CHAPTERS SUMMARIES Chapter #1 The house on Mango Street A girl is telling her story about how her family had to move from home each year, they were six in the family and they faced difficulties. It was a small house with just one washroom and one bedroom, so everyone had to share. Even it was supposed to be temporary, the way people refers to her house make her feel it is nothing.
Chapter #2 Hairs Everybody in her family had different type of hair, for example her dad has it all up in the air, Carlos´ hair is thick and straight, Nenny´s hair is slippery, Kiki´s hair is like fur and her hair never obeys. Her mother´s hair is pretty and curly and when she holds you, you feel safe. Chapter #3 Boys & Girls Esperanza has 2 brothers and one sister. The boys (Carlos and Kiki) live in her own world and are best friends, and Nenny is too young so she doesn´t have a very good relation. Esperanza wants to have a best friend so she can tell her secrets and jokes to someone.
Chapter #4 My Name Esperanza is called as her great-‐grandmother; they both were born in the Chinese year of the horse but she did not get to know her. In English her name means hope and at school they say that her name funny separating the syllables. Esperanza wants to baptize herself in a new name.
Chapter #5 Cathy Queen of Cats Two girls live across the street, Alicia used to like Esperanza, but now she doesn’t. Cathy is the queen of cats; she has big cats, baby cats, fat cats, and cats everywhere. Her house is like cat heaven. Cathy´s family is moving from Mango Street, and one day her father will have to fly to France.
Chapter #6 Our Good Day Cathy was Esperanza´s friend but just until Tuesday because she was leaving. She got new friends and a bike for five dollars. Esperanza rode the bike with her new friends and had fun.
Chapter #7 Laughter Esperanza and her sister Nenny doesn´t look alike as Rachel and Lucy. But their laughter for example is one of the things they have alike. Also they think the same, they passed by a house that they both thought it looked like Mexico.
Chapter #8 Gil´s Furniture Bought & Sold An old clack man owns a junk store, one of those stores in which everything is on top of everything. The man only turns the lights on if you have money to buy so you can get lost easy in the dark. Nenny found a music box and wanted to buy it but it wasn´t for sale.
Chapter #9 Meme Ortiz Meme is called Juan Ortiz, but when someone asks him what’s his name, he says Meme. Meme moved into Cathy´s house that her father built after her family moved away. Chapter #10 Louie, his cousin & his other cousin Louie is Esperanza´s brother friend; he is the oldest of a family of little sisters. He has two cousins; Marin lives with Louie´s family because her family lives in Puerto Rico. The other cousin once got there in a yellow Cadillac and everyone was amazed by it.
Chapter #11 Marin Marin´s boyfriend lives in Puerto Rico, and they want to get married next year. She wants to get a job to save money and baby-‐sitting her cousins. Every night she lights a cigarette outside with the radio. Chapter #12 Those Who Don´t Those who don´t know the neighborhood believe that is dangerous. But the ones living there aren’t afraid. They know that the guy with the crooked eye is Davey the Baby´s brother. Chapter #13 There was an old woman she had so many children she didn’t know what to do Rosa Vargas is a woman with too many kids. She cries everyday for the man who left her without a dollar o even a letter explaining why he was leaving. The kids are always on trouble climbing trees or bouncing between cars.
Chapter #14 Alicia who sees Mice Alicia´s mother died, but she is young and smart. She studies at the university and doesn´t want to spend her life in a factory. Alicia sees mice and she is afraid of them, her father tells her they don´t exist.
Chapter #15 Darious & the Clouds Darious doesn´t like school and sometimes he is a stupid and fool and chases girls. Most of the days he says nothing, but he said something interesting today. He pointed the sky full of clouds and said that the big cloud over there was God.
Chapter #16 And Some More
Esperanza, Nenny and Lucy were talking about the different names Eskimos have for snow and they ended in a fight. Rachel and Lucy were talking about the clouds in their real lives. One girl tells Esperanza she has a fat and ugly face and insulted herself.
Chapter #17 The family of little feet There was a family, they were all little and Esperanza imagines them with little plumb feet. One they the girls put on the shoes and they were happy because they fitted perfectly. They went outside and a guy asked a kiss for one dollar, they were scared and went back to Mango Street and threw away the shoes.
Chapter #18 A Rice Sandwich Some kids ate lunch at school and Esperanza envies them, she asks her mom to give her permission to eat in the canteen. The sister superior did not accept the note because Esperanza lives too close to school and she had to go home. She was embarrassed and did not enjoy the experience.
Chapter #19 Chanclas Esperanza´s mom bought her a beautiful outfit for her cousin´s baptism but she forgot the shoes. Esperanza was embarrassed and didn´t wanted to dance because she had her old sandals. Her uncle insists her she looks beautiful and they both dance.
Chapter #20 Hips Esperanza, Nenny, Lucy, and Rachel were jumping the rope and discussed for what were the hips. Each one had a different idea
Chapter #21 The first Job Esperanza was looking for a job summer job because she wasn´t doing anything. Her aunt had a job for her in a photofinishing store, she was alone there. One day another guy was working with her in the store and ask her to kiss him because it was his birthday, but he kissed her in the lips for a long time instead of the cheek.
Chapter #22 Papa Who Wakes Up Tired in the Dark Esperanza´s father tell her that her grandfather died, she had never seen her dad cried before. Her dad had to go to Mexico with the rest of the family. Esperanza will have o explain to her sister that they couldn´t play or go out that day.
Chapter #23 Born Bad Esperanza´s mom says she was born on an evil day. Esperanza and her friends Lucy and Rachel did fun of her aunt Guadalupe before she died, she was like Esperanza´s mom. Lupe was a strong and beautiful woman.
