• Measure the circumference of the head. • If the hat is for a gift you might like to consult the excellent chart produced
here… http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/size-chart.html
• Measure the height of the head … from eyebrows to crown.• Don’t worry too much about this as you can always fold a cuff on the hat.
• Chain so that the length of the chain = the circumference of the head.• Each time I have made these hats I have measured the chain at full stretch for a
snug fit.
• Begin crocheting your “aida canvas”. Just double crochet back & forth until the length of the fabric = the height of the head
• Fold the fabric in half so that the short sides meet.• Slip stitch to seam.
• Measure the width of the folded & seamed fabric (now a cylinder).
• Divide the width of the opening by 4 & mark that distance from each end of the folded cylinder.
• Double crochet from the side in to your mark.• Repeat for the other side.
• Push your two small seams in to meet in the centre. This makes the cross on top of the hat.
• Double crochet all the way across this seam.
• Now bring two of the points in to meet each other…
• … & tie together. You might like to reinforce this with a couple of stitches.
• Repeat for the other side.• Weave in your ends.
• Turn your hat in the right way.• It should look something like this.
• Now cross stitch your design into the “aida” you’ve created.
