Note: A big thanks to Ambivect for allowing me to reproduce his how‐to. I take absolutely no credit for this How To nor the pics used therein, they are, and remain, the property of Ambivect, cheers m8! I've used this myself and fitted T/C with no problems in an hour. This mod also works with the 2.6 (Y26SE) engine. Tools required Philips screw driver Trim Tool ( or a flat bladed screwdriver) Auto electric crimp pliers Philips Screwdriver Small flat bladed screwdriver....(If you don't have heated seats and want to use the illumination and earth wires from that socket) Some confidence!! Oh yes........and a switch: Vx part no 9138056

The whole task from start to finish...including a couple of brews...less than 45 minutes!! Cost me about £18.00 and £17 odd of that was for the switch... you will need a length of auto cable and some insulation tape to keep it all looking tidy. 1) Locate the wiring/sockets behind the passenger kick plate. I assume you are able to remove this panel... If you need to ask how to get this off then I would respectfully suggest that you don't attempt to fit the TC modification yourself.



2) Now you have the sockets on display the one we are interested in is the large blue one.

3) Locate the black/red wire on the underside of this multi connector (A). You will see that there are two wires this colour. We want the one that is nearest to the front of the car. You can either cut it, splice into it or, as I have done fed a wire into the corresponding plug part of the connector (C). (Use a length of wire that will reach up to the centre dash to where the blanking switch is)

4) You can see from the photo where the extra wire goes. You can now understand why you have the choice to cut it. There is no matching factory fit corresponding wire... I assume that this is where the OE TC switch would have been wired to. I just bared off half an inch of my new wire and pushed it through. When you close the connector it will lock it down and it is very secure. Close the connector and that's it. Now tape the wire to the OE loom and feed it through towards the centre of the dash. I did remove the cardboard tray above the footwell but didn't need to remove the glove box.



5) Now we need to gain access to the back of the switches in the dash. First remove the ashtray and the two plastic covers either side. Remove the screws and gently but firmly pull out the ashtray and cup holder unit.



6) Now we have to unclip the upper surround. There are no screws. I gently but firmly eased the lower edge and gradually I released it. Spring clips hold it in the upper part..the lower part is just on small locators. Remove the aircon switch,heated seat switch/blanking switch and TC blanking switch. I didn't have to remove the TM (TrafficMaster) switch. You can see the connectors for the heated seats...I don't have them and I can't see myself buying any so I decided to release the illumination and earth wires from that location and to put them into the back of the socket were the TC switch will be installed.



7) Undo the two screws. One either side of the radio and lower the whole unit out of the dash. Note how the upper edge of the unit is slotted in to the dash. You don't have to take the radio out but you can if you wish...it may give you a bit more room to work.

You can now slide the right hand side bank of connectors out of their position and get to releasing the illumination and earth from the heated seat socket. There are two grey rectangular lugs on top of the bank of sockets (you can see them in the pic above) You need to just prise the farthest one upwards and pull it out....don't worry the connectors won't fall out. You have to push a small bladed flat screwdriver from the switch side of the connector to flatten a small metal lug to release the spade connectors. Once you have them free bend the metal lug back up so that it locks into place when you push it in to the TC socket. If you have heated seats then just splice into each of these wires and extend to the TC socket. You will see that I released 3 wires...grey/yellow = illumination, brown = Earth and black/yellow... I cut this so I could connect it to the new wire I had connected in the footwell.



9) The connections for the TC switch are the same as the models with TC fitted.....This is a connector from an earlier model ( courtesy of Planty)

10) Feed the new wire from the footwell up to the switches. Either do like I did and connect the donor wire and connector from the unused heated switch or put a new suitable connector on it. Note the positions of each wire and push them home into the TC socket. Fit the new TC switch and try it out. Turn ignition on and wait for all idiot lights to go out ( Apart from the handbrake of course) Press your new TC switch and the TC warning light will now come on....This means that TC is now switched OFF... viola...you now have switchable TC. No other systems are affected...Speedo, Cruise and ABS are all operational.



11) You can now start to put everything back together..... I hope you remember how to do that !!



(The handbrake is off.... just to make sure that all was well)
