HOW DUBAWI HAS HELPEDEASE THE BLUES
By Emma Berry
Almost two decades ago, on a June day that still sparkles in the
memory while others have faded into dim recesses of the mind,
a horse named with considerable portent by his owner and
breeder Sheikh Mohammed held Royal Ascot in his thrall.
Just as he had done in the Dubai World Cup that March, Dubai
Millennium (Seeking The Gold) rendered pursuit almost
pointless when stringing along his five rivals in the G1 Prince of
Wales's S. to have them finish at an eight-length remove or
more.
Up high in the old stand that day, those at Ascot with the
serious business of racing on their minds began their applause
while the colt was still only halfway along the straight, so
unquestionable was his impending victory. What we didn't
realise then was that it was the last time we would see Dubai
Millennium in his majestic pomp. As Jerry Bailey tipped his hat
to the injured Frankie Dettori and flew to the ground in an
extravagant dismount, with him landed dreams of further glory.
For on the day that Dettori returned to action after the plane
crash that so nearly claimed his life, Dubai Millennium suffered
his own reversal with a hind leg fracture sustained at morning
exercise in early August. Cont. p2
NOSEDA TO RETIRE FROM TRAINING Jeremy Noseda, who has been training in Newmarket since
1998 and whose greatest wins include a St Leger and a Breeders=
Cup, is set to retire from training.
"The time is right for me to walk away," said Noseda. "I will be
leaving the sport with a smile on my face and with a lot of great
memories."
In 2004, Noseda notched an excellent training feat when
sending Wilko (Awesome Again) to Lone Star Park in Texas for
the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile for the 11th start of his 2-year-old
campaign.
A maiden winner and multiple group-placed, Wilko sprang a
20-1 shock under Frankie Dettori in his first start on the dirt,
with the subsequent dual Classic winner Afleet Alex (Northern
Afleet) in second.

How Dubawi Has Helped Ease The Blues cont.
What would have seemed a devastating blow then was a mere
forerunner to a far greater tragedy that was to befall the horse.
On Apr. 29 the following year, his life was ended desperately
prematurely by grass sickness, midway through his first season
at Dalham Hall Stud.
Less than a year after his demise, his truncated first crop
appeared, with many of the resulting 56 foals being bought
privately by the sheikh in a bid to find his champion's heir. The
ninth to be born was already in his ownership, having been
foaled at Kildangan Stud to the Oaks d'Italia winner Zomaradah
(GB) (Deploy {GB}) on Feb. 7, 2002. In a beautifully produced
book commemorating Dubai Millennium and depicting all of his
offspring, the strong bay colt who would come to be known as
Dubawi (Ire) is the final foal to feature. It wasn't the last time he
would be prominent on the back pages.
By a wide margin, Dubawi was his sire's best runner, winning
the G1 National S. during an unbeaten juvenile campaign. He
became a Classic winner in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and then
emulated his father with victory in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois
after a valiant effort over a trip just beyond reach when third in
the Derby.
In 2006, he again followed in his father's footsteps, this time to
stand at Dalham Hall Stud, though at a fee a quarter of the size
of that commanded by Dubai Millennium. Though robust and
obviously talented, the compact Dubawi did not share his sire's
film star swagger and, for a stallion who now stands for
,250,000B10 times greater than his opening price--it seems
scarcely believable that he was once on offer at just ,15,000 in
that 'difficult' fourth season.
In the age of Galileo (Ire), it's all too easy to overlook the
achievements of Dubawi. The significance of his stud career will
not be lost on Sheikh Mohammed's operation, however,
especially since Dubawi notched a key milestone last Friday at
Epsom when the Charlie Appleby-trained Space Blues (GB)
posted the 100th stakes victory for his sire in the royal blue of
Godolphin.
That the 'home team' accounts for so many of Dubawi's 169
individual stakes winners, and indeed 12 of his 39 Group 1
winners, should come as no surprise. After all, the Godolphin
mares not only have first call on his book, but Sheikh
Mohammed and his sales team routinely snap up many of his
elite offerings at public auction. Nevertheless, from Sand Vixen
(GB)'s first strike in the Listed St Hugh's S. on Aug. 14, 2009,
which was followed a month later by the G2 Champagne S.
victory for another first-crop member, Poet's Voice (GB), the
stream of black-type winners from this fertile source has greatly
boosted Godolphin's racecourse success over the last decade.
Those two early winners would go on to make their mark at
stud. Sand Vixen, later winner of the G2 Flying Childers S., is the
dam of G1 Jebel Hatta winner Dream Castle (GB) (Frankel {GB}),
while Poet's Voice went on to claim Group 1 success himself in
the Queen Elizabeth II S. before carving out a respectable stud
career which was cut short by a fatal heart attack at the age of
just 11.
Darley currently stands two of Dubawi's sons at Dalham Hall
Stud in Night Of Thunder (Ire) and Postponed (Ire), while
Frontiersman (GB) is at Overbury Stud and Hunter's Light (Ire) at
Haras du Logis. He is also represented at the Aga Khan Studs'
Haras de Bonneval by Zarak (Fr) and by two Juddmonte-bred
sons, Time Test (GB) at the National Stud and New Bay (GB) at
Ballylinch Stud. Meanwhile, Makfi (GB), the first of Dubawi's two
2000 Guineas winners, is at stud in Japan after standing in
England-during which time he sired the Poule d'Essai des
Poulains winner Make Believe (GB)--and then France.
These are early days when it comes to assessing whether any
of these young stallions can go on to add another postscript to
the Dubai Millennium story. It is, however, fair to say that
Seeking The Gold, who lived to the age of 31 at Claiborne Farm
but had scant representation in Europe, now has a worthy line in
existence in this part of the world even if his most celebrated
son to race here was granted so little time at stud.
The story is far from being fully written.

How Dubawi Has Helped Ease The Blues cont.
This year alone, Dubawi has been represented by a
chart-topping 20 black-type winners, with 14 of those being
group or graded winners. In the past week those figures were
boosted by victory in the G2 Badener Meile for The Revenant
(GB), a Grade III win at Belmont Park for the Newsells Park
Stud-bred Demarchelier (GB), and a second Epsom stakes
success, following that of Space Blues, for Anna Nerium (GB) in
the G3 Princess Elizabeth S.
As that snapshot shows, Dubawi's success is far-reaching, but it
is enjoyed most strongly closest to home.
Noseda To Retire From Training cont. from p1
Noseda enjoyed an excellent spell through the spring and fall
of 2006, collecting the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and G1 St James=s
Palace S. with Araafa (Ire) (Mull of Kintyre), and later the G1 St
Leger with Sixties Icon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Sixties Icon won an
additional five group races.
In 2010, Noseda registered one of the more remarkable
performances of his training career when sending the Coolmore
partners= Laddies Poker Two (Ire) (Choisir {Aus}) out to win the
Wokingham S. at Royal Ascot off a one year, eight month layoff.
Laddies Poker Two is now best known as the dam of Coolmore=s
dual Guineas and four-time Group 1 winner Winter (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}).

