You Will Need • Large blanket, towel, quilt, or sheet • One or more stuffed animals or other soft toys • As many family members as you can find! Did You Know? This Blanket Toss game is inspired by an Iñupiat tradition that celebrates a successful whaling season. Today, the Blanket Toss is a part of certain celebrations and competitions. Directions Gather everyone together for a family Blanket Toss. Have each person hold a corner or section of the blanket. Place the soft toy in the middle of the blanket. Lift the blanket up and down to make the toy bounce. There are several ways you can play this game. Here are some ideas. (Safety first! Be careful of flying objects and, if you are playing indoors, breakable objects and household furniture.) Count how many times you can toss the toy up before it falls off the blanket. Try to toss the toy up as high as possible. Set a goal, such as: Let’s see if the toy can almost reach the ceiling, or Can we get the toy as high as that branch on the tree? Draw a line down the middle of the blanket with tape or chalk. Place the toy on one side of the line and see how many times you can toss it without it falling off or over the line. Count 1, 2, 3, Go! before you raise the blanket, in your home language or in the Iñupiaq language: Atausiq – one Malaġuk – two Piŋasut – three Kkii! – go! 1 2 3 WEEK 3 HOW TO PLAY TIPS • This is a great game to play outside.
