Guthrie eighth grader J.D. Hunnicut (11) goes up with the rebound shot in game action against El Reno Monday night. Looking to help Hunnicut out are teammates Cory Miller (31) and Chase Bufford (32). The Junior Jays jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter and went on to a 47-32 win. Hunnicut led the scoring efforts with 12 points. Bufford and Jalen Morgan each scored 10 points in the game. The eight graders are 7-5 on the year and travel to Perkins tonight for game action.

Cashion teams have mixedresults in tournament games

The Langston Women’s basketball team kept their perfect season intact earlier this week with their 14th win of the season in a 97-45 rout of Bacone College Monday night in Langston.Earlier in the day the Lady Lions got moved up to # 5 in the country as the NAIA top25 basketball rankings were announced.

The Lady Lions had five players in double figures as everyone on the roster saw some action. Langston led 40-24 after the first half of action. The Lady Lions then scored 57 points in the second half to finalize the rout.

Tayla Vaughn with 18 points led the onslaught of double figure scoring. Shontice Simmons (15), Vicoria Felix (14), Shantoya Fisher (13) and Ayana Jackson (11) all posted double figure scoring in the contest.

The Lady Lions defense forced 36 turnovers and shot 28-for-37 from the free thro line in the win.

The Langston teams traveled to Waxahachie, Texas on Jan. 7.and defeated Southwestern Assemblies of God University by a score of 65-34. The Lady Lions took a 32-14 lead after the first half in a very slow tempo game. Simmons led all scorers with 17 points. Fisher and Jackson tallied 12 and 10 points respectively to join Simmons as a double figure scorer.

The Lions meanwhile won their fourth game of the season with a 74-55 win over Bacone College at the C.F. Gayles Fieldhouse. Nate Barfield and Paul Campbell led the Lions scoring attack with 18 points apiece. Modteets Williams also contributed 10 points for the Lions. Barfield was the leading rebounder, as he grabbed nine boards.

The Lions led 32-25 at the half and extended the lead in the second half by outscoring the visitors 42-30 for the final margin.

The win gave the Lions a split for the weekend as they dropped a hard fought 67-58 decision to Southwest Assemblies of God University Jan.7.

The Langston teams are back on the road tonight in Hobbs, New Mexico against University of the Southwest. Both teams return to the Gayles Fieldhouse for Red River Athletic Conference games Saturday night against Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU). The Women’s game will tip-off around 5:30 p.m. and will pit the first and second place teams against one another. After Monday’s action the Lady Lions are 8-0 in conference action, while OLLU is 7-1 in conference action and 12-2 overall.

The Lions, whom will tip-off around 7:30 p.m., have come back to square up their conference schedule at 4-4, 4-9 overall must face an OLLU team that is 8-0 in conference action and 11-3 overall.

The Guthrie High school basketball teams got back in conference action Tuesday night with a road trip down I-35 to Noble.

Both teams came home with conference wins to show for their efforts. The BlueJays won their game 60-47 and the Lady BlueJays recorded a 68-37 win in their game.

In the boy’s game, the ‘Jays jumped out to a 14-8 lead after the first quarter and a 30-20 lead at halftime. The second half was pretty even as Guthrie could only out score the home team 30-29 for the final margin.

Jerrick Warren led four BlueJays in double figure scoring with 17 points. Shron Parker had 14 points in the winning effort. Kai Callins and Bailey Nichols each chipped in 10 points for the ‘Jays. Codee Gross (seven points) and J.T. McFadden (two points) closed out the Guthrie scoring efforts.

Guthrie Head Coach Pete Papahronis said, “We just could not pull away. They played rally tough. There were 54 free throws shot for the entire game by both teams. The game was called very tightly, but the game was called the same for both sides. We were always in control. We have Shawnee coming in tomorrow night. They like to push the ball; there will be a lot of points. Our defensive transition will be very important. We must force them to

play five-on five.”The ‘Jays (6-4) return home for

Homecoming tomorrow night for a conference match-up with the Shawnee Wolves (4-6). Game time is 8 p.m.

The Lady BlueJays recorded their third win of the season with a 68-37 runaway win over the Noble Lady Bears. Guthrie jumped out to a 17-8 lead after the first quarter and just kept expanding it, as the lead was 38-14 by halftime. The third quarter was the biggest quarter for the Lady ‘Jays as they posted 24 points to the home teams nine to expand the lead to 62-23 going into the final stanza. The Guthrie bench finished up the game with six points in the fourth quarter for the final outcome.

Mikaela Murillo, Melinda Murillo and Gracyn Smith led the way with 15 points each. Kamber Smedley (nine points), Cassidy Jones (four points) and Paige Stevenson (four points) also dented the scoring column.

Dalynn Porter (two points), Rachel Freie (two points) Paige Liggins (two points) and Abby Chadd (one point) closed out the scoring for the Guthrie squad.

The Lady BlueJays were a perfect seven-for- seven from beyond the arc Tuesday night.

Next up for the Lady ‘Jays (3-7) is the #2 ranked Shawnee Lady Wolves (11-0). Tip-off for the girl’s game tomorrow night is 6:30 p.m.

The Cashion High School basketball teams were involved in the Three- Rivers Conference Tournament last week and went 1-2 in their efforts. The ‘Cats ended the tournament on a successful note, as they posted a 49-27 win over the Okeene Junior Varsity team. The game was close throughout until Cashion outscores the home team 25-10 in the final quarter. Britt Basler led all scorers with 14 points. In the first round, the Wildcats played their Kingfisher County neighbor Okarche and came up on the short end of a 45-25 verdict. Okarche led 11-2 after the first quarter and 16-5 at the half. There was a little more offense in the third quarter as Okarche outscored Cashion 20-17. The Wildcats could only manage three points in the final stanza. Hunter Mason led all Wildcat scorers with seven points. Ty Reasoner had five points in a supporting role. Basler

scored 11 of Cashion’s 29 points in their second round loss to Thomas. Thomas was in front 34-17 at the half and quickly expanded that out to 50-22 after three quarters. Thomas kept the pressure on as they outscored the Wildcats 22-7 in the final stanza, for the final 72-29 score. The Cashion Ladycats also participated in the Three Rivers Conference tournament this weekend and split a pair of games. The Ladycats defeated Watonga 63-40 on Saturday in the consolation final at the tournament. Alix Robinson led all scorers with 28 points. Taylor Mires and Jayci Robison each scored 14 points in the win. Cashion jumped out to an 18-5 lead after the first quarter and expanded the lead to 47-29 at the half. The second half was very low scoring and the Ladycats coasted home with the win. Cashion ended up on the loser’s side of the

bracket as they stumbled late to Okeene 59-55 in the opening round. Cashion led 39-34 at the half and still held the lead going into the fourth quarter. Okeene outscored the Cashion squad 19-9 in the final stanza to secure the win. Robinson led all scorers in the game with 29 points.he Ladycats were back in action Tuesday night as they hosted Oklahoma Baptist Academy (Enid) and dropped a 37-35 decision. Cashion led for three quarters of the game. OBA outscored the home team 13-7 in the fourth quarter. OBA converted 8-of-19 three-point shots to account for 24 of their 37 total points. Robinson led all scorers with 17 points. The Ladycats fall to 6-5 on the year and host Luther tomorrow night and travel to Okarche next Tuesday before they host the County Line Tournament Jan.19-21.
