HOW DO I BREAK THE ICE?
A GUIDE TO
USING TINYVOX ON IOS
TO MAKE MEANINGFUL
NEW CONNECTIONS FAST
THERE’S SOMEONE YOU’D LIKE TO KNOW
• you need some way of getting in touch with them
• they might be a celebrity or journalist on twitter…
• …a person you met a while ago that you want to meet again
• …or an OLD FRIEND you haven’t seen in a few years in person
• …or someone you meet in person in the present
• this happens spontaneously, without forethought
• you’re INSPIRED to get in touch with them again
• or you want to befriend a person you just met
• we always forget amazing ideas we have
• ideas are valuable and memorable
• send them an IDEA in your OWN VOICE to break the ice.
WHAT IS BREAKING THE ICE?
• Someone is on twitter all the time and you’d like to say something to them but you don’t know them personally
• You think someone could help you, and you’d like to ask
• Opening up the option for a further, deeper bond with someone you meet casually and would like to know better
• Giving both you and the person you’d like to know the option of communicating at a later time (getting the “digits”)
• Sparking a conversation with several followups on twitter
• Posting a “nice meeting you!” voicemail on their Facebook
Get their twitter, email, phone #, or be Facebook friends. Key.
HAVE TINYVOX ON YOUR HOME SCREEN READY TO GO• You can either make a voice message for them…
• …or tape their idea (ask permission first of course!!!)
FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU CAN SAY THAT’D INTEREST THEM
• If it’s their idea, of course this doesn’t apply.
• Have something to SAY. Maybe you need their HELP.
• Read their twitter feed and profile and find a topic.
• Did they just write about something? Got a question to ask?
• If you’re with them live, ask them cool questions
• You might meet someone with a cool project – tell them you can help them tell their story and tweet it out for them to RT
• Find a way to THANK them (hat tip to @garyvee)
OPEN TINYVOX AND TAPE !!!
• It’s like you’re leaving avoicemail – but over Twitter!
• They might not open an email but they often read tweets
• If you’re meeting them in person, ask their permission
• Ask them great questions like you’re interviewing them
• If they’ve got a project, they can RT the audio you tweet out (podcasting)
• If you’re tweeting to them, enter their @username in the TAPE LABEL like pictured.
PAUSE ANDTYPE TEXT
• Need a break? Pause.
• Want to type while they hold forth? Hit the “Type text” button and you can type up their ideas while they talk as a summary.
IN PERSON? ASK THEM TO ADD THEMSELVES TO YOUR CONTACTS
• Open your Contacts app
• Add a New Contact
• Ask them to fill it outthemselves – it’s faster
IF THAT’S TOO MUCH, JUST EMAIL IT TO THEM
• Touch Share or the Play / Share button
• Touch the Email icon & pick “Email A Friend”
• Enter their email(they can type it in)
HOW DOES THIS BREAK THE ICE IN A UNIQUE WAY?
• Your voice communicates the real you
• It’s surprising and memorable to hear someone talk to you
• It’s easier than carefully composing an email
• Spoken words say more and can state things uniquely
• They probably will be intrigued and maybe even talk back
• If you get no reply, it’s not like you bothered them that much
• Follow up by friending them on Facebook with their email
• Keep in touch regularly – especially if you “got the digits” ;)
