peter’s vision and Paul’s writings. We are beginning to understand that it is up to us to get out there and to share a message of Good News to the world; to plant seeds of faith so that the Holy Spirit can get to work in nurturing relationships and transforming hearts.
But as we have journeyed down this road of discipleship, we realize that everything isn’t all milk and cookies and all things good. This Christian life, while it certainly has its perks and rewards, can be difficult at times. In fact, it can be down right discouraging. It is during these moments that it is ever so important to look to our source of strength, to lean in on our Savior who truly understands the predicaments of life that we face.
It is also helpful to turn to Scripture. Beginning June 16, we will start a 4 week sermon series on the Psalms. Just as we have ups and downs in life, our faith can sway to both extremes. The Book of Psalms is a helpful resource in addressing our current state of affairs. Join us for worship in June and discover for yourself that we have a God that is present, trustworthy, and full of new life.

“WE MAKE THE ROAD BY WALKING” BOOK STUDY
Our new youth director, Stephen Adkison, will be beginning his ministry with us at House of Prayer on June 24th in time for Vacation Bible School. Be sure to stop by church on Sundays this summer and introduce yourself to Stephen!

Six high school youth and one adult from House of Prayer are currently in Germany with a group from Christ the King Lutheran Church. Those travelers from House of Prayer are: Kaley Hagemeister, Alana Larson, Adam Parrish, Avery Parrish, Julianna Rumph, Mykenzie Shaw, and Lindsay Youngdahl. Please continue to keep this group in your prayers as they travel abroad and explore the homeland of Martin Luther.

One of the perks of living so close to the Gulf is that you can go to church in the morning and the beach in the afternoon. We will be following this schedule. Join us as we spend the afternoon in Galveston! Meet in the church parking lot by 1:15 pm, and we will caravan down to Stewart Beach. Cost is $15/car.
SUNDAY FUNDAY AT THE BEACH—Sunday, June 9 at 2pm
The House of Prayer Christians in Action (CIA) group bus trips are sponsored for seniors for seniors 55 years and older invite you to join the next outing: Monday, June 3. We will be going to the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum in Galveston for a docent lead tour. Following the tour is lunch at Willie G’s Restaurant at the waterfront. Bus departs at 9 am. Cost is $8 which includes bus donation and museum tour. Lunch is on your own.

QUILTING OPPORTUNITIES THIS MONTH
Please join the Quilting Group to tie layers of quilts together. The group makes quilts to donate to Lutheran World Relief.

The House of Prayer book club meets upstairs at church in room 207 at 7:30 pm. The book for June is Crazy, Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan. The author is a graduate of Clear Lake High School. BOOK CLUB—Thursday, June 20 at 7:30pm
On these meeting days, we simply put down a sheet, add batting, put the quilt tops on and then tie the three layers together with crochet thread. More help is always needed.
We can also use material to use for making quilt tops if you have scraps that are looking for a home.
House of Prayer’s card making class is for beginners and experts alike, as we create greeting cards for our church’s caring card ministry. We meet every second Thursday of the month at 1:30 pm in room 210 (Fellowship Room.) This time, we are going to learn about water color pencils. Most of the supplies will be provided, so just bring scissors, paper cutter, and double-sided tape or glue.
CARD MAKING CLASS—Thursday, June 13 at 1:30pm
PERFECT ORDER — By the time the summer solstice occurs, it feels as if the season has been in full swing for weeks. It’s bittersweet that just when summer officially starts, the length of daylight begins decreasing. Before we’re ready to let go of the season, summer marches toward fall, and then winter with the year’s shortest day. Yet that is our Creator's plan: “You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth; you have made summer and winter” (Psalm 74:17, ESV.) God fashioned the world to be beautiful, good
and perfectly symmetrical. With concise order, he ordained seasons, rhythms, orbits and natural boundaries. As God’s beloved children, we’re blessed to enjoy the intricacies and patterns of this magnificent universe.

