IN THIS ISSUE: JULY 8 - 22

The 4th of July has passed and we’veall had our chance to relax with fam-ily, eat a piece of watermelon and

play with our fireworks. Hopefully, we’veremembered the sacrificesmade for the freedom forwhich we celebrate and wehave thanked at least one ofour “heroes”. Our duty done,we can go about our dailybusiness in ignorant bliss.

However, those little-thanked heroes that we rec-ognized on Monday, mustcarry on making compromis-es and sacrifices that most ofus would never consider, letalone make. Last week, I met a young manwho understands the ongoing requirementsof our unsung heroes and wants to makesure that, around the nation, these men andwomen get the recognition they deserve.

Heroes Music Festival, brainchild ofCharles DeJournett, combines rock andremembrance to remind the nation of ourheroes of 9/11 and our military. OnSeptember 8, the Atlanta Motor Speedway

will resound with music from nationalheadliners of all genres and it won’t besilent until September 12. This annual eventwill pay homage to America’s fallen heroes.

But before thebig weekend inSeptember, a Battle ofthe Bands will be heldat the MaconAuditorium on July 23;the winning band willplay alongside theheadliners at theSpeedway. That’s right, your band could playnext to the big boys!Although the deadline

for registration has passed, event coordina-tors will extend the deadline for a few moredays. So hurry up and register already!

As for me, I will happily take a seat inthe audience and enjoy an evening offriends and music, and pretend to be a judgeon American Idol! To register for the Battleof the Bands or get more information, visitwww.heroesmf.com

The things making our world just a little bit better | by brad evansWe LikeI saw the third version of Transformers this week. I just like big summer movies. I left about two hoursand twenty minutes into it because I didn’t everthink it would end. They could have made it anhour and a half and it would have been fun. Nextup is Super 8, hopefully it will fare better. My heartgoes out to anyone struggling with addiction, asI’ve had a bout with it myself, only rehab was neverin the budget for my family. Still, I get a kick out ofwatching Celebrity Rehab. This season, with GNRdrummer Steven Adler back, among others likefelon/porn star Amy Fisher, baseball junkie DwightGooden, and Lindsey Lohan’s papa is going tocreate some soul sapping drama.

Did anyone else listen to the mind-scramblingconcert by doom-metal gods The Body with the

24 piece all female Assembly of Light Choir thispast week? It sounded like Satan’s birth sound-track, but it was interesting. If you dig this kind ofthing you can find the whole concert online at NPR,but listen with care. Also from NPR this week israprebirth.com, where any rapper can hire rapghost-writer Jesse Kramer to write a custom rapsong. After asking you questions about yourselfand your hopes for style he will construct you asong for $699. I don’t know much about this, but Ihave a feeling he’s gonna be rich. Also this month, music wise, Macon GA has Jamey Johnson, andLucinda Williams playing back to back weeks anda line-up for Bragg Jam that includes DJ MixMaster Mike. Speaking of DJ Mix Master Mike, Igot two new pairs of fly Puma’s this week. One

orange, baby blue, and green pair of Rs100’s and the other apar of brown, black, and blue EasyRiders. Both forunder 50 bucks onEbay.

I’ve been listen-ing to Townes VanZandt“Live in Berlin,” TheKinks UltimateCollection, Bob Dylan “Knocked Out Loaded,”and The Tallest Man On Earth “The Wild Hunt”this week (pic). All of it summertime goodness.

Idon’t say they’re better than any-body else but I’ll be danged if theyain’t just as good! This state-

ment is derived from the play byRogers and Hammerstein,“Oklahoma!”, an American tale ofthe frontier and the love that Curlyhas for Laurey. It is the play that thePerry Players Youth Workshop livesand breathes these days.

Workshop Director JoyGoodman, has been performing since agefive, first appeared in a production of “ThreePrincesses”. The acting bug bit her hard andnow nearing her twentieth year with the PerryPlayers Theatre, actress Gale Bryant describesher as “a wonderful inspiration”.

Joy is the Perry Players Youth Workshopdirector. From set design to direction, sheoversees every aspect. For two weeks, an allyouth cast and crew “train in stage movement, audition technique, acting, characterization, makeup, dance, and singing which all culmi-nate in three performances.” She feels her jobisn’t just to encourage these kids while onstage but to encourage them in life.

“Public speaking is probably the numberone fear. Being on stage helps these kids todevelop the skills to deal with situations thatwill require speaking to groups of anysize. They get to step into the spotlight for a lit-tle while!,” she said. Indeed, a public speakingcourse is required in the college core curricu-lum in the state of Georgia.

Joy cultivates a climate of mutual respectand participation. She tries to give every kid aline and those who have been with the compa-ny and have shown dedication to their craft getto participate in so much more.