Chapter #24 Elenita, Cards, Palm, Water Esperanza went to Elenita´s house, she is a witch. She took out the tarot cards and sees jealousy, luxury and sorrow; Elenita wants to make Esperanza see something in the water but she can´t concentrate and believe in spirits. Elenita does not see a house so esperanza went back home disappointed.
Chapter #25 Geraldo No Last Name Geraldo was a young man Marin meets in a dance, he was pretty and young. Geraldo had an accident and Marin stays in the hospital with him, but he dies in the emergency room. He had nothing in the pockets and no one knew his last name.
Chapter #26 Edna´s Ruthie Edna owns the apartment building next door to Esperanza´s house; she has a daughter called Ruthie. Ruthie is a grown-‐up that loves to play and laugh. Esperanza loves to show her the book she takes out from library and one day she memorized one book so Ruthie can listen to her.
Chapter #27 The Earl of Tennessee Earl lives next door in Edna´s basement; his blinds are closed during the day. He has two little black dogs that go everywhere with him. Earl is a jukebox repairman; he says he learned his trade in the south.
Chapter #28 Sire Sire is Esperanza´s neighbor that stares at him when she walks by his house. Her mom says he is a punk and her dad says not to talk to him. Earl had a petite girlfriend, Loie, who didn´t know how to tie her shoes.
Chapter #29 Four Skinny Trees Esperanza identifies and compares herself with the trees; they do not belong to there, but are there. They have a secret strength; they make not forget the reason for being. Esperanza looks at the trees when she is sad, when there is nothing else to see.
Chapter #30 No Speak English Mamacita is the wife of one of Esperanza’s neighbors. Her husband works very hard to bring her and her child to Mango Street, but once Mamacita arrives, she never leaves the house. She misses Mexico and refuses to assimilate.
Chapter #31 Rafaela Who Drinks Coconut & Papaya Juice on Tuesdays When Rafaela´s husband has on Tuesdays his Poker tournaments, he locks her because he is afraid she´ll escape. She leans on the window and throws a dollar so Esperanza can go buy her a coconut papaya juice Chapter #32 Sally The boys at school think Sally is beautiful; she has eyes like Egyptian and nylons smoked color. Sally’s father thinks her beauty is dangerous and doesn’t let her out of the house, but Esperanza thinks Sally is wonderful and would like to be her new best friend. She wants to learn to line her eyes as Sally does.
Chapter #33 Minerva Writes Poems Minerva is married and with two children and she is only two years older than Esperanza. Her husband left, and when he comes back is only to leave again. Minerva shares with Esperanza the poems she writes.
Chapter #34 Bums in the Attic On weekends Esperanza´s family go to visit the houses and dream of living there. Esperanza wishes to have a house with a garden and live there happy. But Esperanza has stopped looking at what she can´t have so she doesn´t go with her family anymore.
Chapter #35 Beautiful and Cruel Esperanza´s sister Nenny is more attractive than her and she wants a husband to take her away. Esperanza feels ugly and is afraid not to find someone and stuck at her house. Esperanza by saying she will be more beautiful as she gets older, but Esperanza has decided not to wait around for a husband to take her away.
Chapter #36 A Smart Cookie Esperanza´s mom has many skills; she speaks two languages, sing and draw. One day while she was cooking the meal she sang and complained she could have done something about her life. She gives and advice to Esperanza, that she need to be able to take care of herself and not to depend on a man.
Chapter #37 What Sally Said Sally’s father is afraid she’ll run off with a man and bring shame to the family like his sisters did. Her father bets her before getting to school. One day Sally took her things and asked to stay at Esperanza´s house but then her father came and apologized.
Chapter #38 The Monkey Garden There was a family near Esperanza´s house that had a monkey as a pet, once they moved away the kids of the neighborhood took the garden to explore the lost things it has. Tito, a neighborhood boy, steals Sally’s keys, and he and his friends tell her that she has to kiss all of them to get them back. Sally agrees, and they go behind an old car.
Chapter #39 Red Clowns Esperanza goes to a carnival with Sally and Sally disappears with an older boy. While Esperanza waits for her to return, a group of non-‐Latino boys attacked Esperanza. She was sexually assaulted.
Chapter #40 Linoleum Roses Sally gets married with a salesman much older than her in another country that is legal to marry girls under 14. She claims to be happy but her husband sometimes gets aggressive even he gives Sally money. Esperanza believes Sally got married to escape from her house.
Chapter #41 The Three Sisters Esperanza was at Rachel and Lucy´s house because their little sister died so everyone went to see her before she was buried. There were three sisters that compliment Esperanza with her name and told her to make a wish that will come true. One of the sisters took Esperanza to one side and told her that even if she was able to leave, she should come back for the others.
Chapter #42 Alicia & I Talking on Edna’s Steps Esperanza is jealous of Alicia because she can still call Guadalajara home and she will return there someday. Esperanza doesn´t want to have lived in the house for a year, or to come from Mango Street. She declares that she will never return to Mango Street until someone makes it a better place.
Chapter #43 A House Of My Own Esperanza describes how she would like her house to be and look like. She doesn´t want it to belong to a man, have flowers in front and a porch, a picture square and her shoes beside her bed. But specially safe and clean. Chapter #44 Mango Says Goodbye Sometimes Esperanza describes herself as a storyteller, about a girl that did just didn´t want to belong. The house on Mango Street is the one she remembers the most even she has lived in many houses. She believes one day she will get out from Mango Street and will return for the ones who can´t go out by themselves.