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY—Tuesday, June 25 at 7pm
All women are invited to the monthly Women’s Bible Study. The meetings occur every fourth Tuesday at 7:00pm upstairs in room 207. We will continue our studies from Gather magazine.
This Summer’s theme: Lessons from Esther. The book of Esther is one of the latest writings of the Old Testament, perhaps written to inspire Jews who had been scattered in the diaspora. The narrative takes place in the court of the King of Persia, King Ahasuerus. Some think that it was written to explain and establish the Jewish festival of Purim. This three session-study is brought to us by Kay Ward, a bishop of the Moravian Church who lives at Marquardt Manor, a Moravian retirement community in Watertown, Wisconsin. She continues to serve in ministry as a pastor to pastors and intercessor for the church. Before retiring from the staff of Moravian Theological Seminary in Bethle-hem, Pennsylvania, she served in team ministry with her husband, Aden. Kay was the first woman to be elected a bishop in the 541 years of the Moravian Church (the Unitas Fratrum.) SESSION ONE: For Such a Time as This: Esther the Queen—Voices in the King’s Court. Session one sets the scene for the story of Esther and her adopted father, Mortecai. Esther and Mortecai are Jews living under the rule of the Persian king, King Ahasuerus. When Esther be-comes the queen, her faith is tested. The Jews, those who have been carried off from their homeland, struggle with living as strangers in a foreign land. In this session we will think about how our culture may challenge our faith.

Synod Assembly Bible Verse: Isaiah 43:18-21 18 Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. 19 I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. 20 The wild animals will honor me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, 21 the people whom I formed for myself so that they might declare my praise. This was the 32nd Assembly of the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod! Our theme, Sacred Shift, explored the many shifts taking place in our culture, in the world, and in the church. The Synod Assembly was a gathering of our congregations’ pastors, deacons, and lay leaders for prayer, worship, learning, mutual upbuilding, elections, and business. This year, we experimented with a two-day assembly and also with meeting in a congregation. Many thanks to the staff and leaders of Kinsmen Lutheran Church for being willing to jump into this opportunity. • This year we re-elected our bishop, Michael Rinehart to his third term. Bishop Mike received the required 75%
votes on the first ballot!!! • The assembly passed a resolution, a memorial, elected synod officers, and approved the budget and
compensation guidelines. • The Mission Endowment Fund is now LiveOn • We approved the resolution to be an AMMPARO “welcoming” synod, the Synod Assembly commit the Texas-
Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod to the following commitments: ☼ This synod will make resources available that support medical, legal and pastoral needs of migrants and
refugees. This includes opportunities for congregations and individuals to support LIRS through the synod online donation portal;
☼ Migrant children and families will be regularly prayed for by Synod Council, staff and at synod gatherings, meetings, and assemblies;
☼ Synod leadership, including the Synod Council, staff, and hospitality team, will encourage all congregations to become AMMPARO “welcoming” congregations, and that all pastors, deacons and lay leaders educate themselves on issues facing migrants and refugees.
☼ The synod’s hospitality team, with assistance of synod staff, will provide resources through the synod website, newsletters, and social media presence.
☼ Synod leadership, as well as pastors, deacons and congregational leaders, will be urged to actively participate in local advocacy for migrants and refugees. The synod will make local opportunities for advocacy known through the Synod website, newsletters, and social media presence.
• Earth Charter memorial (a request sent to ELCA) was passed. ☼ The Earth Charter is an international declaration of values and principles that support building a just,
sustainable, and peaceful global society in the 21st century. It “seeks to inspire in all peoples a sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the well-being of the human family, the greater community of life, and future generations.” The Charter was created by a global consultation process, and it has been endorsed by organizations representing millions of people. It attempts to provide a new, comprehensive, and global framework for thinking about and addressing issues related to environmental protection, human rights, equitable human development, and peace, regarding these issues as interdependent and indivisible.

COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS OUTREACH - JUNE MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES
PANTS, PANTS, PANTS Last year, we did a great job of collecting school clothes for Communities in Schools. This summer, the focus will be on pants for boys and girls in kin-dergarten through 12th grade. Pants are what kiddos outgrow the fastest and can be the most difficult clothing item to fit. So, we're asking for pants of all kinds--jeans, kha-kis, long pants, and walking shorts--for girls, skorts. Pants with adjustable waistlines or elastic waists work well--even long athletic shorts will do. Please, as much as they're in style, no torn jeans. We'll be collecting for June, July, and August. Fall 2019: Poetry of the Old Testament This September, October and November, we will study selections of Old Testament poetry from Job, Psalms and Lamentations. Drawing from the experiences of these ancient writers, we will learn to look for God in times of deep emotions, such as joy, anger, celebration, depression, misunderstanding and contentment, finding hope and grace along the way.

Why do we go to synod assembly? To elect synodical officers, conduct the synod’s business, learn what is going on in the church today, but also to hear the wonderful sermons, enjoy the wonderful singing and meet old and new friends. We also heard about the wonderful things happening at Lutherhill and Zion Retreat Center.
