Background information
I studied Biochemical Engineering at UCL. It equipped
me with the skills to reverse engineer a process and
apply this knowledge to Body Transformations today.
Whilst at UCL I was unhealthy, depressed and unfit due
to poor eating habits and lifestyle choices, but soon
realised I needed to change. But how do you get out of
such a predicament?
Firstly, most people get depressed due to a lack of
control. It may be a lack of control concerning a financial
or familial situation but ultimately it gets the better of
you.
But recovery often comes from the realisation we can’t
always control the things around us, but there is one
thing we do have control over and that’s our own mind
and body.
Your mind and body are the only things you truly own,
because it can’t be taken away from you. Your house,
car and possessions can be taken, but your mind and
body can’t.
The Ancient Greeks believed if you changed the body
you can also change the mind. That’s when I realised I
needed to change.
After seeing a TV infomercial I decided to undertake the
challenge of the 12-week Body for life competition.
Though initially a sceptic of previous claims from the
winners, I decided that if one participant was true and
managed to transform themselves, then I too could do
the same.
My 12 week before and after
3 weeks prior to the transformation start date, I used my
engineering skills to build a system, process and
environment that was necessary for success.
Deep focus on mindset and connecting with my body
allowed me to succeed.

The prize was presented by Cindy Crawford
The winning feeling was incredible and I wanted others
to feel the same way. So I set about learning how to
become and expert at body transformations. Following
the competition I became certified with YMCA and
NASM and started working at Fitness First Bloomsbury.
From 2005-2008 I was charging £30 per hour at Fitness
First, with little direction or business acumen. I wanted to
transform all my clients but had minimal success
because I didn’t understand mindset. You see the best
fitness programmes, nutrition plans, workouts and
advice are all available online. But what many don’t
have is the correct mindset that allows them to change
habits and move forwards.
You can be one of the best trainers around if you can
understand and utilise the skill of mindset. But Fitness
First had a wage cap at £40 per hour so I decided to
move to another gym in order to make more money.

Moving to Gymbox in 2008 proved to be a very difficult
decision. Not only did 20 new Personal Trainers start at
the brand new facility but within a month, the biggest
recession to hit the world since the 1930’s commenced
and this effected all PT’s and clients alike. People were
being made redundant and the luxury of Personal
Training was no longer a viable option. This leads to the
question. Is your training business recession proof?
Perception is everything, and it only takes 7 seconds for
someone to make their mind up. If you can’t create the
right perception to your audience you will really struggle.
Despite the difficult environment, I still increased fees
and remained fully booked. I thought I was successful.

But ask yourself the following questions. What does
success mean to you, is it working from 5am in the
morning till 10pm at night? Who do you compare
yourself too? Who do you associate with, positive or
negative people?
It was then; I was introduced to a client via a
Businessman that liked my work. I charged the client
£60 per hour for 3 sessions a week but unbeknownst to
me, the businessman that handed me the client was
overseeing the transformation for 6k. This simply blew
me away. I had to find out what this man was doing so
that I could earn as much without having to do so much
work.
In order to take my own business to the next level during
this difficult time, I studied business, mindset,
persuasion and sales to improve.
Utilise the growth mindset and willingness to learn to
push you in the right direction. Without the correct
strategies and procedures it will be extremely difficult to
get to the next level because you simply won’t know how
to do it.
It’s really important to seek experts, mentors and
coaches to improve you. People pay Trainers for
coaching, so why don’t you have one?
A great system and process for transformations will
make you truly invaluable to your clients. Knowledge of
your brand experience, key strategies and processes
will allow you to change any fee because clients will pay
for their wants, dreams and empowerment. With the
correct strategies and a renewed mindset, it can all be
achieved.
Mindset is one of the most useful skills you can acquire
as a Coach. It will give you the ability to get into your
clients head and change them from the inside out.
Ultimately, whether the goal is to lose 20kg or build
muscle mass, it can be done to each and every client.
Everyone wants to be healthy, happy, fit and strong and
will pay whatever price you ask if you they know for a
fact you can deliver. Remember, everyone wants the
above, not just gym-goers. So don’t limit your clientele to
just the gym. Opportunities for getting new clients are
ever present but it’s up to you to have acquired the skills
in order to sell packages and get excellent results.

What does the term fitness business mean to you?
Fitness is the knowledge, everything to do with
programming, writing nutritional plans and CPD’s etc.
Mindset sits behind it and underpins the knowledge of
fitness but no one in the industry discusses it.
Business is the strategy you have in place for working in
and on your business. If you look at your calendar, is
there any time set aside for working on your business
and improving its systems?
If you’re running a business, how do you dress? Do you
come across as professional?
When conducting a consultation it’s best to forget the
gym gear and dress formally instead, you’ll be received
better and your conversions will increase tremendously.

What do you want to be known for? How do you want
people left feeling about your brand?
People should be left inspired and invigorated, enthused
to be working with you.
You have to embody your brand and the brand
experience. Do you have a plan or breakdown of what
you’re going to do for each client week to week or is
your brand experience incongruent?
Great brands are talked about and referrals are a by-
product of a great brand.
Improving the way you ask questions will improve your
effectiveness during consultations. Don’t talk at people.
BTA will teach you how to ask great questions and
implement them during your consultations.
Once you own mindset, branding and the science of
persuasion your business will grow exponentially.
