FIGURES. When ordering old style faces, specifywhether old style figures (890) or modernised oldstyle figures (890) are desired. If no specific directions are furnished, modernised old style figureswill generally be supplied. When ordering figuresof any kind, state whether they are to run in themagazine or pi.

NOTE.—Figures and points are usually madeon a 4-2-1 ratio, that is, figures on one-half theem body and thin spaces, etc., on one-quarter ofthe em body. However, when the figure size offace is less than 0553" the points and th inspaces are usually made on a size equal to threeto the em body.

B R A S S H A I R S P A C E S o f 0 0 7 " , 0 1 4 " a n d021" thickness can be supplied from stock. Hair

spaces are too thin to be distributed into the magazine. They have no combination teeth and dropout into the front pi bowl.

THE CHANNEL ENTRANCES of In ter typemagazines are variably spaced. This permits thefree use of larger faces. For instance, an 18-pointcap W of normal width will run in an Intertypemagazine, but not in all the magazines of othermakes. Em spaces, leaders and dashes up to 221thousandths of an inch will run in the regularchannels of standard Intertype magazines, butfigure spaces, leaders and dashes must be substituted in some magazines of other makes when theem s ize exceeds 210 thousandths o f an inch.

A M E R I C A N D E P T H M A T R I C E S . F o r t h e c o nvenience of overseas users, a large number of ourtype faces are made in American depth as well asEnglish depth. Matrices made in English depth aredesignated by the symbol [E]. Matrices so designated have a letter depth of 075" while Americandepth matrices have a letter depth of 043".Special height moulds and special equipment mustbe used for American depth matrices.

Intertype wide tooth matrices also run on other line composing machines■ f
