how keyless ignitions are replacing traditional cut key blades
TRANSCRIPT
“Keyless ignition system is the latest buzz in the automobile
industry and has made their place in almost all latest vehicle
models. It seems that the time has come to say goodbye to the
customary car key blades.
The following blog is about keyless ignition systems and the
reason of their rising popularity. “
INTRODUCTION
Last year General Motors told the dealers to “replace the keys on 2014 and
2015 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models, as well as several other
large vehicles”. This statement itself was an indication of the change from
traditional cut key blades to keyless ignitions.
As per the statistics of the research conducted by an automotive firm
Edmunds.com, 72 percent of the cars and trucks that were sold in the U.S.
during the year 2014 were already equipped with push-button starter
which was either a standard in-built feature or as an alternative option.
Why are Keyless ignition systems gaining popularity?
The clear-cut reason is the ease and convenience associated with its usage.
One doesn’t have to carry the car keys and also protect it from getting
stolen or lost. The new system has a transmitter fob which can be used to
unlock the car from a remote distance and also start the engine.
So every time you have to step out for a drive, you can just use the
transmitter fob to start the engine from your home to warm up your car on
a freezing day without stepping out in extreme cold.
Keyless ignitions are anti-theft
Keyless ignitions serve as anti-theft because the fob is programmed to your
car and in case of an invalid fob transmission, security alarms will be
triggered. Some of the more advanced versions of these keyless ignition
systems can even disable the ignition system during invalid transmission
which makes it impossible to steal the car and drive away.
Flipside of keyless ignition systems
The safety and security of keyless ignition system is still a concern as hackers
are able to find technologies to re-program the keyless fobs and enter into
the car. This is the case with luxury cars.
This has become a big issue for industry as the vehicles are being stolen by
reprogramming the transmitter fobs. Moreover, losing the fob can prove to
be highly expensive. Like all other electronic stuff, the fob can even start to
malfunction at the most unexpected times.
There are few drawbacks associated with keyless ignition systems but if you
have a genuine and trusted auto locksmith, your car’s safety is in safe
hands.
