Recyclemania!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Page 7: How Green Is The Green Terror[1]

What is Recyclemania?

• Recyclemania is a 10-week competition between both colleges and universities to see who can recycle the most.

• The competition ranks schools based on how much they recycle per capita, the total amount in general, the least amount of waste produced, and also the highest recycling rate.

• The competition is meant to help increase awareness about recycling and also promote effective recycling methods.

Page 8: How Green Is The Green Terror[1]

Rules

• Schools can either compete in an official Competition Division, or a less formal Benchmark division.

• Schools can either have the entire campus involved or only sections (i.e. dorms) participate.

• The Benchmark Division, being less formal, is open to any higher education institution.

• The competition was started in 2001 between Miami University(Oh) and Ohio University. Since then, many more schools and many more tons of waste have been recycled.

Page 11: How Green Is The Green Terror[1]

What are we doing to help?

• According to the McDaniel website, the school participated in the Per Capita Classic, which is the original competition that ranks schools based on amount of waste recycled per person.

• The school recycled 26,430 pounds of bottles, cans, paper, and corrugated cardboard.

• The amount of waste comes per capita comes down to about 14.13 pounds per person, ranking McDaniel College 36th out of 59 schools competing.

Page 12: How Green Is The Green Terror[1]

But more can be done…

• While we are a small school and 14.13 pounds per person is pretty good, that number could be higher.

• According to the website as well, McDaniel is currently not registered to compete for the 2009 Recyclemania, this is a good way to get the word out and increase our recycling year in and year out.

How Environmentally Friendly is your living space!

Page 15: How Green Is The Green Terror[1]

• Many students spend a lot of time in their dorm or in a friends dorm!• Once you enter the dorm, do you think about how clean the space is your about to spend the next six months in?• Here are some questions I pose that you may want to get answered?

• Why aren’t the dormitory rooms cleaned by the cleaning staff?• What types of pesticides, if any are used to prevent pests?

When? Are they used universally?

Page 16: How Green Is The Green Terror[1]

• College dormitory are often ridden with bed bugs and other pests like: rodents, lice and coachroaches, mites, and mold.•Among these McDaniel has had a problem with 3 out of 4 of these pests including: bed bugs, mice, and coachroaches.•Dorms like Whitford have had problems with bedbugs and cochroaches, McDaniel Hall is contaminated with mice and other latent problems.•Bed Bugs and mites make home inside your mattresses and rugs!• These pesky little pests can and do make for an uncomfortable living situation.

Page 17: How Green Is The Green Terror[1]

• IT IS THE STUDENTS RESPONSIBILITY TO SANITIZE BEDS BEFORE USING THEM…DO YOU?• BED BUGS CAN ONLY BE ELIMINATED OR REDUCED THROUGH THE USE OF A GENERAL PURPOSE SPRAY OR INSECTICIDE DUST!

DID YOU KNOW???

McDaniel does not take preventative measures for eliminating these pests.

Extermination is only implemented upon request, if there is a imminent problem!

Page 18: How Green Is The Green Terror[1]

If you look at the floors there are huge stains on dorm rugs. These unknown spots are breeding grounds for: mites, dander, and other lung irritants. They can also attract unwanted critters such as cochroaches and mice!

“The Floors in the dormitory are not cleaned on a regular bases”

-cleaning staff But are they cleaned at all??? Just look for yourself Many Students have an influx of allergic reactions, sinuses,

and asthma due to infestation of our dorm rooms with these pests!

Page 19: How Green Is The Green Terror[1]

To ensure that your not the next blood meal of a mite or a bed bugs. There are several Steps that you can take:

Wash blankets and sheets in very hot water every two weeks. Keep your thermostat at room temp. or below 70 degrees.,

certain bugs thrive in warm conditions. Sunlight as an alternative light source kills dust mites, as well!! Vacuum your carpet: its rids it of dust and dirt that maybe

hiding under your carpet! Request Carpet cleaner from the maintenance staff! This too can help rid the carpet of dander, and improve the

quality of air in your dorm! Store food properly! For instance dry foods that students

typically leave out can be stored in plastic containers! This may seem simple: But Clean your room weekly: lysol spray,

and pledge can do wonders for your breathing!

Page 20: How Green Is The Green Terror[1]

Here we see a toilet seat that is

covered with mold, and moss! Mold- produces sold spores that

circulate in the air, reducing air quality

This moist toilet pole is a prime breeding ground for mold, and it continues to grow and thrive by whatever means necessary.

Mold can cause: stuffy nose, eye irritation, wheezing, and or skin irritation.

•Mildew is also a huge problem in the bathrooms.•There are no EPA regulations for indoor mold, mold spores, or airborne mold contaminants. So there is no regulation for McDaniel to follow.• These contaminants: mildew and mold can be caused by lots of moisture, plumbing leaks and condensation!

Page 21: How Green Is The Green Terror[1]

• Vent showers and other high moisture areas to outside!• Indoor humility levels should be kept btwn 30-60%, with the use of adequate ventilation.•Proper insulation can prevent condensation on indoor materials!• Use lysol and other chlorox derivatives when using the bathroom.•Always wear shoes!!! I don’t think u want this on your feet!

We Have the Resources why aren’t We We Have the Resources why aren’t We using Them!using Them!

• The Science building have ventilation systems that circulate every seven seconds.•These vents suck moisture out of the air, and filtrates out other impurites, to ensure that we are not breathing in contaminated air.•Why are these ventilation systems not used in the dormitories?• Without students we have no institutions, so shouldn’t our health be priority on the schools agenda?
