HCS believes in a bottom-up approach to community services and believes that by educating our clients they will be better equipped to gain control over their own lives and environments. Our services are designed to resolve an immediate crisis and to help our clients to develop the skills necessary for long-term solutions, preventing the recurrence of problems. HCS places additional priorities in removing barriers for groups without adequate access to services such as limited English proficient (LEP), disabled, immigrant, homeless and elderly populations.   Multifamily Housing Trainer:  Salary Range $38-$45

Housing Counseling Services, Inc. seeks an energetic self-starter to provide training, counseling, and technical assistance to low and moderate income homeowners and tenants in DC.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Assistance: Facilitate meetings with condo/coop/tenant associations, providing technical assistance on housing related issues.

Education: Develop and present training materials and curriculum for condo/coop association members.

Identify physical, financial and regulatory needs of property and make recommendations to association.

Engage partners including: property owners, management companies, developers, attorneys, lenders, inspectors and government officials.

QUALIFICATIONS

Logistics: Daily access to a car or ability to navigate through other reliable means; Position requires evening and weekend hours, generally: Mon-Thurs 12-8pm; Friday

9am-5pm with some additional night and weekend hours required as necessary to meet the needs of clients.

Relevant experience: background in or experience with community development, affordable housing, asset management, and/or anti-poverty work.

Experience in providing direct services to low-income individuals and families. Sensitivity to needs within the community and to individual clients. Personal attributes: must be dynamic, flexible, self-directed, a strong multi-tasker,

collaborative/team-focused, and have excellent analytical and public speaking skills. Communication skills: Ability to translate technical information into layman's terms,

ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people including: lenders, contractors, developers, landlords, attorneys, public officials, and low-income families from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Comfortable working in conflict situations and being out of the office in neighborhoods throughout the region.

Must demonstrate an ability to work with a minimum of supervision. Must be versatile in order to handle a wide variety of duties. Sensitivity to the needs within the community and to individual clients. Knowledge of D.C. housing law or capacity to learn. Computer skills. Commitment to affordable housing, social justice and community education. Fluency in other languages a plus!
