How far would you run for a doughnut?

By: Usama Ahmad 6D

How many calories in a doughnut?

A donut has typically about 180 – 360 calories in it. A Cocoa Glazed Donut (from Dunkin’ Donuts) has 240 calories. I will use this donut as my example.

The formula

The formula to figure out how much you have to run to burn the calories of a donut is …

calories = kilometers ⨉ weight (kg) 1.036⨉

Example

So, if a person weighs 100 kg, then the formula would be … calories = 5 100 1.036⨉ ⨉ = 500 1.036⨉ = 518518 is WAY too big, so let’s try something else. calories = 2.5 100 1.036⨉ ⨉ = 250 1.036⨉ = 259259 is close enough to 240, so a person who weighs 100 kg

would have to run 2.5 km to burn off the calories of a donut.

Another example

So, say a person weighs 53.2 kg wants to know how many calories he would burn by running 1 km. The formula would be …

calories = 1 53.2 1.036⨉ ⨉ = 53.2 1.036⨉ = 55.12So, he would burn 55.12 calories by running 1 km.

And another one …

The same person wants to know how many km he would need to burn the calories of a donut. The formula would be …

calories = 5 53.2 1.036⨉ ⨉ = 266 1.036⨉ = 275.6So 5 is too big … let’s try 4.5! calories = 4.5 53.2 1.036⨉ ⨉ = 239.4 1.036⨉ = 248.02So, 4.5 km is just the right distance.

How can math with decimals help me to make good health choices?

It can help you because now you know how much you would need to run to burn a certain amount of calories and how to figure out how healthy something is by examining the amount of calories it contains.

Which Learner Profile can math with decimals help me to improve?

It would help me with being more:• Knowledgeable, because now I know more