Noseda To Retire From Training cont.
Later in 2010, Noseda took the G1 Irish St Leger with Sans
Frontieres (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Another standout for Noseda was
Fleeting Spirit (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), winner of the 2009 G1
July Cup.
"I have been lucky enough to enjoy many fabulous days as a
trainer and also earlier in my career,@ Noseda said. "I would like
to thank my owners for their support over the last 20 years and,
in particular, I would like to thank my staff for all of their highly
skilled work and dedication. If there is sadness at this time it is
that I will no longer be here for them. Several worked with me
at Godolphin and then for me in Newmarket. Indeed there are
those who I would count as very good friends. I know that they
are among the very best staff in Newmarket and will have no
trouble finding good positions within other stables.
"I have no immediate plans for the future, except for the fact
that I will be taking a two-week summer holiday with my sons
Richard and James. It will be the first time I have enjoyed a
proper summer holiday with them and I'm really looking
forward to that."
CALYX OUT OF ROYAL ASCOT Last year=s G2 Coventry S. winner Calyx (GB) (Kingman {GB})
has been ruled out of this year=s Royal meeting and a shot at the
G1 Commonwealth Cup after sustaining a pastern injury.
The John Gosden-trained Calyx was shelved after Royal Ascot
last year due to injury, and returned with a four-length victory in
the G3 Pavilion S. at Ascot on May 1. He was a shock second as
the heavy favourite, however, in the G2 Sandy Lane S. at
Haydock on May 25, after which the injury was uncovered.
Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager for owner/breeder Khalid
Abdullah, said, "Following his run in the Sandy Lane S., it has
been revealed that Calyx sustained a pastern injury which is now
being investigated. This will rule him out of the Commonwealth
Cup at Royal Ascot, but we are hopeful that he could run again
in the latter half of the season."

As first foal of these connections= G2 Blandford S. and G3 Blue
Wind S. winner and G1 Epsom Oaks runner-up Tarfasha (Ire)
(Teofilo {Ire}), Rakan has family honour to uphold and he took
an important first step towards that with this game black-type
breakthrough. Off the mark in style over a mile here in October,
the bay had finished fourth in the G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby
Trial S. at a mile and a quarter on his 3-year-old bow on May 12
and this served as a natural progression. Provided with a lead by
Barbados, he was sent up to wrest the advantage off that
Ballydoyle representative passing the two pole and gradually
asserted as Eminent Authority got going late to make it tight.
Trainer Dermot Weld is happy to let Rakan go to The Curragh=s
G1 Irish Derby on June 29. AThree-horse races are notorious and
he=s an extremely idle colt,@ he said. AHe had a hold-up over the
winter, so he=s only on his way back. He needed the run in the
Derrinstown and I think he=ll progress a lot from today=s run. He
got there to win easy and got a bit tired again.
Ideally what he=d love is a real true-run race where you can
ride him from off the pace and produce him. We=ll see how he
comes out of this race and speak to the owner, but the Irish
Derby is a definite possibility--the logical place to go with him.
He=s a good-actioned horse and handles good-to-firm ground
well. That=s lovely ground out there and perfect for every horse.
He=s bone idle and that=s why he=s difficult to get fit. He does
absolutely nothing at home.@
The aforementioned Tarfasha, who found only the same
operation=s Sea the Stars filly Taghrooda (GB) too strong in the
Epsom Classic five years ago, is a half-sister to four black-type
performers including the G2 Doncaster Cup and G2 Goodwood
Cup hero Saddler=s Rock (Ire) (Sadler=s Wells) and Galileo Rock
(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who was placed in the G1 Epsom and Irish
Derbys and the G1 St Leger of 2013. The second dam Grecian
Bride is a half-sister to the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud-winning
sire Gamut (Ire) (Spectrum {Ire}), while the family also features
the GI E. P. Taylor S. and GII Sheepshead Bay S. winner Tannery
(Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}). Tarfasha=s as-yet unraced 2-year-old
filly is by Dansili (GB), while she also has a yearling colt by
Dubawi (Ire) and a filly foal by Muhaarar (GB).

Having started off his racing life at this level, Flight Risk was
remarkably taking part in a handicap for the first time when last
seen on his 41st outing at The Curragh on May 24. Reliably
consistent once again when runner-up in that seven-furlong
contest, the veteran chestnut, whose last win came in the G3
Ballycorus S. over seven here in June 2017, was arguably at a
peak here as he dealt a blow to some useful rivals. Racing with
one behind early, he was delivered with a powerful surge down
the outside to take command at the furlong pole and stretched
out with enthusiasm to the line.

The record-priced Dundeel colt | Magic Millions
RECORD DUNDEEL COLTLIGHTS UP NATIONAL SALE
By Bren O=Brien
Hawkes Racing lit up Day 2 of the Magic Millions National
Yearling Sale, paying a combined $1.35 million for three lots
including a record $850,000 for a Dundeel (NZ) colt.
At A Glance$ Lot 2267, by Dundeel (NZ) out of Santa Rocks (Fastnet
Rock), fetched a record price for this sale of $850,000
$ The sale average surged to $52,556 at the end of Book
1, nearly $10,000 more than last year
$ The clearance rate was down on last year, from 71% to
69.2%
$ The median remained at $30,000, the same as it was 12
months ago
$ The gross for the sale rocketed from $9.9m in 2018 to
$12.56m in 2019
Hawkes, Orbis get Dundeel colt Team Hawkes and Orbis Bloodstock acted decisively to secure
what they believed was clearly the top lot of the sale, going to
new heights to secure the Dundeel colt from Arrowfield's Draft.
The bidding stopped at $850,000 for the Lot 2267, setting a
new record for a yearling through this sale.
He is the first foal out of the three-time winner Santa Rocks
(Fastnet Rock), who John, Michael and Wayne Hawkes trained
for a syndicate of clients which included Arrowfield and Henry
Field. She hails from the family of multiple American G1 winner
Harlan's Holiday (USA) (Harlan {USA}).
Arrowfield's bloodstock manager Jon Freyer said while the colt
was a standout, it was an excellent result in the current market.
"We thought he was a particularly good colt, in fact we
thought he was a special colt. The way the sale was we were
pleasantly surprised with how he sold," he said. "A lot of the
good judges had liked him. It was just a matter of how far they
were prepared to go. I think they bought him on behalf of Orbis
Bloodstock. The Hawkes trained Santa Rocks, the dam, for us,
and she was really about to hit her straps and she went wrong
and retired. They had a good opinion of her and thought she
was a black type filly, and she is a Fastnet Rock mare."
It is the second highest price ever for a Dundeel yearling, just
short of the $900,000 for the colt out of Champion mare Miss
Finland (Redoute's Choice) purchased by Boomer Bloodstock at
the 2017 Magic Millions Sale.
AHe was the best horse in the sale,@ co-trainer Wayne Hawkes
said. AUnfortunately when you come to Magic Millions you have
to pay for them B they don=t give them out at the front door!
AWe really liked him. We think he will be a real classic
three-year-old type horse and we thought he was the best
Dundeel of the year to be totally honest. We hadn=t seen one
that we=d really fallen in love with by Dundeel B this was the first
one this year, so we made sure we got him. You know when you
break a record it=s dear,@ Hawkes added. AI think John Moore
might have been the underbidder and they obviously wanted
him too. If he=s a good horse he will be cheap B it=s as simple as
that.@
Dundeel has enjoyed a fantastic season, with Group 1 winners
in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, highlighted by
Castelvecchio, who won the G1 Champagne S. He ended Book 1
as the leading sire, having sold 12 yearlings for a total of
$1.88m. Arrowfield barnmate Snitzel claimed honours for
leading sire by average (more than 3 lots), selling four at
$211,500 apiece.
Group 1 stamped all over him Team Hawkes had earlier gone to $330,000 to buy Lot 2207, a
Redoute's Choice colt, again from Arrowfield's draft.

