SCHOLASTIC
BOOK FAIR
The Scholastic Book Fair, which was held in October, was a huge success! Thanks to all the hard work of our many library helpers and the enthusiasm of our students, we were able to raise funds in order to purchase new books for the li-brary and support the English pro-gram. Thanks to all parents, stu-dents and teachers for your sup-port. See you back again at the Spring Scholastic Book Fair in April!
HOUSE SPIRIT DAYS
ARE BACK
As in previous years, our school population is divided into groups called “Houses”. Each House is assigned a colour (Blue, Red or Yellow) and is comprised of prime time classes from grades 6, 7, and 8. Colour Houses participate in a variety of spirit events throughout the year, earning points for their Colour House for participation. Our first Colour House Spirit Day was held on October 31, Black and Orange Day. This year, students were canvassed for Spirit Day ideas, and we received many great suggestions. Stay tuned!

TERRY FOX EVENT
The Terry Fox Event on September 26, 2013 was a success again this year. All of the students participated and many contributed to the Terry Fox Foundation for Cancer Re-search. AUTOMATED
ATTENDANCE
This month we will resume using our automated attendance system for reporting student absences and late arrivals to parents. If you receive a telephone call from this system stat-ing your child is absent from school, please call the school to confirm his or her absence. You may also re-ceive a notification call to advise you that your child arrived late to school. You do not need to call the school in this case, as this is for your informa-tion. With your help, our aim is to greatly reduce late arrivals. As al-ways, please continue to call the school to advise us if your child will be absent from school or arriv-ing late. For your convenience, you may leave a message on our atten-dance line outside of school hours.
BOYS
FLAG FOOTBALL
On October 23rd
, Fairwind hosted the Boys Flag Football Tournament. Our boy’s team had worked hard for many weeks during our practices in preparation for the tournament competition. Despite our 5
th place
finish, the boys played with their best efforts and were in every game to the final seconds. They won their first game convincingly, lost the 2
nd
game and in the playoffs, they were within a few yards of tying the game before the clock ran out. The team coaches, Mr. Klos and Ms. War-nock awarded Venusan V. as the team’s tournament MVP. Strong efforts by our quarterback Wayne S. and defensive back Harris V. were acknowledged as well. A big thank you to all those students who helped set up our fields and who took on vital jobs to assist us in run-ning a successful tournament. We look forward to next year’s season.
GIRLS
FLAG FOOTBALL
On October 24th, the Fairwind Girls’
Flag Football team attended its tour-nament at the Valleys Community Centre. It was a cold and windy day, but that didn’t stop our peppy and dedicated girls from trying their hard-est. The girls lost their first game to the Valleys who ended up finishing in second. Leah W. had some long runs, Mudra P. made some key catches, and Sakshi K. played a strong defense. We won our second game in a nail biter against Falling-brook. Danielle K. was key to Fair-wind with multiple crucial intercep-tions and the game winning touch-down with 20 seconds to go. Our last game was a close call against a tough Hazel McCallion, with Amal K. scoring an exciting touchdown and Areej K. with some spectacular catches. Reeya K. had quick hands and was a huge asset on de-fense. Loveleen G., Leslie H., and Aman G. had some tough calls as the quarterbacks but played amazingly well under pressure. All in all, we had a fantastic day. Our girls were extremely sportsmanlike and repre-sented Fairwind in the best way pos-sible. Big thanks go to Miss Warnock for all the time and effort she put into coaching the team.
CREATING PATHWAYS
TO SUCCESS
Career Exploration is a new subject for Grade 7 and 8 students this year. Starting in Grade 7, students will track the growth of their career devel-opment and plan for their future in an Individual Pathway Plan (IPP), using MyBlueprint.ca/peel, a web-based career and life planning tool. My-Blueprint allows students to develop their IPP by building customized high school course plans and post-secondary plans, and to ensure they develop the knowledge and skills they need to make informed educa-tion and career/life choices. MyBlue-print.ca/peel is licensed to all Peel school students in parents.
Need help in math?

Math students in grades 7 to 10 can access live, interactive online math h e l p b y v i s i t i n g www.homeworkhelp.ilc.org. Home-work Help is free, real-time math tu-toring by certified Ontario teachers.
Students can log in from Sunday to Thursday, between 5:30 and 9:30 p.m. for individualized confidential math tutoring. Register for Extended
French by Jan. 31,
2014
Are you thinking of registering your child for Extended French (EF)? For the 2014-15 school year, parents must register children for entry into grade 7 Extended French by 4 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2014.
The registration date will help deter-mine the number of grade 7 Ex-tended French classes at each school for the following September. The board can then hire the appropri-ate number of qualified staff. As well, because the registration date hap-pens earlier, the intention is that no new EF classes will be created at reorganization time in September, so the level of student disruption will be reduced.
Registration
Registration for EF will be done through an online registration form that will be available on Nov. 22 at www.pee lschoo ls .org /pa ren ts /programs/French/registration.
What is the EF program like? What are the advantages and disadvan-tages of the program? How can you tell if it is the right choice for your child?
One way to help answer these ques-tions is to attend the information meeting at the EF school your child would attend. Meet the principal and some of the teachers from the school. Hear about the program and have an opportunity to ask questions. Talk with some parents whose chil-dren are now in the program. A par-ent information night will be held at each EF school in Peel on Nov. 21 at 7 p.m.

Choose Action on
Bullying Awareness and
Prevention Week
The Peel District School Board will recognize Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week during the week of November 18 to 22.
Across the Peel board, schools use many programs and initiatives to pre-vent bullying and to intervene when bullying happens. Though the pro-grams vary, their messages are con-sistent. Students are taught to:
define bullying
identify forms of bullying
identify roles in bullying relation-ships, for example the person who bullies, the target, the by-stander or the trusted advocate
determine how to safely “choose action” to prevent and intervene in bullying & harassment
demonstrate character attributes and be a leader to help maintain positive and safe school commu-nities
Every school has a Climate for Learning and Working Team which is required to develop a Bullying Pre-vention and Intervention Plan as part of the School Success Plan. Also, every employee who is involved in the care and service of students is obligated to report in writing to the school administration any action for which the principal must consider suspension or expulsion. Bullying is an offence that must be considered for suspension.
Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week is one of the key items con-tained in Bill 13: The Accepting Schools Act, that came into effect on September 1, 2012. For more infor-mation, visit: www.peelschools.org/aboutus/safeschools/bullying/ or www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/safeschools/prevention.html
