WARM-UP Question…

If you move from a cold region of the US to a warm region of the US what changes might you have to make in your:

• Clothing??• Food??• Home??

Explain why…

Human-Environmental Interaction

Human: Mankind

Environment: The surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates.

Page 4: How are people affected by their environment? Bodies of Water Climate Landforms Plant/Animal Life

ADAPTATION and modificationLike all animals, people must adapt to or modify

their environment. That includes the bodies of water, landforms, climate, plants, and animals they find in the place they live.

Page 5: How are people affected by their environment? Bodies of Water Climate Landforms Plant/Animal Life

Adapt – VS – Modify

• What is the difference between adapting and modifying??

• To ADAPT is to change something about your needs to fit your surroundings

• To MODIFY is to change something about your surroundings to fit your needs

Page 6: How are people affected by their environment? Bodies of Water Climate Landforms Plant/Animal Life

Adaptation

People have to adapt to their environment because they may not have a choice in where they live.

Page 7: How are people affected by their environment? Bodies of Water Climate Landforms Plant/Animal Life

Bodies of Water

• People must adapt to the water sources available to them

• Fresh water is essential to human life.• Why do you think this is so?

What bodies of water do we have around

us?

Where does our fresh water come from?

What is an Aquifer ??

ADAPTATION ??

Page 9: How are people affected by their environment? Bodies of Water Climate Landforms Plant/Animal Life

Landforms

• People must adapt to landforms. • Most people settle in flat, fertile valleys and

plains so they can build homes and grow crops.• Where would you live?

Page 10: How are people affected by their environment? Bodies of Water Climate Landforms Plant/Animal Life

How did this land affect how the Incas (One of the earliest civilizations) lived?

Hint…they lived high in the Andes Mountains with frigid temperatures and barren land

ADAPTATION ??

Page 11: How are people affected by their environment? Bodies of Water Climate Landforms Plant/Animal Life

Climate The reputation an area has for it’s weather

People must adapt to their climate• Climate affects

– How we dress– What we grow

PlantsLivestock

– What shelter we live in

Page 12: How are people affected by their environment? Bodies of Water Climate Landforms Plant/Animal Life

Climate

• Clothing?

• Plants?

• Livestock?

• Shelter?

• How do you think our climate affects how people live?

ADAPTATION ??

Plant and Animal Life

People have to adapt to the plants and animals found where they live.

People use these as sources of food, clothing, and building materials.

Page 14: How are people affected by their environment? Bodies of Water Climate Landforms Plant/Animal Life

• How do you think this animal affected the Native Americans way of life?

ADAPTATION ??

OUTPUT TIME

• Choose two regions from around the United States (refer to your notes!!) and describe how the people have ADAPTED to their environment.

• Be sure to consider the four main areas we discussed.

• This can be done with a partner!!

Modification

People often modify, or change, their environment to meet their

needs.Some examples are:

• Building of Dams (water modification)• Agriculture (landform and plant modification)

• Urban Growth (landform modification)• Useful forms of energy (climate and other)

Page 17: How are people affected by their environment? Bodies of Water Climate Landforms Plant/Animal Life

The Building of Dams

Dam: a barrier to obstruct the flow of water, built across a stream or river.

People construct dams to:– Prevent floods– Generate electric power– Store water for drinking and irrigation

Page 18: How are people affected by their environment? Bodies of Water Climate Landforms Plant/Animal Life

Agriculture

Agriculture is the growing of food, plants and livestock.

People clear land to prepare the land for growing crops and grazing livestock.

Page 19: How are people affected by their environment? Bodies of Water Climate Landforms Plant/Animal Life

Urban GrowthUrbanization: concentration of people

from rural (country) to urban (city) areas

People modify the landforms where they live by building towns and cities.

Page 20: How are people affected by their environment? Bodies of Water Climate Landforms Plant/Animal Life

Urban Growth

How has technology affected urban growth?

EnergyEnergy : the ability to do work(heat, mechanical, electrical)

_________________________________________

People cut down trees, mine for coal, and drill for oil to meet their energy needs.

________________________________________

RENEWABLE RESOURCES: can be re-made or reproduced (Ex: water, solar, wind)

________________________________________

NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES: can’t be re-made or reproduced (Ex: oil, natural gas, coal)

OUT PUT TIME• On page 36 write an ACROSTIC POEM using the

letters in one of the modifications we discussed. Example:

Threatens many peopleOver many miles it can travelRuins homes and landformsNever try to out run themAlways hard to predict when they are comingDoes damage to cars and businesses tooOutside is not a good place to be in one
