How to make a Digital Movie with QuickTime Note: The following instructions should work with either the logitec webcams or the built in webcams in the Macintosh lab at the Robert Henderson Language Media Center. The result will be a QuickTime movie that can be played on either Windows or Macintosh. To make a digital movie, you will need the following:

Webcam (Logitech or built-in)

QuickTime software

Media on which to save movie (CD or flashdrive)

Steps: 1. Preparing the settings 2. Recording the movie 3. Editing the movie 4. Saving and exporting the movie

1. Preparing the Settings

To record a new movie, open QuickTime by clicking the QuickTime icon in the toolbar. No window will appear.

At the top of the screen, click on File and select “New Movie Recording”.

You should see a window with the camera’s view in it.

Click on the down arrow on the recording toolbar for input/output options and select the camera and microphone you would like to use.

You can also expand the menu (click the down arrow) to choose the video quality:

“High” gives you a larger video size of 640x480 pixels. The resulting file size will be about 13MB per minute recorded.

“Medium” gives you a smaller video size of 320x240 and a smaller file size. A one-minute recording will result in a 8MB file. For long recordings (10 minutes or longer), choose this setting.

You can also choose the location where the file will be saved. Make sure Desktop is selected. Unless you do not need sound in your recording, you are done with the settings. If you do want to mute sound, see the next box.

If you want video only in your recording, please note that QuickTime itself does not offer an option to turn off sound. Instead, we recommend that you turn the system input volume down to zero. To do that, open System Preferences, and then click on Sound. In the Input tab, slide the Input Volume indicator all the way down to the left.

2. Recording the Movie

To record, simply click on the red record button on the recording toolbar.

When you are finished recording, click on the stop button on the recording toolbar.

After recording, you can now trim your movie. Click on the icon on the recording toolbar then select “Trim…”

You should see a trim bar at the bottom of the window.

To trim, click on the one of the yellow edges and slide the cursor to the point to which you would like to trim.

After you have trimmed your movie to where you would like, click on Trim.

For additional information about your movie, select “Show Movie Inspector” from the window menu at the top of the screen.

A small black window should appear next to your movie.

4. Saving and Exporting the Movie

When you click the stop button, your movie should automatically be saved to the desktop and should appear as an icon.

If this is not the case, in the File menu at the top of the screen select “Save As…”

You should see a new window at the top of your movie window. Select “Desktop” next to “Where:”

Name your movie.

Note: If you are recording the

movie for a class, check with the

instructor regarding how to name

your movie file. Click “Save” to save your movie. You should now have your movie file on your desktop.
