How to create a blog on WordPress

In this document we describe how to set up and create a WordPress Blog.

Createablog!

1. Go to https://wordpress.com/

On the middle bottom of the page is the option to ‘Start a Blog’. Click on this.

2. The next page is to confirm that a blog is what you are wanting to create. Click on the blue ‘Get Started’ button.

3. Select the topic that best represents what you will be writing about on your blog. If you are creating a blog as part of teaching and learning or intend to write about your time at the University, then select ‘Education & Organizations’.

4. Select what you would like your homepage to look like. Most people of with the first option which is ‘A list of my latest posts’.

5. WordPress will now offer you a selection of themes. Themes are the presentation and layout of your blog. Select one of the themes but don’t worry if you decide you don’t like it as you can change it at any time.

6. Enter the domain name for your blog. This is often the name of your blog and is what people type into their browser to visit your site.

7. When you type in your domain name, WordPress will check to see if that name is available. If not it will offer suggestions around a similar name type. WordPress will also display both free and ‘upgrade’ options for domain names similar to what you type. We recommend choosing a free domain name.

8. Once you have selected a domain name WordPress will then ask you to select a subscription plan. Unless you are providing a business or service you will not need a paid plan. We recommend using the Free plan.

9. Create your account by providing an email address, your username (often used as the name of your domain but you can change this to your own name or anything you like), and a password.

10. Congratulations! You now have a WordPress blog. WordPress will guide you through setting up your blog and writing your first blog post.
