make a fabric notebook cover

Page 2: How To Make A Fabric Notebook Cover

• This is hardly even a “how to”. It’s just a super simple, super speedy bit of fun.

• You’ll need your notebook, your chosen fabrics, some interfacing, scissors, pinking shears or a pinking blade for your rotary cutter & your sewing machine.

Step 2:

• There’s no measuring going on with this super quick project…just use your eye. Lay your notebook on your fabric & away you go!

• Rough cut the fabric so that it is double as wide as your open notebook.

Step 3:

• The fabric I chose was a really well loved & worn table cloth. I’m going to interface to give a bit of strength.

Step 4:

• If you’re going to interface press your interfacing to the fabric.

• If you’ve got nice sturdy fabric – skip this step.

Step 5:

• Now it’s time to line.• Prepare your outer fabric & your lining fabric by placing

the wrong sides together – otherwise known as a fabric sandwich.

Page 7: How To Make A Fabric Notebook Cover

Step 6:

• We are cutting both the lining & the outer together.• I like to have the outer fabric facing me because then I have more

control over print placement.• Cut away excess fabric with your pinking blade so that you have a

visual 2/3 of single notebook page extra fabric on either side of the open notebook.

Step 7:

• Cut the top & bottom of the fabric sandwich. • Again, just estimate (about 1cm).

Page 9: How To Make A Fabric Notebook Cover

Step 8:

• Now we are going to stitch the fabric sandwich together. • Just run a line of stitching down the short sides.

Step 9:

• Fold & press the seam on the shorter sides of your rectangle. • You want to hide the raw edge here.

Page 11: How To Make A Fabric Notebook Cover

Step 10:

• Lay your open notebook onto the right side of the cover.• Fold the excess over the cover as pictured.• You need to close the notebook before you pin into place

as the cover needs to be a LOOSE fit.

Page 12: How To Make A Fabric Notebook Cover

Step 11:

• See the excess fabric?• This allows the notebook to open & close freely. If you make

the fit too firm you won’t be able to close your notebook.

Page 13: How To Make A Fabric Notebook Cover

Step 12:

• Mark a little stitching guideline. • I allow about ½ cm so that the notebook will slide freely into

the cover.

Page 14: How To Make A Fabric Notebook Cover

Step 13:

• Stitch all the way along the long edge as marked.• This is creating the pockets.

Page 15: How To Make A Fabric Notebook Cover

Step 14:

• Trim your corners on the diagonal to remove the bulk.

Page 16: How To Make A Fabric Notebook Cover

Step 15:

• Turn in the right way & test that the notebook fits & opens & closes well.

• If you’ve goofed just get out the quick unpick & have another go.

Page 17: How To Make A Fabric Notebook Cover

Step 16:

• Turn back in the wrong way & trim up your seam allowances.

Page 18: How To Make A Fabric Notebook Cover

Step 17:

• Turn back in the right way.• Press the seam between the two pockets so that it sits

flat.

Page 19: How To Make A Fabric Notebook Cover

Step 18:

• Stitch along the pressed seam.• Do NOT stitch over the pocket or your notebook won’t fit!

Page 20: How To Make A Fabric Notebook Cover

Step 19:

• Slide the notebook inside the pockets.• You’re done!