Redoute=s Choice colt out of National Colour
He is out of the South African and UAE Group 1 winner
National Colour (SAF) (National Assembly {Can}), who has
already produced a pair of Group 1 winners who are full
brothers to this colt in Rafeef and Mustaaqem. He is the
penultimate foal from National Colour, who produced a Snitzel
filly last year.
"He was a very good Redoute's colt out of a Group 1 winner,
and a full brother to two Group 1 winners, quite a rare thing to
see in a yearling sale." Freyer said. AI'd suspect he's the only one
in the world this year that would have those credentials."
The Hawkes also paid $170,000 for Lot 2358, a Mossman colt
from the draft of Baramul Stud to end Book 1 as the biggest
buyer for the sale, with $1.43m across four lots.
Arrowfield boasted the biggest draft and ended up the most
successful vendor, selling 19 for $2.1 million including three of
the top four lots on Day 2.
Hong Kong-based Muskoka Farm paid the equal second
highest price of the day, $430,000, for Lot 2303, a Not A Single
Doubt colt who is the full brother to recent G3 Ken Russell
Memorial Classic winner Stronger.
Stronger went for seven figures at last year's Easter Sale, and
this colt was less than half the price. Their grand-dam is the
quality racemare and excellent producer, Ain't Seen Nothin'
(Nothin Leica Dane), who has produced the stakes-winning trio
Bachman (All American), Stepitup (Hussonet (USA) and
Ain'tnofallenstar (Starcraft {NZ}).
Enuff to secure colt George Moore Bloodstock set a new mark for a price for the
first crop of Woodside Park's Rich Enuff, paying $430,000 for a
colt catalogued as Lot 2319.
He was the first foal born on Rae-Louise Farmer's Fernrigg
Farm and is from Tanzanite (Jet Spur) the half-sister to
stakes-winner Any Suggestion (Lion Hunter) from the family of
Group 1 winner Show A Heart (Brave Warrior). He was also the
only Rich Enuff sold for the week.
"Nobby as he=s known at home was the first foal born on
Fernrigg,@ Farmer said. ABernie Howlett (the breeder) is a good
friend of ours and he sent us mares in the first season. He had a
bit of a setback earlier on and missed another sale and I was so
happy when Bernie rang and asked if we would prepare him for
this sale. We loved him from the day he was born. He was the
first horse I foaled on my own, I was a nervous wreck. I grew
attached to him from the first day I laid my eyes on him. To
bring him up here and get that result for Bernie was huge,@ she
added.
Lot 2240, a Snitzel colt from Quaintly (Giant's Causeway {USA})
offered by Highgrove Stud sold to Aquis Farm for $250,000,
while the top Zoustar for the day was a colt from Esker Lodge,
which sold to Emerald Bloodstock for $200,000.
Confirming the pre-sale predictions that it was a colts' sale, the
top ten lots on Day 2 were all colts. The top two fillies on Day 2
both went for $150,000. Lot 2554 is by So You Think (NZ),
offered by Rosemont Stud and was sold to Cornerstone Stud,
while Lot 2368 is a Dundeel (NZ) filly offered by KBL
Thoroughbreds and was sold to Shane Nichols Racing.
While there were some highlights for Arrowfield, Freyer said
Book 1 had been a difficult one for a lot of vendors.
"It was a tough sale in many ways. While there were buyers
there for the particularly good horse. The other ones, with the
clearance rate you would have liked to have been a little
higher," he said.
Marked overall improvement Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch was happy
with the way the sale improved.
AI=m really pleased on the whole,@ he said. AThe clearance rate
is obviously a little bit disappointing but the average has climbed
from $43,000 to $52,000 B that=s a considerable increase.
AWe had some awesome bidding duels with the $850,000 colt
and the two other $430,000 sellers in particular. It goes to show
if you bring the right article here you can get a huge result.@
The sale concludes with Book 2 of the Yearling Sale on Friday
followed by the National Racehorse Sale, with 34 lots on offer.

BELMONT HAS ALWAYSBEEN THE GOAL FOR LOWS
WITH INTREPID HEART
By Christie DeBernardis
ELMONT, NY--It is not often in racing, or with horses in
general, that things go exactly according to plan, but Intrepid
Heart (Tapit) is one of the rare exceptions. When Robert and
Lawana Low purchased the $750,000 colt as a 2-year-old at OBS
April with the help of bloodstock agent Jacob West, they did so
with Saturday’s GI Belmont S. in mind.
The gray’s sire Tapit is responsible for three Belmont winners
in Tonalist, Creator and Tapwrit. His dam is by Touch Gold, a
Belmont winner himself, and his half-brother Commissioner
(A.P. Indy) finished just a head behind the aforementioned
Tonalist in the 2014 Test of a Champion.
“We really admired his breeding,” said Robert Low. “Being a
Tapit out of a Touch Gold mare, he has Belmont written all over
his pedigree. With him kind of coming to hand late, it was too
late for the [GI Kentucky] Derby and [GI] Preakness, but perfect
for the Belmont. We have been thinking Belmont from the day
we bought him. Todd Pletcher guaranteed us the win.”
The owner of the trucking company Prime Inc. paused a
moment and laughed, “I thought I'd get a chuckle out of you with
that. None of these horses come with any guarantee, but we did
talk about the Belmont when we bought him. Actually, [Pletcher]
did say something like that, but I think it was in jest.” Cont. p3
THURSDAY’S TRACKSIDE BELMONT STAKES
151 REPORTby Steve Sherack
ELMONT, NY--With the star-studded GI Belmont Stakes card
right around the corner, the main track was in terrific shape for
training hours early Thursday morning despite receiving a
soaking from heavy overnight rains.
Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, sporting a New York Yankees
cap, got a feel for the track walking the freshly harrowed
surface, labeled “good,” under a dense cloud cover and
extremely humid conditions just after 6 a.m.
Mark Casse watched a set train from the rail, including the
GI Longines Just A Game S.-bound Got Stormy (Get Stormy), and
began contemplating whether or not to send his Belmont S. duo
of War of Will (War Front) and Sir Winston (Awesome Again)
out a little earlier than usual due to the sticky, summer-like
conditions. Cont. p5

Robert & Lawana Low with Magnum Moon | Coady
Belmont Always the Plan for Intrepid Heart cont. from p1
Intrepid Heart proved he was special right from the start,
graduating by 7 3/4 lengths at first asking at Oaklawn Feb. 18
and earning the ‘TDN Rising Star’ nod. He followed suit with a
wide-trip Keeneland optional claimer win Apr. 5 and finished
third last time as the favorite in Belmont’s GIII Peter Pan S.
May 11 after stumbling at the start.
“He stumbled out of the gate and kind of chased a pretty fast
pace, running up within two or three lengths of the pace,” Low
said. “It just set that race up in a way that is not suited to what
he wants to do. After the wire, he galloped out very strongly in
front of everybody. It just wasn't a good setup with the poor
start and the fast pace. If we had to do it over again, and you
could predict how these things are going to come out, you might
do it differently. But, we all thought it was a fairly good race
considering the situation. He gave us hope.”
Intrepid Heart will be piloted by Hall of Famer John Velazquez
Saturday. Pletcher and Velazquez each have two Belmont wins
to their credit, including one as a team with Rags to Riches.
“Johnny V rode Capote Belle to our first Grade I win in the
Test,” Low said. “We love Johnny. We are very fortunate to have
this trainer/jockey combo.”
The Lows got hooked on racing early on in their career as
owners thanks to Capote Belle, who won the Test in their first
year in the business in 1996.
“We got hooked early on,” said Low, who lives on a farm in
Primatara, Missouri, with his wife and their band of 14
broodmares. “One of the first fillies we bought named Capote
Belle won the GI Test S. at Saratoga, so we were hooked for life
after that. We had to wait for that next Grade I for a long time,
but we have had some good horses and really enjoy the game
and enjoy being on the farm with the mares and babies.”

