Introduction into the topic ‘BW Workspace’

A BW Workspace is a kind of „small sandbox‟ which IT defines. IT sets the boundaries, IT sets the amount of resources that a BW Workspace can consume and exposes some of the central data models to the BW Workspace (data of the models and their related semantics). The BW Workspace exposes the central data in a logical fashion only. The data is not copied over into the BW Workspace, which means that no data replication is needed.

The goal is to enable the Key Business Users to use this functionality in a dedicated and separated environment, which is deeply embedded and integrated in the existing BW landscape. The BW Workspaces bridge the gap between the architected and the departmental data marts. Therefore, Workspaces are integrated, independent and, as the usage of the SAP Business Warehouse Accelerator or HANA 1.0 running as a database for SAP NetWeaver BW 7.3 is mandatory, they are completely in-memory.

Reuse of key figures in a standard query (transient)

    Introduction

As we already learned from article „How can a Reference Query be used? ‟ from this article series, a standard query can be created during the CompositeProvider creation process in the BW Workspace Designer. In a Standard Query all fields of the CompositeProvider are added to the query as free characteristics or key figures. This query cannot be changed in the SAP Query Designer (it is transient). It changes automatically when the CompositeProvider is changed.

In the article „How can a Reference Query be used? ‟ the following statements have been made:

    - In addition to the Reference Query it is also possible to define a Standard Query (once per CompositeProvider).

This has to be revised due to newly introduced optimizations. Due to the fact that in such queries also „reference‟ restricted and calculated key figures can be used (which have been defined globally on the relevant Central Providers), it is meanwhile possible to create several standard queries with e.g. different selections of key figures.

    - When no MultiProvider has been used in the CompositeProvider there is just the option to create a Standard Query.

In the meantime it is also possible to create Reference Queries with queries which have been defined on other assigned Central Providers than the MultiProvider.

    Example

This example shows the BW Workspace Designer with ABAP-WEB Dynpro design with SAP NetWeaver 7.30 whereas chapter 3.2 shows the design of the new ABAP-WEB Dynpro design which comes with SAP NetWeaver 7.40.

Let us assume we are in the process of creating a CompositeProvider. In step 4 we are creating a standard query.

Step 4: Creation of a Standard Query

For the standard query we can select restricted or calculated key figures that have been defined globally on top of the MultiProvider “WSP_SAL_M”:

Step 2: Assigned and used MultiProvider

Step 2: Calculated and Restricted key figures defined globally on top of the MultiProvider

Reuse of globally defined key figures (copy)

    Introduction

Finally it is also possible to really copy globally defined restricted and calculated key figures from a Central Provider to a CompositeProvider. With this, they can be used and changed in a query, which is modeled with the help of the Query Designer on top of the CompositeProvider.

    Examples

This example is created with the new ABAP-WEB Dynpro design with SAP NetWeaver 7.40.

In general it is necessary to allow the copy functionality of key figures in a BW Workspace in the BW Workspace maintenance.

Step Step 2: BW Workspace Maintenance

In the BW Workspace Designer in section “My Workspace”, in the CompositeProvider tab, a tab strip “Key Figures” pops-up when the check box is checked in the BW Workspace maintenance.

Select a CompositeProvider and press “Manage Key Figures”:

    My Workspace

All key figures are shown which can be copied from the Central Provider (in this example from MultiProvider WSP_SAL_M or from the contained PartProviders) to the CompositeProvider.

The upper part of the screen “Available Key Figures” shows all calculated and restricted key figures that can be copied over to the CompositeProvider. Display “All Key Figures" also displays the key figures that cannot be copied. The “Can be copied” column shows which key figures can be copied and indicates the reason why key figures cannot be copied (where relevant). Choose “Add” to flag selected key figures for copying. This allows multiple key figures to be selected and added in one go. The key figures are then displayed in the lower part of the screen, under “Copied Key Figures”. The system also suggests a name. The real copy is only created upon saving.

The lower part of the screen “Copied Key Figures” shows the key figures that have already been copied to the CompositeProvider or that have been flagged for copying. If key figures have not been saved, the technical name of the copied key figure can still be changed. If key figures have been saved, the status field shows whether changes have been made to the original key figure. In this case, you can set the flag in the update column. When they are saved, all key figures flagged for updating are set to the current status of the original template key figure. Any changes made to the globally copied key figures on top of the CompositeProvider (target) via the Query Designer are lost. By pressing “Remove”, all selected key figures can be deleted from the CompositeProvider. The key figures are displayed again in the upper part of the screen, under “Available Key Figures”. Nevertheless they are only deleted permanently upon saving.

    Manage key figures

“Show All Key Figures” is pressed. In this example all key figures are copyable see column “Copyable”:

Three key figures are added and saved:
