Aim: How do we determine if something is living or non-living, using the common characteristics of living things?

Do Now: Humans are living things, but robots are non-living things (no matter how advanced they get). What are some similarities between the two, and what differences do you think makes even the most advanced robot a non-living thing?

HW: 1) Return class contract with bottom part filled out – DUE TOMORROW2) QUIZ TOMORROW- will be on today’s lesson only- use today’s classwork questions, also posted on class website under “Assignments”

Living things have at least 5 common characteristics

1. They are ORGANIZED2. They RESPOND to stimuli3. They use ENERGY (cell respiration)4. They GROW and DEVELOP5. They can REPRODUCE

Page 4: How can you tell the difference?. Aim: How do we determine if something is living or non-living, using the common characteristics of living things? Do

• An organism is any living thing.

• Organization means that the living things are made up of cells •Cells are orderly and structured living units that are capable of carrying out specific processes

• A stimulus (plural stimuli) is anything that gets an organism to respond.

• Example: Plants grow when sunlight is shown on them.–Sunlight is the stimulus–Plant growth is the response

Page 8: How can you tell the difference?. Aim: How do we determine if something is living or non-living, using the common characteristics of living things? Do

• Homeostasis is when a living thing can maintain a balance of proper conditions inside it so it can live.

• Homeostasis is one way an organism responds to stimuli.

Page 9: How can you tell the difference?. Aim: How do we determine if something is living or non-living, using the common characteristics of living things? Do

• Living things need energy to live•Animals get energy from eating food

•Plants make their own food using energy from the sun.

• The sun is the main source of energy for living things.

Page 10: How can you tell the difference?. Aim: How do we determine if something is living or non-living, using the common characteristics of living things? Do

•Living things have the ability to grow and change.

Page 11: How can you tell the difference?. Aim: How do we determine if something is living or non-living, using the common characteristics of living things? Do

•Reproduction is when a living organism can make another living organism like itself.

Page 12: How can you tell the difference?. Aim: How do we determine if something is living or non-living, using the common characteristics of living things? Do

• One way to remember ALL 8 characteristics of living things is to remember “MRS. GREN”– M movement– R respiration– S stimuli– G growth– R reproduction– E elimination of wastes– N nutrition

• These are parts of the five common characteristics that we have been discussing.

Page 13: How can you tell the difference?. Aim: How do we determine if something is living or non-living, using the common characteristics of living things? Do

• In order to consider something non-living, it must not have all of the 5 characteristics of living things.• Examples: chair, pen, desk, water

or• It was living or dead and has been processed (chemically altered)• Examples: paper, leather shoes, apple juice

Page 14: How can you tell the difference?. Aim: How do we determine if something is living or non-living, using the common characteristics of living things? Do

• In order to consider something dead, it must have been alive at one time and it no longer has any of the five characteristics of living things.

What makes something dead instead of being non-living?

PAIRWORK:

Partner 1 – Recorder write down answers that are discussed

and agreed upon

Partner 2 – Reporter share answers with the class when

called uponDirections:

You will be given one of these three things to analyze –

tree, paper, or wood. Tell me if your object is:

1)Living, Non-living, or Dead

2)Why is does or does not show one or more of the 5

characteristics of living things. (i.e. humans show

organization because they have cells and …)

Page 17: How can you tell the difference?. Aim: How do we determine if something is living or non-living, using the common characteristics of living things? Do

• Living• it is able to do all 5 functions necessary to all living things

1. It is made up of cells (organization)2. It can grow in response to sunlight3. It uses the sun’s energy to make

food4. It can grow5. It can make seeds that can grow into

more trees.

Page 18: How can you tell the difference?. Aim: How do we determine if something is living or non-living, using the common characteristics of living things? Do

• Dead• it is NOT able to do all 5 functions necessary to all living things

1. It is made up of cells (organization), but the cells are dead

2. It cannot grow in response to sunlight3. It cannot use the sun’s energy to make food4. It cannot grow5. It cannot make seeds that can grow into

more trees.

Page 19: How can you tell the difference?. Aim: How do we determine if something is living or non-living, using the common characteristics of living things? Do

• Non-Living• Although as a tree it was once living, now it is NOT able to do all 5 functions necessary to all living things and it has been processed

1. It was made up of cells (organization), but the cells were broken down when the wood was chopped up to make the paper

2. It cannot grow in response to sunlight3. It cannot use the sun’s energy to make food4. It cannot grow5. It cannot make seeds that can grow into more

trees.

Page 20: How can you tell the difference?. Aim: How do we determine if something is living or non-living, using the common characteristics of living things? Do

• When something has the potential for life, it means that it could have all of the characteristics of a living thing if it was under the right conditions.•Examples would be:

• Seeds• Eggs

Page 21: How can you tell the difference?. Aim: How do we determine if something is living or non-living, using the common characteristics of living things? Do

LIVINGHas the minimum 5 characteristics necessary to living things

NON-LIVINGDoes not have minimum 5 characteristics necessary to living things

DEADUsed to have 5 characteristics necessary to living things, but doesn't anymore.

Example: Tree

Example: Paper

Example: Wood