That second top-level score came just last year courtesy of
‘TDN Rising Star’ Magnum Moon (Malibu Moon) in the GI
Arkansas Derby, which was extra special to Low as he grew up
going to Oaklawn Park.
“We are in Missouri and always went to the races at Oaklawn
Park,” said Low. “Winning the Arkansas Derby is right up there,
for us with winning the Kentucky Derby. It was very exciting for
us. He also won the [GII] Rebel up there. He is just a really nice
horse. He is a fast horse and, it turns out, a very courageous
horse. You may recall, he had a broken leg, a very bad injury,
and he is still recovering from it. He is at the Cornell [Ruffian]
Clinic at Belmont.”
In addition to his time spent at Oaklawn Park, Low grew up
around horses and always dreamed of one day owning a
racehorse.
“I was a farm kid,” said Low, who has 14 horses in training and
11 2-year-olds in the pipeline. “My mom and dad went to
Oaklawn Park to the races. I got some exposure to it early and it
has kind of stuck with me. If I ever hit a home run, I was going to
buy a racehorse and, finally, it was fortunate enough to happen
for us.”
Low’s wife Lawana did not have the same equine upbringing,
but her passion for horses is quite strong.
“She just kind of got sucked in, but she was a country gal and it
kind of came naturally to her,” said Low. “She loves it, probably
more than I do.”
When the Lows first got into racing, back in the Capote Belle
days, they started with a trainer who, coincidentally, had a
relative working in their company.
“We started with a young guy from down there named Danny
Peitz. I am in the trucking business and his brother worked in
the parts department in our shop, so we just kind of made a
connection,” said Low. “We were with Danny for several years.
In the last four or five years, we have spread around a little bit
more. We got hooked up with Todd Pletcher through Jacob
West. Todd has most of our store-bought horses. Our
homebreds still go primarily to Danny and Steve Margolis.”
The Lows have come a long way in the past 23 years and have
had quite a bit of success, but a win in the Belmont would be a
dream come true.
“To win one of the Triple Crown races would just be
awesome,” Low said. “I think every owner has a goal of winning
one of the Triple Crown races or all of them if possible. It would
mean a lot to us. I am getting amped up already.”

Tacitus gallops over Big Sandy Thursday | Sarah Andrew
Everfast trains at Belmont beneath Tammy
Fox Thursday | Sarah Andrew
Thursday’s Belmont Trackside Report cont. from p1
Former Doug O’Neill assistant trainer Jack Sisterson,
meanwhile, off to a promising beginning since striking out on his
own last summer, kept a close eye on the galloping gray Bandua
(The Factor), who lines up in the GI Manhattan S. He will also
saddle Lexitonian (Speightstown) in the GI Woody Stephens S.
and Vexatious (Giant’s Causeway) in Friday’s GII New York S.
While Belmont S. live longshot Spinoff (Hard Spun) went about
his business for Todd Pletcher at the adjacent training track, 9-5
morning-line favorite Tacitus (Tapit) enjoyed another very
impressive session galloping over Big Sandy with Mott watching
aboard a stable pony while the sun began to play a bit of hide-
and-seek just after 6:40 a.m.
Speaking of the mighty Tapit--sire of three winners in the last
five Belmonts--he will also be represented in this year’s final leg
of the Triple Crown with Bourbon War (Tapit) and ‘TDN Rising
Star’ Intrepid Heart (Tapit). The former, looking to rebound
from a disappointing eighth in the GI Preakness S., was getting
over the ground nicely while galloping over the main oval at
7 a.m.
Casse, in fact, did decide to call that audible, and sent his
aforementioned pair, led by the Preakness winner War of Will,
out to train about 20 minutes later. They had previously visited
the track following the 8:30 a.m. break since shipping in to New
York. Under a nice hold once again by exercise rider Kim Carroll,
War of Will seemed a bit more relaxed during Thursday’s
exercise while striding powerfully down the lane.
With Tammy Fox aboard and equipped with a camera on her
red helmet, longshot Preakness runner-up Everfast (Take
Charge Indy) trained after the renovation break as did two-time
G1 Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}).
The latter, fitted with a pair of cheek pieces and a Godolphin
blue saddle towel, remained on his left lead for most of the
stretch while blowing out three furlongs in :36.42 for an
absolutely loaded renewal of the GI Runhappy Metropolitan H.
With training hours winding down as the temperatures
continued to rise, GII Wood Memorial S. runner-up and former
claimer Tax (Arch) closed things out galloping over the sun-
splashed training track just after 9:30 a.m.

War of Will | Sarah Andrew
THE TDN BELMONT PREVIEW, PRESENTED
BY WINSTAR
by T.D. Thornton
This week’s TDN Triple Crown feature examines the GI
Belmont S. entrants listed in “likeliest winner” order.
1) WAR OF WILL (c, War Front--Visions of Clarity {Ire}, by
Sadler’s Wells)
O-Gary Barber. B-Flaxman Holdings Limited (KY). T-Mark Casse.
Sales History: $175,000 RNA Ylg ‘17 KEESEP; €250,000 2yo ‘18
ARQMAY. Lifetime Record: GISW, 10-4-1-1, $1,491,569.
Last Start: 1st, GI Preakness S., PIM, May 18
Equineline PPs. Caulfield on War of Will.
War of Will’s torqued-up tactical speed and his ability to punch
back hard when encountering in-race adversity is what sets him
apart from everyone else in the 12-furlong Belmont. The betting
logically drills down to this GI Preakness S. winner and top-notch
rival Tacitus (Tapit), but even if those two are very close in talent
and stamina, this €250,000 ARQMAY War Front colt gets the
edge because of his consistent ability to make his own breaks by
getting out of the gate alertly, settling into high-cruise mode,
and responding with an admirable reserve of power when called
upon in the stretch. Trainer Mark Casse said War of Will has put
on a good 40 or 50 pounds since the Preakness, and there is no
shortage of speed drawn to the inside for him to target from a
post nine draw. War of Will can become the first horse since
Afleet Alex in 2005 to complete the Preakness-Belmont double,
accomplished by just 12 other horses (excluding the 13 Triple
Crown winners). That list includes Man o' War (1920), Native
Dancer (1953), Nashua (1955) and Damascus (1967).
2) TACITUS (c, Tapit--Close Hatches, by First Defence) O/B-
Juddmonte Farms, Inc. (KY). T-Bill Mott. Lifetime Record: MGSW
& GISP, 5-3-0-1, $953,000.
Last Start: 3rd, GI Kentucky Derby, CD, May 4
Equineline PPs.
Tacitus went straight to the top of a lot of people’s Belmont S.
bet lists the moment he splashed home fourth (elevated to third
via DQ) in the GI Kentucky Derby. This large-framed Tapit
homebred for Juddmonte got a very meaningful schooling out of
that effort, breaking a stutter-step slow, checking off heels,
settling, responding when cued three-eighths out, and getting
fanned six wide into the lane. His pedigree is stout with stamina
(by Tapit out of an Eclipse champion mare who excelled in dirt
routes), and while I had early-season reservations about Tacitus
being a bit too lackadaisical and untested against top-level
competition, both his traffic-troubled GII Wood Memorial S. win
and his Derby showing under arduous circumstances suggests
he’s toughening up and maturing. Another Juddmonte
colorbearer, Empire Maker in 2003, was the last horse to turn
the Wood-Belmont double. Cont. p7

