How Long Should
Your Podcast
Be?
As as a radio show host, I oftentimes get asked the question, “How long
should my podcast be?” My answer?...
“As long as it needs to be.”
Your podcast should be shorter than you think it needs to be.
Radio shows measure TSL – in other words, “time spent listening.”
This TSL measurement has
steadfastly declined since the 90s, and
continues to year by year.
Therefore, the competition for
time continuously grows between
your podcast and everything else.
Think about what people do as they
listen to your podcast – they may
be driving, cleaning, or eating,
for instance. In other words,
they’re not usually paying full attention.
As a radio show host, I have never heard a podcast over 30 minutes that
couldn’t be made shorter.
When you record a podcast and edit it afterward, you are then able to make an average podcast more
powerful by cutting it down to both get rid of the excess and focus more so on getting to the point.
In most cases, a half hour is more than enough time to expect people to pay attention. However, if you really do have a
solid half hour/hour of
material, break down your
podcast into several episodes.
Shorter is better! The longer people listen, the more spectacular it needs to
be!
