An Always-On Technology Infrastructure for Safe and Secure SchoolsProviding an effective teaching and learning environment is the primary goal of all educational institutions. Traditionally, administrators concentrated on providing faculty with the tools to properly deliver the curriculum and structuring the learning process to sufficiently engage students. But, violent incidents over the past decade along with government regulations have put pressure on administrators to focus on the physical security and safety of staff, faculty, and students.

Schools, colleges, and universities must have emergency response plans that enable administrators, safety personnel, and first responders to work together seamlessly. They must also have solutions that enable awareness, response coordination, and campus-wide notifications.

ALE Safe Campus solutions leverage mobility and the Internet of Things (IoT) to evolve connectivity in the education sector and enable secure, reliable communication between faculty, students, and facilities. Schools will enhance existing investments to create an end-to-end, always-on communications infrastructure that supports mass communication during lockdown procedures, emergency preparedness, and integrates with building control systems, such as overhead paging, duress alarms, and cameras, for enhanced awareness and response.

In this ebook, educational institution leaders share their successful implementations of comprehensive technology infrastructure that prioritizes safety and security.

Read on for their stories.

Unreliable telephony service poses an immediate threat to student and staff safety. The DIS team experienced chronic issues that hindered their ability to make critical telephone calls - offline handsets, the need for unexpected manual telephony server reboots, and the requirement to dial ‘9’ before accessing an external telephone line.

“Reliabilty of communication is critical in a school environment and our existing infrastructure was failing us. The Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise solution gives us the dependability and scalabilty we need, while delivering great features like voicemail to email and PIMphony call management.”

Rapid school expansion exposed security risks that could only be addressed by an improved campus-wide communications solution. Seventeen standalone telephony systems, the inability to make telephone calls to other campus buildings, and the need for in-classroom telephones led Elkhorn Public Schools to Alcatel-Lucent’s centralized telephony system.

“After presentations by multiple vendors, Elkhorn Public Schools chose to partner with Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise. As the District moved to a VoIP system, we felt that they provided the most cost-effective solution. Our partnership with Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise has been excellent. We are still discovering all the things this system can provide to meet our needs as we continually add new buildings”

Communication with first responders during an emergency is critical to maintain the physical security of students, faculty, and staff. The Great Neck system lacked the ability to immediately notify IT, administrators, security personnel, and nurses when a 911 call was made. The team required direct access to 911 services, including immediate accountability, tracking, and reliable notifications.

“We like that we can choose various notification types for each internal responder. We can organize the solution by building location. We also like that first responders can listen to 911 calls in real-time. The system also provides us with immediate accountability, tracking, and notification. I think the ENS solution is so important that it should be included in every VoIP phone system.”

Established Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) that manage and answer 911 calls have been established across the nation. However, PSAPs are at various stages of technological advancement and 911 services vary from one jurisdiction to another. Rockville Centre UFSD faced challenges as several campus buildings were not able to make a local call to the county 911 PSAP. In order to quickly respond in emergency situations, district leaders needed a way to ensure internal first responders and Nassau County emergency personnel were immediately notified when a 911 call was made from any campus building. And, for comprehensive campus safety, the Rockville Centre team wanted to allow local police access to campus CCTV feeds, flexible notification types for internal responders, and a full record of all 911 calls for historical reporting.

“We have two PSAPs for our district. The solution allows our community police force to be aware of emergency calls that go to the other PSAP, saving up to seven minutes. Do you know how precious time is during an emergency?”