Ben Stroman serves as assistant director

and has participated in thePerry Players Theatre

for eight years now.He demonstrates

the confidenceand enthusiasmof someone whois at home onstage. He issues

his directionswith cheerful

authority. He wasparticularly instrumen-

tal in the fight scene thathappens during the “The Farmer

and The Cowman Should Be Friends”sequence in “Oklahoma!”

Sarah Freeman, who recently accepted ascholarship at Emory, serves as choreographerand has danced locally with the Academy ofDance in Warner Robins since she was a veryyoung girl.

The Perry Players Theatre is located inPerry’s historic downtown area, and has thesame quaint charm as the tree-lined lanes. There is such a sense of fun in the cozy audito-rium…an intimacy between the audience andthe players. The theatre’s lobby is an unfussyaffair. The checkered floors and simple boxoffice feel unostentatious, as does the wholeethic that seems to permeate the YouthWorkshop. This is a place that you can’t helpthink would be good for a kid.

Show dates are July 22-24 and July 28-30.All shows begin at 7:30pm, matinees at 2:30.Tickets are $10. For more information, con-tact Perry Players theatre at (478) 987-5354or visit their website at www.perryplayers.org.

Perry Player Community Theatre is anon-profit organization . Auditions for theirnext production, “Arsenic and Old Lace” areAugust 7 at 2:30 and August 8 at 7p.m.

Throughout ournation's history, manyauthors have had an

impact on both the politi-cal and social aspects ofour society. The“Federalist Papers” standout to us as one of themost important series ofprinted materials. This lit-erature made the way forthe adoption of the USConstitution.

They were written from1777 to 1778 by three dif-ferent authors, but pub-lished under the bylinePublius. The reasoningbehind Publius was to rep-resent the ideas behind thewriting as one of a groupand not individuals.Although, the identifica-

tion of the authors ofmost the papers are nowundisputed, scholars stilldebate over the rest.

In a similar vein, this isthe first article from theCoalition of ConcernedCitizens Houston County. So, who is the Coalitionof Concerned CitizensHouston County? We are avery diverse group of com-munity leaders broughttogether by a commoninterest in making this abetter community to live in.

We hold true to ourcore values -- such as,the necessity for trans-parency in our government, the importance of environ-mental conscientiousness, the importance of good

ethics (especially in leader-ship roles), and the princi-ple everyone can make adifference in our commu-nity and society.

Future articles willcover various topics ofimportance to HoustonCounty and its residents. As we begin to embark onour published journey, wewonder, will someonesomeday speculate overthe individual authors ofour column?

SCENE your neighbors’ opinions on local and national affairs | COMMUNITY

Recently, I went to my regular hairsalon. I was secured in my pro-tective cape, complimentary cof-

fee was flowing, and plans for my hairdesign were in negotiation. The scenewas set and my stylist was assuredlyheld hostage by my verbal diarrhea asshe worked her magic. Next, the freecoffee beside her booth ensnared mydaughter’s stylist in our conversation. After the regular social greetings wereover, I decided to tap both stylists fortheir observations and opinions of theirmilitary patrons’ lifestyles.

I received some routine, safeanswers. But after some prodding, itunexpectedly launched into a diatribe onhow the United States government backedthe September 11th attacks. My stylistwas rescued by her next waiting client, but my daughter’s stylist continued topassionately lay out his case for the titil-lating idea that the Feds planned thosedevastating attacks.

Without a doubt, his case’s centralfoundation was the skein of evidencethat he had located on the internet. Someof his cited examples are: hidden footageof the US missile that hit the Pentagonbefore the plane did, non-descript facestestifying to seeing that missile fired byUS fighter jets, and even more arcanevisuals covering the mysterious explo-sion patterns and ultimate fall of theWorld Trade Center (WTC). He alsoimplied that the planes that left Bostondidn’t really come from there and thatthe passenger manifests were fabricated.

Now, I don’t think the US govern-ment being involved in unsavory plots isexactly a newsflash; but, I also don’tthink that the internet is the best sourceof infallible information either. The styl-ist admits to not being completely sold

on this conspiracy theory, but he refusedto deny all the clandestine digital images.

Being caught off-guard made mefeel as if I was grasping at straws tocounter his accusations. I offered thatOsama Bin Laden was recordedexpressing his joy over his successesand that the WTC falling was an addedbonus. The stylist asked me if I happento know Arabic and if I truly knew thatwas what Bin Laden was saying. I toldhim I didn’t speak Arabic, but I hadfriends who did. Too, as if not oneArab-American wouldn’t step forwardand bust the phony translation splashedall over the networks.

I suggested that the same cleverediting tricks used to produce footage ofwhat we are supposed to believecould’ve also been used to create thoseinternet documentaries overflowingwith covert images. (Aren’t politicalcampaign commercials famous for thattechnique?) Furthermore, I was living inBoston on September 11, 2001, and thatcity was mourning the deaths of realpeople. To wind down the debate Iinterjected, “How do you know that Iam not a hologram projection beamedin by the government to question yourloyalty?!” That silly remark made usboth pause and stare up into space.

