What is the r isk of acute toxicity from caffeine by drinking coffee?

• tox concept: LD50 = amount of ingested substance that kills 50% of the population; LD = lethal dose

• assume LD50 for caffeine = 200 mg/kg bodyweight1• for a 70 kg adult, LD50 = 14 g• Average cup of coffee / espresso shot has 75 - 150 mg caffeine• How many cups of coffee need to be ingested within 24 hours to

reach the lethal does of caffeine: 90-180 cups!• Risk of death from acute caffeine poisoning by drinking
