AmoresecuremeansofdisseminatingPDFfilesistoutilizeDigitalRightsManagement(DRM)systems.AdobehasbuiltaDRMsystemcalledAdobeContentServer,whichallowsformoresecuredistributionbymakingthePDFdownloadableandaccessibleonlytothepersonoruserwhohaspurchasedorrequestedthebook.AdobeContentServeristheDRMserversoftwareplatformthatAdobehasdevelopedthatallowsotherentitiestosetupaDRMserver.AdobeContentServerrequiresextensivesetup,andthesubscriptiontothesoftwarethroughAdobecanbequiteexpensive.Forcostefficiency,easeofuse,andsupport,third-partyproviderswhoalreadyhavetheAdobeContentServersetupcanbeutilized.

AdobeDigitalEditions,whichisavailableasafreedownloadforcomputers,tablets,andmobilephones,isthereaderthatworkswiththeAdobeContentServerDRMtosupplythePDFeBooksecurely.ThepurchaserofthesecurePDFeBookwouldusetheAdobeDigitalEditionsprogramtoaccess,read,andusetheproduct.InordertoaccessandviewthebookinAdobeDigitalEditions,theuserneedsanAdobeIDsothattheAdobeContentServercanauthenticatethepersonusingthebookupondownloadandallowinitialfileaccess.

WhenuserspurchaseaneBookthathasbeensecuredusingthemethoddescribedhere,theywillreceivea.acsmfile(AdobeContentServerManagerfile)—thenewlysecuredAdobePDFeBookfilethatwillbeopenedinAdobeDigitalEditionsforaccessanduse.

UsingtheDRMmethodfordistributionrestrictsaccessofthebooktooneparticularAdobeIDor,inotherwords,oneperson.TheDRMcanalsoallowforthebooktobesyncedandusedonanydevicethathastheAdobeDigitalEditionsreaderinstalled,anduserscanloginwiththeAdobeIDtheyusedtoinitiallyopenthebook.AdobeDigitalEditionsreaderisavailableonWindows,Mac,Android,Kindle(throughAndroidApplicationPackage,orAPKsideload),andiPhone;therefore,userscansyncthebookfromanyofthesedevicesaslongastheylogintoAdobeDigitalEditionswiththeAdobeIDinitiallyusedtodownloadandaccessthebook.

ThisguidewilltouchonthewaysofdisseminatingaPDFfile/PDFeBooksecurely,withorwithoutDigitalRightsManagement.Itwillalsointroducehowtointegratethird-partydigitalrightsmanagementservicewithe-commerceplugins,extensions,andplatformsforsellingthePDFeBooksonline.

TosecureaPDFwithstandardpasswordsecuritysettings,youwillneedAdobeAcrobatPro.ThissoftwarerequiresasubscriptionthroughAdobe.Thereisa30-dayfreetrialforthosewhowouldliketotrythesoftwarebeforebuying.AdobeAcrobatProisnottobeconfusedwiththefreeAdobeReader.AdobeReaderonlyallowsforPDFstobeviewedandaccessed.AdobeAcrobatProisforeditingpurposes.

Beforecontinuing,makesureyouhaveAdobeAcrobatProinstalledonyourcomputer.

Figure1isascreenshotofanexamplePDFdocument—openedusingAdobeReader—thatwewillusethroughouttheguide.Noticetheright-handsideofthetitleonthetopbaroftheprogramsays,“AdobeAcrobatReaderDC.”ThisisaneasywaytodeterminewhichprogramopenedthePDF—AdobeReaderorAdobeAcrobatPro.AdobeReaderandAdobeAcrobatProlookverysimilar,sotheycanbeeasilyconfused.Atthemoment,thisPDFhasnosecurityappliedandcanbeopenedandeditedwithoutenteringapassword.

Dependingonthesecuritylevelyouselect,youmayberestrictedfrommakingfurtherchangesonceyousaveyourPDF.ItisabestpracticetosaveanarchivecopyofthePDFfilewithnosecuritytoensurethatyouareabletomakefutureeditsasneeded.

UponreopeningthefileinAdobeAcrobatPro,youwillbepromptedforapasswordwhenthefileisopenedorwhensomeonetriestoeditit.

Althoughthismethodallowsforsomeminimalsecurity,ithasmanylimitations.Anyusercouldeasilysharethepasswordwithanotherperson,andtheprotectionswouldberendereduseless.Additionally,anumberofprogramsavailableonlinearecapableofunlockingthesedocumentswithouttheuseoftherequiredpassword.Overall,onlyminimalsecuritymaybeobtainedusingthesettingsbuiltintoAdobeAcrobatPro.

SecuringaPDFUsingDigitalRightsManagement

Third-PartyAdobeContentServerforDigitalRightsManagementUsingDigitalRightsManagement(DRM)isthemostsecurewayofdistributingaPDFeBook.TheAdobeContentServerisAdobe’sDRMserverplatform.ItstoresandmanagesaccesstotheeBookusingaperson’sAdobeID.ThisensuresthattheonlyuseraccessingandusingthebookisthepersonorAdobeIDtowhomthebookisregistered.TheAdobeContentServerplatformitselfisquiteexpensiveonitsownandrequiresextensivesetupandmanagement.Luckily,therearethird-partyprovidersoftheAdobeContentServerthatoffertheDRMasaservice,atalowercost.Hereisalistofsomethird-partyAdobeContentServerproviders.Thislistisnotexhaustive,butthesearethemostpopular.

Afterthebookhasbeenadded,itwillbelistedonthe“BookManagement”page,whereitcanbeaccessedandeditedwhenevernecessary.NowthatthebookisintheEditionGuardsystem,securelinkscanbegeneratedtodisseminatetocustomers.Togeneratealink,makesureyouarestillonthe“BookManagement”pageandclick“DownloadLink”nexttothebookforwhichyouwouldliketogeneratethelink.ThepopupinFigure10willappear.Here,youinsertthenumberoflinksyouwishtogenerateandclick“Generate.”Generatedlinkswillappearinthetextboxpanewithinthispopup.Fromthere,youcancopyandpastethelinksinthetextboxintoanemailtosendtothecustomerforsecuredownloadandaccessofthePDFbook.