3) MASTER FENCER (c, Just a Way {Jpn}--Sexy Zamurai, by
Deputy Minister)
O/B-Katsumi Yoshizawa (JPN). T-Koichi Tsunoda. Lifetime
Record: SP-Jpn, 7-2-2-0, $234,392.
Last Start: 6th, GI Kentucky Derby, CD, May 4
Equineline PPs.
Master Fencer (Jpn) figured to have no shot on paper in the
Derby and was probably underlaid at 58-1. But this homebred
son of Just A Way {Jpn) ran a deceptively good seventh (put up
to sixth) after settling on the rail far behind the field. He was still
last at the quarter pole and tried to pulse through at the fence
while being driven through both mud and the traffic of stalled
contenders, but once he found a seam, Master Fencer uncoiled
like he meant business and jockey Julien Leparoux had him
gallop out past everyone except for Maximum Security (New
Year’s Day). “He's very easy to be around. He's a kind horse and
very calm and professional. It makes my job easy,” said
Leparoux. “A lot depends on the pace in front and how the track
plays.”
4) SIR WINSTON (c, Awesome Again--La Gran Bailadora, by
Afleet Alex)
O/B-Tracy Farmer (KY). T-Mark Casse. Sales History: $50,000
RNA Ylg ‘17 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: SW & MGSP, 9-2-1-1,
$161,773.
Last Start: 2nd, GIII Peter Pan S., BEL, May 11
Equineline PPs.
Sir Winston’s form doesn’t exactly leap off the past
performance page, but he does have some subtly good lines
that could signal a turnaround over 12 furlongs. This Awesome
Again homebred is out of an Afleet Alex (2005 Belmont winner)
mare, and three of his four starts in 2019 have come over nine
furlongs, so the distance appears within his scope. The 100
Beyer he earned when six wide off the turn and finishing well to
get second over this same surface in the GIII Peter Pan S. last
month is the top speed figure among the Belmont entrants, and
Sir Winston only finished four lengths behind the
then-blossoming Tacitus in the GII Tampa Bay Derby. Beware of
this “other” Mark Casse trainee at double-digit odds.
5) SPINOFF (c, Hard Spun--Zaftig, by Gone West)
O/B-Wertheimer et Frere (KY). T-Todd Pletcher. Lifetime Record:
MGSP, 5-2-0-0, $260,000.
Last Start: 18th, GI Kentucky Derby, CD, May 4
Equineline PPs. Cont. p8
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 8 OF 17 • THETDN.COM FRIDAY • JUNE 7, 2019
“Spinoff just hated the track,” said trainer Todd Pletcher after
this Hard Spun colt’s next-to-last Derby run in the slop. “He
didn’t really want any part of it.” Spnioff was a pace presence
while five wide into the first turn and down the backstretch, but
soon opted out of the battle. I kind of like his
better-than-it-looks GII Louisiana Derby second in which he was
bumped leaving post 10, then got hooked four wide on club turn
while seeking the lead. He forced the issue through legit splits,
then got run down in the final sixteenth of the long Fair Grounds
stretch. Pletcher has won three Belmonts (2007, 2013, 2017)
while jockey Javier Castellano is seeking his first.
6) TAX (g, Arch--Toll, by Giant’s Causeway)
O-R. A. Hill Stable, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, Hugh Lynch &
Corms Racing Stable. B-Claiborne Farm & Adele Dilschneider
(KY). T-Danny Gargan. Lifetime Record: GSW, 6-2-2-1, $326,300.
Last Start: 14th, GI Kentucky Derby, CD, May 4
Equineline PPs.
Tax might have been ranked a little higher on this list were it
not for the concerns about his latest workout that trainer Danny
Gargan voiced to Daily Racing Form last Saturday. His final
pre-Belmont breeze was termed “good, but it wasn’t awesome,”
yet Gargan emphasized he wouldn’t enter unless he “loved”
how this Arch gelding came out of that workout, so apparently
Tax is on the upswing. His Derby 15th (14th via DQ) is a tossout--
he broke alertly, patiently held a rail spot, was only about five
lengths off the lead when the field began to bunch, but had no
stretch kick and reportedly didn’t appreciate the sloppy
kickback. A more representative race in his past performances is
the Wood Memorial, in which he fought resolutely but was worn
down by the imposing Tacitus when beaten 1 1/4 lengths and
galloping out on even terms with the winner. His 15-1 odds
make him worth a flyer in exotics.
7) INTREPID HEART (c, Tapit--Flaming Heart, by Touch Gold)
‘TDN Rising Star’. O-Robert E. & Lawana L. Low. B-WinStar Farm
LLC & Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC (KY). T-Todd Pletcher. Sales
History: $750,000 2yo ‘18 OBSAPR. Lifetime Record: GSP,
3-2-0-1, $140,400.
Last Start: 3rd, GIII Peter Pan S., BEL, May 11
Equineline PPs.
This $750,000 OBSAPR Tapit gray is arriving a little late to the
Triple Crown party, but at healthy double-digit odds you get the
Classics-tested Todd Pletcher/John Velazquez tandem and a
2-for-3 up-and-coming colt who boasts solid speed figures,
tactical speed, and a pedigree that resonates with staying
power. Cont. p9

Bourbon War | Sarah Andrew
“Intrepid Heart is clearly bred for this race,” Pletcher said.
“He's by Tapit, who's had a lot of success [as a sire] in the race.
He's out of a Touch Gold mare. Touch Gold won the Belmont.
He's a half to Commissioner [second in the 2014 Belmont]. If you
look at his pedigree, it's A.P. Indy and Seattle Slew. There's a lot
of Belmont history supporting his pedigree. And, out of the
three Triple Crown races, I think pedigree plays the biggest role
in this one.”
8) BOURBON WAR (c, Tapit--My Conquestadory, by Artie
Schiller)
O-Bourbon Lane Stable & Lake Star Stable. B-Conquest Stables
(KY). T-Mark Hennig. Sales History: $410,000 Wlg ’16 KEENOV;
$525,000 Ylg ’17 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: GSP, 6-2-1-0,
$202,100. Last Start: 8th, GI Preakness S., PIM, May 18
Equineline PPs.
Bourbon War strikes me as a sophomore who is still a work in
progress. The blinkers will come off for the Belmont after a
one-race try in the Preakness that resulted in a non-threatening
eighth. As one of three Tapit-sired horses in the third leg of the
Triple Crown, this $525,000 KEESEP colt is going to have to
either shake the reputation that he’s a pace-dependent closer or
show some other tactical dimension under new jockey Mike
Smith. He’s winless beyond the first-level allowance condition,
but don’t forget that sneaky-good second in the GII Fountain of
Youth S. when Bourbon War pounced into a collapsing pace
scenario and did surge past the winner a jump after the wire.

Awesome Again)
O-Calumet Farm. B-Extern Developments (KY). T-Dale Romans.
Sales History: $47,000 Ylg ‘17 KEEJAN. Lifetime Record: GISP,
11-1-2-1, $464,805.
Last Start: 2nd, GI Preakness S., PIM, May 18
Equineline PPs.
This $47,000 KEEJAN Take Charge Indy colt has bankrolled
nearly 10 times his auction price despite losing 10 straight races
after breaking his maiden at first asking last August at Ellis Park.
Although I’m sure his connections would like him to win another
race, those are some pretty nice paydays for picking up the
pieces, and Everfast is a typical Calumet Farm trainee in that he
is not shielded from racing and often overachieves with an
admirable grinder’s style. Given his past performances, he’ll
likely drop far back and attempt a prolonged bid, which is
exactly what Everfast did to nail second at 128-1 in the GII Holy
Bull S. and second at 29-1 in the GI Preakness.
10) JOEVIA (c, Shanghai Bobby--Peace Process, by War Front)
O-Michael & Jeff Fazio. B-Ikhana Farm (KY). T-Gregory Sacco.
Sales History: $34,000 RNA Wlg ‘16 KEENOV; $50,000 Ylg ‘17
FTKJUL; $32,000 2yo ‘18 OBSAPR. Lifetime Record: SW, 5-2-2-0,
$131,600.
Last Start: 1st, Long Branch S., MTH, May 12
Equineline PPs.
Joevia figures to be the longest shot in the field and looks like
sacrificial speed pegged down at the rail. Although gunning it to
the front is not as imperative in the 1 1/2-mile Belmont as it is in
other major stakes, this $32,000 OBSAPR Shanghai Bobby colt is
coming off a wire job in the slop going 1 1/16 miles against only
three other entrants in a watered-down $95,000 stakes at
Monmouth. He attempted to make the pace but caused
dangerous crowding into the first turn of the Wood Memorial
and got DQ’d from seventh to last for that trouble.
Best of luck to all the connections!

