What are the parts of a Flip Lock? Before getting started, let’s familiarize ourselves with the parts of this lock. A ip lock has 4 parts plus screws. The ip lock mounts to the base or body of your project with the prongs extending through a washer that hides between the lining and the exterior fabric. The eyelet front goes on the front of the ap and is attached to the eyelet backwith screws. When in use, the ip lock extends through the eyelet and ips down to close. Voila! A nicely secured bag.

Use template to mark location of the 2-part eyelet.

BEFORE APPLYING THE LOCK: Read through this tutorial and your pattern instructionsbefore starting so you can plan the best order for installing your lock. Cut out your project, choosing the position of the lock in advance. Projects vary and so may the construction order. Because the washer and prongs of the flip lock need to be hidden beween the outer fabricand the lining, we give a general sewing order. For simplicity we have drawn the project as a bag. Follow the instructions for your project and use the lock instructions at the appropriate time.

Since a flip lock gets flipped and pulled when in use, we call for heavy iron-on interfacing as well as suggesting plastic canvas for additional reinforcement.

1.Your pattern instructions probably call for an interfaced flap. Add a second layer of inter-faing to the flap where the eyelet will attach. Cut the eyelet interfacing about 3” wide x 1-1/2” high. Place it glue side down on the wrong side of the fabric, centered over the intended eyelet position. If you have inter-faced the entire flap, fuse this piece on top of the original interfacing, following package directions.

Complete the flap following patterndirections.

NOTE:For best results the flap should beno thicker than 1/8” to fit properly betweenfront and back of 2-part eyelet.

Prepare the flap

Position the eyelet front on the flap to choosethe desired position. Carefully measure toensure placement is even and straight. Copyand cut out the template on Page 2. Positionthe template over the measured location. Usea marking pencil to draw around the templateshape.

Use sharp tiny scissors to carefully cut alonginside lines of the marked template. It is better to have the opening slightly smaller than needed than too large. You can snip bits away to enlarge if needed. A snug fit is best. Seal edges of all layers of fabric with Fray Check® to prevent raveling.

TIP:Place a cloth under the lock whenremoving and applying screws to preventlosing these extremely small parts.

Use the flip lock to mark its position. Insert the flip lock into the 2-part eyelet. Place the flap in position over the bag as it will be when the bag is closed. Holding the lock in place, carefully press the prongs into the base fabric until they leave an indentation. Raise the flap and use a marking pencil to mark each inden-tation. Remove the lock.

Center the eyelet back over the eyelet front, lining up screw holes. Use a tiny Phillips Head screwdriver to attach the screws. Tighten the screws to secure.

Mark indentationson base of project.

TIP:The flip lock can be attached earlier inthe process. However, once attached, it cannot bemoved, and you may later wish you had positioned it differently. We suggest the above constructionorder. However, if you decide to attach the flip lockafter partial construction to make hiding the washereasier, check and double check the fit, before cutting the fabric. Attach the flip lock and finish the project.

Apply Flip Lock

Place the eyelet front so it is bottom side up on your work surface. Set the flap right side down over the eyelet front so the raised section extends up through the opening.

TIP:Place the eyelet on a fabriccovered surface while working toprevent scratching.

Add a small square of iron-on interfacing to the wrong side of the marked lock position. If possible, leave the lining open on the section where the turn lock will be attached. This will allow you to hide the washer between the lining and the outer fabric.

Double check the intended position of the flip lock. Once applied, it cannot be moved. Use a ruler to measure and mark placement and make sure the marks are evenly positioned. If not, repeat Step 8. Use sharp tiny scissors to snip the two marks for the prongs. Use Fray Check® on the slits. Be sure to only cut through outer fabric.

TIP:Plan position of flip lock carefully. Once holes are snipped you cannot changethe position of the lock.

NOTE:Holes are cut through all layers exceptthe lining. If possible, leave lining in tactto conceal the prongs. When washer isattached, hand stitch the lining closed.

OPTIONAL PLASTIC CANVAS

13.

OPTIONAL PLASTICCANVAS:For extra strength add a layer of plastic canvas between the interfacing and the washer. Cut the plastic canvas slightly smaller than the interfacing. Position it over the prongs, cutting the canvas where prongs touch the canvas. Attach the washer and fold down the prongs as in Step 12.

Complete the project. Pin the lining where it was left open and stitch closed.

Push the prongs of the flip lock through the slits from right to wrong side. If you are using the optional plastic canvas, position it now. Turn the fabric right side down so prongs extend upward. Place the washer over the prongs.

Use pliers or your fingers to press the prongs toward the center of the washer until they are flat.
