Law Requirement

• Title 38, Chapter 33 (Post 9/11) GI Bill law requires service members to be actively serving in the armed forces and commit to a 4 year additional service obligation in order to transfer their Chapter 33 benefits to their spouse and/or dependents.

• Failure to fulfill this additional service obligation will result in termination of the transfer of education benefits (TEB) election and recoupment of all funds received.

What if I retire before completing the service obligation?

• Service Members who are considering retirement need to verify they have fulfilled their additional service obligation prior to submitting their retirement paperwork. Failure to do so could result in termination of their TEB election and a possible recoupment that could easily exceed $100k.

Where can I verify my obligation end date?

• Service members can verify the obligation end date (a.k.a. end of additional service obligation) tied to their TEB election by printing their DoD approval letter in MilConnect.

• On the TEB page of MilConect is a link to the DoD approval Letter. This link is located on the top-left hand side of the page.