DISTORTED HUMOR COLT FASTEST AT OBS
THURSDAY by Jessica Martini
A colt by Distorted Humor worked the fastest furlong of
Thursday’s second session of the under-tack preview ahead of
next week’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s June Sale of
2-Year-Olds in Training. Consigned by de Meric Sales, hip 254
covered the distance in :9 4/5, tying the fastest time of the week
so far.
“We were happy with the work--we were expecting him to
work really well and he did not disappoint,” said Tristan de
Meric.
The bay colt is out of the unraced Driven (Forestry) and is a
half-brother to multiple stakes-placed Glamoride (Ide). Driven is
a half-sister to multiple stakes-placed Out for a Spin (Distorted
Humor) and graded-placed Wise Action (Wise Times).
The juvenile, bred by Russell Reineman Stable, RNA’d for
$245,000 after working a quarter in :20 3/5 at the OBS March
sale.
“We’ve only had the horse for a short amount of time,” de
Meric said. “Tami Bobo sent him to us about six weeks ago. He
got some time after the sale--she took him back to her farm.
He’s been really straightforward and it’s been a pleasure to have
him.”
The five-session under-tack preview continues through Sunday
and de Meric said the results so far are in line with expectations.
“It’s going about as expected in most spots,” he said. “There
have been no big surprises either way.”
De Meric Sales has enjoyed plenty of success at the juvenile
auctions this spring. The consignment sold two seven-figure lots
at the OBS April sale, including the $1.3-million sale topper.
“We’ve been very fortunate,” de Meric said. “It’s been a great
year.”

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 12 OF 17 • THETDN.COM FRIDAY • JUNE 7, 2019
Of expectations going into next week’s last major 2-year-old
sale of the year, de Meric said, “I think there will still be
demand. I think we’ll see the same trends we’ve seen all year.
The right horses will sell well and we’ll hope there are enough
people here to buy the rest of them because there are quite a
few.”
Two horses shared the fastest quarter-mile breeze Thursday in
Ocala. Hip 388, a filly by Adios Charlie, covered the distance in
:20 4/5. Bred and consigned by Ocala Stud, the gray filly is out of
Holiday Tune (Concorde’s Tune) and is a half to stakes-placed
Angel’s Tune (Hight Cotton). Holiday Tune is a half to graded
winner R Holiday Mood (Trippi).
A filly by Shakin It Up (hip 427) matched that :20 4/5 quarter-
mile breeze time. Consigned by CM Thoroughbreds and bred in
Florida by Pedro Gonzalez, the juvenile is out of Italian Rose
(Forestry). Her second dam is multiple stakes winner Extend
(Unbridled’s Song).
Under-tack sessions begin daily at 7:30 a.m. The sale will be
held next Wednesday through Friday with bidding commencing
each day at 10 a.m.

Cambier Parc, a well-beaten fourth over good going in the GIII
Edgewood S. on the GI Kentucky Oaks undercard, powered past
her highly regarded stablemate Newspaperofrecord in deep
stretch to pull off the upset in Thursday’s GIII Wonder Again S.
Last year’s GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine was
an overwhelming 1-9 favorite looking to bounce back from a
first defeat when second in the Edgewood, but it was more or
less a repeat of that outing, with the heavy chalk completely
controlling things up front before getting run down late.
Cambier Parc was always traveling nicely while saving ground
in the compact field in third as Newspaperofrecord led through
fractions of :23.96 and :48.58. Locked and loaded on the far
turn, the Oxo Equine colorbearer was tipped out for the stretch
run and kicked home nicely to get the money.
“I'm not surprised Cambier Parc ran this well,” winning trainer
Chad Brown said. “That's why we had her in the race. She's a
much better horse on firm ground. That race at Churchill didn't
do her any justice. She has the bloodlines to do it. Her mother
was second in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf. As you saw
today, she's an up-and-comer in this division.”
Fourth as the even-money favorite after getting steadied at
the start in her debut sprinting over a muddy Aqueduct main
track Nov. 3, the bay switched to grass in style with a runaway
maiden win over the Gulfstream lawn Jan. 2 and posted her first
stakes victory with a decision in the GIII Herecomesthebride S.
Mar. 2.
As for Newspaperofrecord, Brown added,
“Newspaperofrecord was disappointing. She couldn't stay a mile
and an eighth today. I didn't see any excuse for the trip she got,
or the fractions. The only thing I would say about her is what I'd
like to see next time against a bigger field if we go on to the
Belmont Oaks. I would like to see her have someone to follow
deeper into the stretch.”
Pedigree Notes:
Cambier Parc, bred on the same cross responsible for dual-
surface GISW Mshawish, was the most expensive of 44 yearlings
sold by her sire in 2017 when bringing $1.25 million from Larry
Best’s OXO Equine at the Keeneland September Sale. The
winner’s dam, a three-time Canadian champion, was bought by
Bonne Chance Farm for $750,000 at Keeneland November in
2015 with Cambier Parc in utero. Cont. p13

Significant Form got up just in time for her first graded score in
the GIII Intercontinental S. at Belmont Thursday evening.
In no hurry early, the gray raced in mid-pack off the fence as
Fire Key clocked an opening half in :45.99 while pushed along by
Broadway Run (Prospective). Blocked in with nowhere to go in
the lane, she split horses late to deny Fire Key in the shadow of
the wire. Stella di Camelot (Ire) completed the trifecta.
Winner of the 2017 GIII Miss Grillo S., Significant Form romped
in the 2018 Memories of Silver S. and was second in that year’s
GIII Wonder Again S. Fourth in the GI Belmont Oaks Invitational
S. last summer, she checked in fifth to stablemate and MGISW
Rushing Fall (More Than Ready) in the GII Lake Placid S. at
Saratoga last August and was subsequently shelved. Returning
at Aqueduct Nov. 22, the 4-year-old ran fourth in the Winter
Memories S.
“I had so much horse, so I knew that whatever hole I could
make, I was going to get through,” said winning rider Irad Ortiz,
Jr. “I just waited there and was patient and tried to make the
right decision with her. It worked out well.”
Pedigree Notes:
Significant Form is out of the unraced Harlan’s Holiday mare
Church By the Sea, who is a half-sister to GSW & GISP Hellow
Liberty (Forest Camp) and GISP Pious Ashley (Include). Her first
foal was Grade III-winning turfer Hay Dakota and her recent
produce include the 2-year-old filly Seastone (Cairo Prince),
purchased by Stoneway Farm for $300,000 at FTKOCT. She was
barren for the 2018 season and had a Curlin filly Feb. 11 of this
year.

