How d oes your film opening represent particular social groups? How are film represented ideas in Sci-fi: The idea of a future dystopian society is represented through the time lapse, it gives the impression of how time and technology has advanced and developed. This fits the genre representation of the future worlds in the Sci-fi genre. The use of the bleak looking forest suggests that world is barren shell with no life. This is represented through the use of camera shots/angels. For example the opening shot, is a slow tilt downwards, this is a good representation as it doesn’t go straight into the action but keeps the audience on edge. How characters are represented in our sequence and in Sci-fi: Typically in the Sci-fi genre the main character is a male or in our case a male looking robot. The character in this film is an android. In our sequence we have represented it to be more human looking. This differs from other sci-fi films such as ‘IRobot’ as they look like robots. Our sequence gets this across well through the voice over and the idea that the robot is male looking conveys the stereotype in Sci-fi films that robots tend to be male another example of this would be ‘Moon’. The voice over explains that the govt. started the programme to introduce the robots into society but did not tell anyone. Now the programme has gone wrong they tell people. This is a good representation of how the lower class are usually the victims of the higher class’s mistakes (i.e. malfunctioning robots). This tends to be quite typical within the Sci-fi genre (I-Robot) as the lower class look up to the higher class for help and guidance. In Sci-fi the bond is generally broken, but it appeals to our target audience as it sets up the role/task for the underdog/hero of the film.

How are film represented ideas in Sci-fi:

The idea of a future dystopian society is represented through the time lapse, it gives the impression of how time and technology has advanced and developed.

How characters are represented in our sequence and in Sci-fi:

Typically in the Sci-fi genre the main character is a male or in our case a male looking robot.
