Event focus: Housing Finance Conference and Exhibition 2014We were delighted to see over 1,100 finance professionals take over the University of Warwick at this year’s Housing Finance Conference and Exhibition. The sun was shining, the marquee was full of eager exhibitors, and delegates arrived keen to get on top of the latest updates in the sector.

“It’s the best event for finance professionals in this sector!” Cestria Community Housing

The conference kicked off with acclaimed futurologist, Magnus Lindkvist, who really set the tone for the event. He challenged and inspired delegates to get them thinking about horizontal change, vertical change and the need to be “revolting”.

Video: What does Paul Hackett at the Smith Institute think the effects are on housing associations as the UK economy starts to grow?

We put on over 38 breakout sessions examining the key topics that affect your day to day role, including pensions, global accounts, funding, value for money and financial statements. Sessions covering leadership, management and IT were particularly popular, so we’ll be bringing you even more varied breakouts at next year’s conference.

“Essential for finance teams in the sector.” Fortis Living

Hot topics were the focus of our sub-plenary sessions covering welfare reform, housing SORP, the changing regulatory framework and achieving the Federation’s vision of housing associations building 120,000 homes by 2033.

Video: How does Stuart Ropke at the National Housing Federation think housing associations will change over the next 20 years?

Landing on Budget day meant KPMG were on hand to provide a run-down of relevant announcements.

“I found the whole experience invigorating and thought

provoking.” Paradigm HousingDay two of the conference saw challenging and thought provoking sessions with the Cebr, Paul Kirby, former head of the No.10 policy unit, and our chief executive David Orr. Delegates were given an economic update and asked to consider the risks and opportunities facing the sector in the future and what they should be preparing for. Paul Kirby challenged housing associations to be innovative in solving the housing crisis by giving stock away to the poorest tenants or selling off stock to invigorate and subsidise a new building programme.

We know you love the opportunity to meet each other and exchange ideas and that was no exception this year. The popular conference dinner heard quirky political tales from comedian Steve Punt, Writer and Comedian on BBC Radio 4’s The Now Show and Mock the Week.

At the infamous drinks reception, the exhibitors did themselves proud with fantastic stands and the exhibiton was full to the brim with games, drinks, music and entertainment, including the party mariachi band.

“Thought the drinks reception was excellent, lots of activity and a good buzz.” Aster

We listened to your feedback and hope you enjoyed the new changes and features we introduced. As promised, we made more space for lunch, session rooms were brought closer together and dinner was moved and improved. The event app was also a popular addition that made presentations instantly downloadable.

“I like this conference. It is the right length with the right content, good speakers, relevant topics and an excellent balance of sessions and networking.” DWF