Perhaps being in the government’sfold makes me a little muddy-eyed onbelieving in such atrocious theories. I’veseen service members (combatants andnon-combatants alike) go to Afghanistan,Kyrgyzstan, and Pakistan, return back totheir normal duty stations, and changedfrom the experience. It’s hard to knowwhether or not my kind is a troop ofpuppets being manipulated through thisunpleasant experience. Nevertheless, thestylist emphatically stated that he “sup-ports the troops,” but not the formeradministration. I find that it’s hard totruly separate the two.

After a little prodding, my hair stylist unexpectedly launched into a diatribe on how the US government backed theSeptember 11th attacks... What?

OH SAY, DID YOU KNOW?Yes, we all learned in the third grade thatour national anthem, The Star SpangledBanner, was written by Francis Scott Keyduring the British naval bombardment ofFort McHenry in the War of 1812.

But as I stood earlier today withsparkler in one hand and spatula in theother, I began to wonder about the musicof the song and, at first opportunity, I satdown with trusty laptop, did some researchand found some interesting insightsregarding our musical motto.

Francis Scott Key may be creditedwith the lyrics of our anthem; however, forthe musical composition, we must lookacross the Atlantic and find the Britishcomposer, church organist and early musi-

cologist, John Stafford Smith. The originalcomposition of this song was not intendedto be the American anthem but was meantfor a less noble purpose.

Originally named The AnacreonticSong, it was written in the mid 1700s forthe Anacreontic Society, a gentlemen’sclub in London for amateur musicians andpoets who would gather under the name ofGreek poet and entertainer, Anacreon. With its difficult range (one and a halfoctaves to be exact), they would use thesong as a sobriety test. If you could sing itwithout going off-key, you were soberenough for another round.

Soon it would become a populardrinking song for the whole of London,Britain and, later on, in early America. TheStar-Spangled Banner, originally namedThe Defense of Fort McHenry, was adopt-ed as out national anthem on March 3rd,1931 by President Herbert Hoover.

CURTIS N’ HOBBSWhen asked what my motivation is forwriting about the music scene, here inWartown, I tell people it’s mostly just beenan awesome way for me to meet great play-ers and cool cats like Jason Taylor Hobbsand Darin Curtis from Homeless Hill.

They have been running an open micnight or as I like to call it “Jam Night” atKipper’s Sports Grill starting at 9:30pm.For those of you interested, we are holdingour first ever local musicians’ pow-wowon July 11th. So if you are a musician, proor amateur, come hang out with us andhelp us make Warner Robins the bestmusic scene in Middle Georgia. Oh and bythe way, Kipper’s is offering a ten dollarbar tab to anyone who gets up and plays onthe stage so if that doesn’t get you off yourcouch on a Monday night, I don’t knowwhat will.

STEVE & MIKEYou know you’ve heard them, you knowyou love them. It is truly an honor to get totalk about these two amazing local playersand the 25 year history they share as enter-tainers.

I caught their show last week and was,in a word, entertained. At the end of theday, all they want to do is have fun withpeople, goof around, play great music and

entertain their audience. I sat down withSteve Holcomb for awhile and talked tohim about their gig.

What I get from Steve is that they arepassionate about music, about their com-munity and about giving people an experi-ence that will put a smile on their face theday after. “The best compliment we everget is when someone tells us how muchfun they had. When people tell us we areawesome is cool, but we like knowing thatpeople are having a good time when theycome see us.,” Steve said.

So what makes Steve & Mike so pop-ular and fun? I pulled this quote from theirfacebook page which states, “Our soundcan be best described as 'PoweredAcoustic' and we strive to be a little differ-ent in our approach to music, especiallythe acoustic genre. You will quickly realizethat our sound is much bigger than youexpected, with our own basslines, percus-sions and various other instruments tonumerous too count.”

I inquired about any plans for anyoriginal music in the works and Stevementioned that Mike and he have copy-rights to roughly 150 songs but no sincereplans to put anything together in the near

future; however, time providing will beginworking on a blues oriented demo. In anutshell, Steve & Mike are the epitome ofentertainment and you really ought tocheck them out sooner than later. What Idig about their groove is that they areabout local music and have been instru-mental in making our town a great placefor live music. You can catch their act atThe Cavern on July 22nd or at Kipper’son July 24th.

BANDS I’D LIKE TO SEENo kidding, the more I get into this wholemusic scene writing thing, the more musi-cians and bands I’m hearing about andtalking to that I really want to check out.Guys like Tony Teston with Corruptionand Lance Rodriguez with SouthernPsykology, Jubee and the Morning After,From Within, Homeless Hill and the listgoes on and on.

To you guys and the rest, bear withme. I ain’t going nowhere and will makeevery possible effort to catch up with yousooner than later. In the meantime, as youwell know, talk to me at [email protected] Have a great weekendeveryone….I’m out.
