What’s new

Amazon Confidential Page 2

In 2020 the Internal Revenue Service issued a redesigned

W-4 form.

The further versions of the W-4 form supersede the

previous 2019 version.

If your tax situation did not change since 2019, no action is

required, but if you need to update your tax information

from now on, you will have to use this new W-4

Version date: 08-Jan-21

The W-4 is a one-page

form, and is organized

into five steps. Steps 1

and 5 are always

required, while steps 2

to 4 are only required if

they apply to you.

In the next pages we will

go through each one of

them.

Step 1: Your personal information

Step 2: Multiple jobs or spouse works

Step 3: Claim dependents

Step 4: Other adjustments

Step 5: Your signature

Step 1: Your personal information

(a)(b)

(c)

(a) Enter here your full name and address – keep this information always up-to-date.

(b) Your social security number – you find it on your social security card. Does your name match the name on your social security card? If not, to ensure you get credit for your earnings, contact SSA at 800-772-1213 or go to www.ssa.gov .

(c) Check your anticipated filing status. This will determine the standard deduction and tax rates used to compute your withholding.

Version date: 08-Jan-21

Step 2: Multiple Jobs or Spouse Works

Amazon Confidential Page 5

Use this step if you (1) have more than one job at the same time, or (2) are married filing jointly and you and your spouse both work. In other cases, skip this step.

If you need to complete this step, choose one of the following options (see more details in the next pages) :

(a) Use the estimator at www.irs.gov/W4AppIt most accurately calculates the additional tax you need to have withheld, and to enter in Step 4(c).

(b) Use the Multiple Jobs Worksheet (see next page) and enter the result in Step 4(c)

(c) If you (and your spouse) have a total of only two jobs, you may instead check the

box in option (c). You shall check this box in both the W-4s you will fill out.

Step 2a: Tax withholding estimator

If you select the link www.irs.gov/W4App on step 2a, you will

access to an IRS website which will guide you in the

calculations.

If you want to know more about how the Tax Withholding

Estimator, consult https://www.irs.gov/individuals/tax-

withholding-estimator-faqs .

Step 2b: Multiple Jobs WorksheetYou find this worksheet at page 3 of the online W-4 form. This worksheet calculates the total extra tax for all jobs. Fill this worksheet on only ONE Form W-4. Withholding will be most accurate if you complete the worksheet and enter the result on the Form W-4 for the highest paying job.

Every field must be filled appropriately using the correct table you will find at

page 4 of the online W-4 form. For example, If you have two jobs or you’re

married filing jointly and you and your spouse each have one job, you have to fill

out the field #1, with the corresponding number you will find on the first table

on page 4. See the example on this page.

If you want these taxes to be withheld each pay period from your paycheck, you

will have to add this amount in the step 4b. (See page 10 of this guide).

Step 2c: Two jobs in totalIf you (and your spouse) have two jobs in total, check

the box on step 2c in both the W-4s you will submit.

If the box is checked, the standard deduction and tax

brackets will be cut in half for each job to calculate

withholding. This option is roughly accurate for jobs

with similar pay; otherwise, more tax than necessary

may be withheld, and this extra amount will be larger

the greater the difference in pay is between the two

jobs.

Please note: if one of the two jobs is a self-

employed, including as an independent contractor,

use step 2a.

Step 3: Claim dependentsStep 3 provides instructions for determining the amount of the child tax credit and the credit for other dependents that you maybe able to claim when you file your tax return. The total goes in the field (c). The IRS recommends only the higher earning spouse to complete Step 3. The lower earning spouse does not need to complete Step 3 if the other does.

(a)(b)

(c)

(a) Formula: (number of children under the age of 17 as of December 31) x 2000. For example, if you have 2 children below 17 years old, enter “4000”. Note: the child(ren) must be your dependent who generally live with you for more than half the year, and must have the required social security number.

(b) You may be able to claim a credit for other dependents for whom a child tax credit can’t be claimed, such as an older child or a qualifying relative. In this case the formula is: (number of other dependents) x 500.

(c) Here you have to enter the sum of (a) and (b).Note: you can also include other tax credits in this step, such as education tax credits and the foreign tax credit. To do so, add an estimate of the amount for the year to your credits for dependents and enter the total amount in Step 3. for example if the sum of (a) and (b) is 5000, and you have a $1000 education tax credit and a $500 foreign tax credit, you shall enter (5000+1000+500)=6500 in the field (c).Note: Including these credits will increase your paycheck and reduce the amount of any refund you may receive when you file your tax return.

Step 4: Other adjustments

Version date: 08-Jan-21 Amazon Confidential Page 10

Use this step if you (1) have more than one job at the same time, or (2) are married filing jointly and you and your spouse both work. If not, skip this step.

The IRS recommends only the higher earning spouse to complete Step 4 (a) and (b). The lower earning spouse does not need to complete Step 4 (a) and (b) if the other does.

See next pages for more details.

(a)

(c)(b)

Step 4a: Other income (not from jobs)

Amazon Confidential Page 11

Enter here the total of your other estimated income for the year, if any. Excluding income from any jobs or self-

employment. If you complete Step 4(a), you likely won’t have to make estimated tax payments for that income. If you

prefer to pay estimated tax rather than having tax on other income withheld from your paycheck, see Form 1040-ES,

Estimated Tax for Individuals ( https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1040-es ).

Step 4b: Deductions

Amazon Confidential Page 12

if you expect to claim deductions other than the basic standard

deduction on your fiscal year’s tax return, and want to reduce your

withholding to account for these deductions, enter in this step the

amount from the Deductions Worksheet, line 5. You find this

worksheet at page 3 of the online W-4 form. This includes both

itemized deductions and other deductions such as for student loan

interest and IRAs.

Step 4c: Extra withholding

Amazon Confidential Page 13

If you would like to have an additional amount of federal withholding tax withheld enter the amount here,

including any amounts from the Multiple Jobs Worksheet, line 4 (Step 2b, see page 7 of this guide). Do not

put the annual amount in this box.

Note: Entering an amount here will reduce your paycheck each pay period (for example, every week if you

are paid weekly), and will either increase your refund or reduce any amount of tax that you owe.

(c)

Step 5: Your signature

Version date: 08-Jan-21 Amazon Confidential Page 14

Your signature and date are required to submit a valid W-4 form. If you fill out the W-4 online, your signature is replaced by a guided procedure of on-line acknowledgement.

(a) (b)

The remaining boxes of this step are taken care of by your employer. After submitting your W-4 you have to verify whether your state requires an additional withholding certificate. If this is the case, we encourage you to follow your state’s guidelines.
