[...- CROSS CANADA HOVERCRAFT TRIP ON HOLDI~

I

CROSS CANADA HOVERCRAFT EXPEDITION IS ON HOLD FOR A YEAR

Due to some unfortunate timing of spare part that were not shipped, the ambitious project ofColin Steadman's is on hold. Colin plans a cross Canada trip in a hovercraft to raise moneyfor Prostrate Cancer. The following note was passed on to the Club from Colin.

"Well loading up the tanks for a cross country adventure have turned into loading up thetanks for an adventure here in Alberta. Pacific (Supreme) Hovercraft have dropped the balland not shipped the necessary spare parts and my only window of opportunity this year isJune.

As a result, I have been forced to put my cross country trip off, probably until this time nextyear. The up side is that I will be spending the month of June touring the Province and com-piling a photos and thoughts for a book which I hope to have on the shelves for Christmas(with proceeds going to the fight against Prostate Cancer).

I have a couple of local hovering types who will be joining me for a few days and I will be in-cluding them in the book as well. Maybe you can help me to make this a bit of promotion forhovering in Alberta & Canada). Greatly appreciated if you could forward me the contact infofor Club members in Alberta and I can see if they'd like to join me for a day or 2 as I passthrough their areas.

It would be great to see lots of different faces in the book with a variety of hovercraft. Let meknow what you can do.

Any coverage you can give me in the Club newsletter would also go a long way to help. Andactually, maybe this is good time to put the word out that I'm recruiting for people to help innext years cross country adventure and anyone interested in being a part of the adventurecan contact me at [email protected]".

EXPLORERMODEL 11' X 22', 1600 Ib payload

The smaller VANGUARD 14model is poweredby a 28HP fuel injected engine.

Fuel injection is an important feature for hover-craft in that it does not allow water to be ingested intoa carburetor. This is particularly helpful in salt-wateruse as salt water will ruin an engine in very short or-der. BRIGGS & STRATTON is one manufacturer

that produce veryfuel efficient en-gines using fuelinjection for 25 HPmodel up to largerliquid cooled mod-els. These featuresalong with im-proved intake andexhaust manifoldshave reduced thenewer engine noiselevels.

VARIABLE AND REVERSE PITCH PROPELLER HUB

YES, yes, yes!!!! A most needed componentfor hovercraft / airboat use is now available. US

HOVERCRAFT in Anchorage, Alaska has nowdeveloped a hub that will adapt to multi-wing fanblades for small diameters and for lift applications.See below.

They also have a hub that will take other largermanufactured blades used for thrust. See photo toleft.

Imagine the possibilities using variable lift andthrust fans/propellers. Engine can stay at sameRPM and adjust pitch for neutral, forward or re-verse. WOW! For info contact

http://www.ushovercraft.comlnews/

"The variable pitch multiwing hub comes complete with blades and the base model is 5blades at $2400 USD. Each additional blade is $350 USD up to 16 blades. Diameter is cut tolength requested", says Chuck of US Hovercraft.

High qualify & light weight products-hurt to buy one time.Added weight to a deslgn-hurts evel'yflme you fly

As president and newsletter editor over the past few years, it has been a privilege, and real educationfrom the many contacts we have made. My own homebuilt crafthas been on hold for over 2 years, so I would like some time back to invest in it. As aclub we are really spread out across the country and so it is hard to have events. Asother priorities in life step in, I would like to step out from these two positions. Any vol-unteers or suggestionswould be grateful.

FORWARD I REVERSE AIR DUCTS

http://terryfallis.com/ category /hovercraft/

Terry says, quoting ftom his website, "Anyway, I like to think that Baddeck 1 is a ratherinnovativehovercraft design. It came to me and I sketched it out while in fIrst year engineer-ing, when I no doubt should have been taking notes in an Applied Math lecture. Not to gettoo technical about it, but moving to a single engine design and venting the thrust through theside thrust ports (see below), yields real dividends in weight, height, safety, noise, and control(in my humble opinion). Perhaps one day I'll take a stab at building it, although I do pushback the ftontiers of ineptitudewhenever tools of any kind are involved".

This is another method of applying air thrust for turning, forward or reverse using one fanonly. This has been use very successfully on model hovercraft.

REMEMBER- Keep it simple stupid is a good rule to use in buildinga hovercraft. In-evitablyevery builderworkingfrom a set of plans, wants to make some modification.Whether they do not like the plans, or just want to have their own unique craft, the result of-ten leads to more weight. Plans have been proven, so be sure that the modifications will notaffect safety and performance. Fasteners need to be wisely chosen for strength, vibration, corrosion etc in a hovercraft environment.

They can send it to:
