HOW CAN WE START BENDING THE CURVE OF BIODIVERSITY DECLINE?

  • AGENDA

    • Context setting; the problem • From SDG to impact • Pathways into One Planet Approaches:

a possible solution? • One Planet Thinking • Examples and ways forward

  • THE PROBLEM

  • YOU CAN'T HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT (TOO)

  • IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO START BENDING THE CURVE

  • SDG WEDDING CAKE

  • THE SOLUTION
A FUNDAMENTAL NEW APPROACH IS NEEDED

    • A bigger picture is needed – by gaining insights in all environmental impacts.

    • Using scientific insights from local, regional and global boundaries.

    • Beyond efficiency gains• Focused on implementing policy• Context relevant – how do we translate global goals to local

action?• Based on fair allocation • Companies working together with leading NGO’s, academia

    and consultants.

  • INVENTORY INTO ONE PLANET APPROACHES

  • BACKBONE OF OUR APPROACH

    • Based on latest scientific knowledge

    • Building upon existing work by others

    • Context relevant

  • WHAT IS ONE PLANET THINKING?

  • IUCN (NL)
THE WORLD’S LARGEST ENVIRONMENTAL NETWORK

    • International processes & local impact• Science & practice• Global IUCN network• CSO partner network (>1000)

Sustainable investments• Integrated solutions• Local ownership• Private sector engagement

    • Annual budget 18 M€, 45 staff

  • A NORMATIVE LEARNING PROGRAM A SHARED JOURNEY

  • STRATEGIC FIT SYSTEMIC CHANGE

  • DEVELOP A PROOF OF CONCEPT

    • One Planet Thinking is a normative learning program. In 2018 our ambition is on the creation of a proof of concept- through developing a standardized approach and relevant tools development develop a standard approach - of One Planet Thinking.

    • Advancing science: To better understand where the planetary boundaries are, including its feed-back mechanisms and tipping points, and ethical questions.

    • Advancing business: To support relevant business and financial institutions (FI’s) to pilot the use of a One Planet Thinking approach in (a part of) their business and thereby enable sustainable and systemic decision making based on planetary science.

  • Led by WWF NL, together with IUCN NL, WUR, Metabolic and Plansup

Goals: Defining additional sustainability targets and a holistic intervention roadmapFurther developing the OPT toolkit for next implementation efforts

We are focusing on five impact areas – key impact drivers for the agri-food sector

We are integrating two methodologies (the CBWTs and the Bio-FP) with research and consultation at the landscape level