CATALINA CRUISER RETURNS IN TRUE
NORTHby Joe Bianca
There were few more exciting horses last summer than Hronis
Racing’s Catalina Cruiser (Union Rags), but after going four-for-
four to start his career, the chestnut went up in flames at odds-
on in the GI Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. He’ll make his much-
anticipated return and debut as 5-year-old in Friday’s GII True
North S. at Belmont.
Victorious on debut in October of 2017 at Santa Anita, the
$370,000 Keeneland September purchase repeated in an
optional claimer there last May and had his coming-out party
when romping by 6 3/4 lengths in the GII San Diego H. July 21 at
Del Mar. He added to his legend with a similarly easy score in
the GII Pat O’Brien S. Aug. 25, but faded to finish a well-beaten
sixth at 9-10 at Churchill Downs. The John Sadler trainee shows
a half-dozen works at his Arcadia base in preparation for this
comeback, capped by a half-mile spin in :47 3/5 (3/37) June 2.
Courtlandt Farms’ Strike Power (Speightstown) returns to the
big stage looking to reclaim the cachet he earned last winter at
Gulfstream. An eight-length debut graduate to earn ‘TDN Rising
Star’ honors in December of 2017, he scored in the GIII Swale S.
next out and was a good second stretching out in the
GII Fountain of Youth S. The wheels fell off after that though, as
he could manage no better than fourth in his next four outings
and was beaten by double-digit lengths each time.
Laid up for nearly eight months and dropped into optional
claiming company when resurfacing Apr. 25 at Gulfstream, the
homebred looked much like his old self, going wire to wire in a
five-length score that produced a 101 Beyer, easily Strike
Power’s best output since the 102 he earned in his unveiling.
Whitmore (Pleasantly Perfect) looks to avenge a tough beat
from last year’s True North as the most accomplished runner in
the group. Missing by a neck to the brilliant MGISW Imperial
Hint (Imperialism) in the 2018 renewal, the gelding was runner-
up by the same margin in the GII Belmont Sprint Championship
before picking up his first Grade I success in the Forego S.
Aug. 25 at Saratoga. Completing the exacta behind champion
Roy H (More Than Ready) in the GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint, he
debuted as a 6-year-old with a conquest of the Hot Springs S.
before running into the streaking buzzsaw Mitole (Eskendereya)
when second in the GIII Count Fleet Sprint H. and fifth in the
GI Churchill Downs S. last out.
BEAUGAY TOP TWO REMATCH IN NEW
YORKby Joe Bianca
The first two finishers in the May 11 GIII Beaugay S. at
Belmont, led by the extremely promising winner Homerique
(Exchange Rate), will re-engage and stretch out to 1 1/4 miles in
Friday’s GII New York S. at Big Sandy.
An impressive debut winner at Chantilly last spring, Peter
Brant’s Homerique was third, beaten just a neck, two starts later
in the G1 Prix de Diane Longines. Annexing the G3 Prix de
Psyche next out, she was seventh against males in the G1 Prix du
Moulin de Longchamp before earning a career high when third
in the G1 Prix de l’Opera Longines Oct. 7 at ParisLongchamp.
Transferred to the Chad Brown barn after that, she made an
auspicious North American debut when closing into a slow pace
to capture the Beaugay, circling the field and running her final
five-sixteenths in an absurd :27.40 to get up. The gray tuned up
for this stretchout with a five-furlong breeze over the local turf
in 1:01 2/5 (7/10) June 1 (video). Cont. p15

Arklow | Reed Palmer
Second choice on the morning line is Homerique’s stablemate
Competitionofideas (Speightstown). Owned by Klaravich
Stables, the $325,000 Keeneland September graduate rallied
from last to first to take the GI American Oaks going this trip
Dec. 29 at Santa Anita. She also ran a fast late fraction (:27.66)
to grab the runner-up spot in the Beaugay, but enjoyed a
ground-saving ride unlike her barnmate that day.
The most likely upsetter of the Brown train appears to be
Stronach Stables’ Holy Helena (Ghostzapper). The 2017 Queen’s
Plate S. heroine, she picked up victories in the GIII The Very One
S. and GII Sheepshead Bay S. last season and was fifth in this
event. Winless in six starts heading into this year’s The Very
One, she rallied determinedly to defend her title by a head.
ARKLOW TAKES ON EUROPEAN TRIO IN
BELMONT GOLD CUPby Molly Rollins
The multiple graded-stakes winning Arklow (Arch) looks to be
America’s best hope in claiming Friday’s two-mile GII Belmont
Gold Cup over a trio of European invaders.
Since the Brad Cox pupil broke his maiden over the turf course
as a 3-year-old in April 2017, he has strung together eight in-
the-money finishes in his last 14 starts, including victories in the
2017 GII American Turf S. and the GIII Kentucky Turf Cup Sept. 8.
Owned by Donegal Racing, Joseph Bulger and Peter Coneway,
Arklow concluded his 4-year-old campaign with an encouraging
fourth to the brilliant filly Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in the
Nov. 3 GI Breeders Cup Turf. Cont. p16

In the bay’s first try of 2019, he unseated his rider at the start
of a Apr. 5 Keeneland optional claimer before turning in a career
best performance in the
May 11 GI Man ‘O’ War S. Arklow posted the highest Beyer
Speed Figure of his career, earning a 105, when just failing to
catch Channel Maker (English Channel) by a neck at the wire
after unleashing a powerful stretch run.
"On paper, we think he's as good as the best there is in the
country, but the mile and quarter is a little shorter than he
would like so we decided to give the Belmont Gold Cup a whirl,"
Donegal Racing's Jerry Crawford told the NYRA notes team.
"There's a little fear of the unknown in going this long but he's
showing signs of being able to get the two miles and we know
that he likes the turf at Belmont.”
Leading the European contingent is Luke Comer’s Raa Atoll
(GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). Previously trained by John Gosden, the
4-year-old was transferred into Comer’s barn and triumphed off
a 10-month layoff in the May 12 G2 Comer Group International
Oleander Rennen S. at Hoppergarten (Ger). The race was
contested over the same grueling two-mile distance of the Gold
Cup.
Sheikh Mohammed’s Mootasadir (GB) (Dansili {GB}) boasts a
six-for-nine lifetime record, including a win in the Sept. 28 G3
Recruit Island Diamond S. over the Dundalk (Ire) synthetic. Hugo
Palmer conditions the colt, who captured his first two starts of
this year routing over synthetic surfaces before failing to
threaten when sixth in the May 17 G2 Matchbook Yorkshire Cup
at York (GB).
The Alessandro Botti-trained Amade (Ire) (Casamento {Ire})
has twice proven victorious over the two-mile distance this year,
albeit on a synthetic surface, including a Mar. 7 allowance score
at Chelmsford two starts back.
MCINGVALE TO OFFER ‘RUNHAPPY BONUS’
AT SARATOGA IN 2020 Jim McIngvale, who owned champion Runhappy (Super Saver)
during his racing career, is offering a $100,000 bonus paid to the
connections of any of Runhappy’s offspring who win an
unrestricted maiden race at Saratoga in 2020, when he will be
represented by his first crop of 2-year-olds. McIngvale told TDN
that a similar bonus is likely to soon be announced at Del Mar,
saying that it’s just a matter of working out some final details.
“Team Runhappy is delighted to award a $100,000 bonus to
add even more excitement to the great atmosphere at the
nation's oldest sporting venue,” McIngvale said. “The bonus is
designed to support the people who are key to horse racing--the
breeders, owners and trainers. They are the ones who bring the
game to life.”
Runhappy currently stands for $25,000 at Claiborne Farm and
is the title sponsor of Saturday’s GI Metropolitan H. at Belmont.

MARYANORGINGER OFF THE CANVAS TO
BREAK MAIDEN IN ASTORIA
Maryanorginger (Strong Mandate) looked to be in deep waterafter finding early trouble her rail draw in Thursday’s Astoria S.,but she showed ample determination and talent to find a way towin, garnering her diploma, first black-type tally and the ‘TDNRising Star’ distinction all at once. Backed at 3-1 with some buzz behind her as the lone firsttimer in this historic event, she stutter-stepped at the start, andfound further trouble soon after that to get shuffled back tosecond last. The bay came alive heading for home while scrapingpaint, and tipped out for clear sailing into a :45.53 half. Perhapsidling slightly once she hit the front, she “skipped” on from thereto deny race favorite Perfect Alibi (Sky Mesa)--who seemed tobe checking out of it on the turn--by about 3/4 of a length in1:03.94.
"The first time out it's really not the way you want to start
against winners, but she's really been professional,” said trainer
Jeremiah Englehart of the graduate of the late J.J. Crupi’s New
Castle Farm. “Other than a little rear up in the paddock, she's
been really good and really smart. And I thought Jorge [Vargas,
Jr.] did a good job. He let her settle and didn't get nervous.”
Of the decision to debut in this tough spot, the trainer said, "I
was actually targeting a turf race, but everyone at the barn was
telling me do dirt. And [owner] Al [Gold] likes to run his horses
the first time on dirt. And I said, 'all right.'... [After her last
workout I said] ''Why don't we take a shot at the Astoria? It'll be
a tough field, but she's nice. We took a shot and it paid off."
Maryanorginger is the fourth black-type winner for her young
sire Strong Mandate (Tiznow) and is out of a winning half-sister
to GII Del Mar Futurity winner Icecoldbeeratreds (In Excess {Ire})
and his MSW full-sister Controlled, the dam of Sovereign Award
winner and MGSW Bear Now (Tiznow) and SW & GSP Controlled
Meeting (General Meeting). Timetobegone is the dam of a
yearling filly by Temple City and a filly foal by Connect (Curlin).

FRIDAY’S INSIGHTS: CHAD BROWN DUO
LOOKS TOUGH IN FIRST AT BELMONTSponsored by Alex Nichols Agency
1st-BEL, MSW, $90k, 3yo/up, 7f, 12:50 p.m. ET
Chad Brown boasts two intriguing prospects in Friday’s
Belmont opener. Gainesway bred and owns, in partnership with
Peter Brant, first-time starter Per Capita (Tapit). The chestnut
colt is out of the Grade III-winning mare Successful Outlook
(Orientate) and is a half-brother to Grade I winner and ‘TDN
Rising Star’ Sweet Lulu (Mr. Greeley) and a full-brother to
multiple graded stakes winner Anchor Down and millionaire Iron
First.
Ahead of Plan (Big Drama), the even-money chalk on David
Aragona’s morning line, returns off a 10-month layoff that last
saw the Klavarich Stables colorbearer lose a neck decision after
setting all the pace in his Aug. 18 Saratoga debut. He earned a
strong 88 Beyer Speed Figure for that outing and was flattered
when the third and fourth-place finishers came back to score.
The $475,000 OBS April purchase (:10 flat) is a son of the
stakes-winning mare Daisy Dukes (Ghazi) and a half-brother to
Japanese stakes winner Surplus Singer (Songandaprayer).
Christophe Clement trainee Just for One Day (Will Take
Charge) hammered for $210,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Sale in
2017 after selling for $420,000 in utero at the previous year’s
Keeneland January sale to current co-owner Highland Yard. The
son of MSW Mother Ruth (Speightstown) is a half-brother to last
year’s GIII Rancho Bernardo H. winner Yuvetsi (Bodemeister).

ROWAYTON (c, 3, Into Mischief--Rosemonde, by Indian
Charlie) capped a big day for owner Larry Best’s OXO Equine,
running down a horse conditioned by the same trainer--Chad
Brown--who provided Best with a score in the GIII Wonder Again
S. earlier on the card via pricey Cambier Parc (Medaglia d’Oro).
A popular debut winner at Del Mar last July, Rowayton finished
second in the GI Del Mar Futurity and third in the GI American
Pharoah S. in September before hitting the bench. He resurfaced
to be fifth at 7-10 after a tough trip at Oaklawn Apr. 13, and was
installed the 14-5 second choice behind Brown pupil Payne
(Paynter). Hard ridden for the early lead, Rowayton was
relegated to second and steadily dropped back while saving all
the ground but somewhat bottled up heading for home.
Payne, meanwhile, uncorked a head-turning, sweeping rally to
strike the front in upper stretch. Rowayton soon found daylight
at the rail, however, and made a nifty move to inhale the leader
and prevail by 1 1/4 lengths. The winner’s dam is a half to
Canadian champion Miss Mischief (Into Mischief). Rowayton’s 2-
year-old full-sister was a $375,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga
yearling and RNA’d for $400,000 at this year’s OBS March Sale.
Rosemonde produced a Frosted colt last term and was bred
back to that stallion. Sales history: $320,000 Ylg '17 FTSAUG.

closed well to finish an encouraging third in his prior start in a

who completed the trifecta in last year’s Nov. 3 GI Breeders’ Cup

was content to sit behind the pace in fourth along the rail as the
early leader opened up 11-lengths on the field after a half-mile
in :47.08. Pillar Mountain found himself with nowhere to go
turning for home, but was able to split horses in deep stretch,

winning the photo by a nose in a tight finish. The winner hails

Thewinner’s unraced dam was a $240,000 buyback as a 2-year-oldat the 2012 Fasig-Tipton November sale, and her own damArch’s Gal Edith (Arch) RNA’d for $950,000 at the same salesome six months after I’ll Have Another’s Classic exploits. CATCH A BID (f, 3, Real Solution--Elusive Champagne, by
Elusive Quality) was seen as the lesser of the two Chad Brown
entries in this maiden contest but at 7-2, the bargain $30,000
FTKOCT purchase, from her sire’s second crop, rallied home a
winner in her first lifetime start. The bay filly broke evenly and
ran mid-pack as the early leader Miss You Blues (Big Drama) set
swift fractions of 22.54 and 46.64. Jockey Javier Castellano
roused Catch A Bid around the turn after three-quarters ran in
1:10.94, she launched a 4-wide move into the stretch, barreling
down the lane to hit the wire 4 1/2 lengths in front of her stable
mate Queen Medb (Ire) (Kodiac {Ire}).
She is a half-sister to an unamed yearling colt by Kitten’s Joy

KID RUSSELL (g, 2, Gone Astray--Insert Name Here, by Honour
and Glory) capped a solid worktab with a strong half-mile
breeze from the gate in :47 flat May 31, but was let go at debut
odds of 12-1. Showing good speed from between runners early,
Kid Russell raced inside on the turn, pushed away from the
fence and three wide into the lane, lugged in while taking
command about a furlong from home and held sway by a head
as Hombrazo (Macho Uno) took a dive at him late. Lifetime

In this continuing series, Alan Carasso takes a look ahead at
US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming
weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit,
with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring.
Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at
Hanshin and Tokyo Racecourses:
Saturday, June 8, 2019
7th-TOK, ¥9,550,000 ($88k), Maiden, 3yo, 1400m
LAS VEGAS TESORO (c, 3, Tiznow--Garden District, by Dixie
Union), a $450K purchase out of the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga
sale, did not find the grass to his liking two starts back, but has
run well on the dirt, including a strong third over this track and
distance May 26 (video, gate 8). His Grade III-winning dam is a
daughter of GSP Brisquette (Unbridled’s Song), who is also
responsible for GSW & MGISP Medal Count (Dynaformer), third
in the 2014 GI Belmont S. and recently represented by his first
winner. B-Lochlow Farm (KY)
Sunday, June 9, 2019
3rd-HSN, ¥9,550,000 ($88k), Maiden, 3yo, 1800m
NOIVA (f, 3, Temple City--Malibu Pier, by Malibu Moon) has
finished second or third in four of five starts on the main track,
most recently rounding out the triple in two-turn races at Kyoto
in February and at Kokura in March. A $475K Keeneland
September graduate, the dark bay was the priciest of her sire’s
54 yearlings to sell in 2017 and her MGSW & GISP dam has
already produced SW & GISP Coasted (Tizway) and MGSP
Malibu Stacy (Tizway). Top jockey Mirco Demuro is engaged.
B-Spendthrift Farm LLC (KY)
7th-TOK, ¥14,250,000 ($132k), Allowance, 3yo, 2100m
BERGEN HARBOR (c, 3, Noble Mission {GB}--Two Harbors, by
Pulpit) struggled in a pair of turf tries to kick off his career, but
the $90K Fasig-Tipton Turf Showcase grad turned it around in no
uncertain terms with a slow-starting, late-running maiden
success over course and trip May 12 (video, gate 8). The blaze-
faced chestnut is out of an unplaced daughter of MGSW Santa
Catalina (Cure the Blues), dam of GISW Golden Missile (A.P.
Indy). B-Tim Thornton (KY)
