I – INTRODUCTION

A.) The Priority of Proper Prayer

1.) Jesus devoted himself to prayer. 2.) Jesus himself repeatedly commands us to pray3.) The New Testament often exhorts us to pray4.) The Priority of the New Testament Church was prayer

B.) The purpose of prayer – It’s all about God

C.) The Pattern of proper prayer

1.) Jesus explicitly said that it is a pattern and not meant to be repeated as a prayer itself2.) Jesus warned us not to pray using vain repetitions in verse number 7. 3.) Nowhere in the New Testament do we find this prayer or any other prayer being used repititiously

II – THE PATERNITY OF PRAYER

1.) Relations with God our Father

a.) Not all human beings has the right to call God their father. All humans may be God’s children in terms of creation, but spiritually unbelievers has another father

- JOHN 8:44 - “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”

“Kamo gikan sa inyong amahan nga mao ang yawa, ug ang inyong tinguha mao ang pagtagbaw sa mga pangibog sa inyong amahan. Siya maoy usa ka mamumuno sukad pa sa sinugdan, ug siya walay labut sa kamatuoran kay ang kamatuoran wala man diha kaniya. Inigpamakak niya, siya magasulti tukma sa iyang kaugalingong kinaiya, kay siya bakakon man ug mao ang amahan sa mga bakak.” (Cebuano)

b.) Only those who have received Jesus as Lord and Savior of their lives have become true children of God.

JOHN 1:12 - “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name”

“Apan sa tanang midawat kaniya, sa tanang mitoo sa iyang ngalan, kanila naghatag siyag kagahum sa pagkahimong mga anak sa Dios” (Ceubano)

ROMANS 8:14 – “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God”

“Kay ang tanang ginamandoan sa Espiritu sa Dios, mga anak sila sa Dios.” (Cebuano)

GALATIANS 3:26 – “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.”

”Kay diha kang Cristo Jesus kamong tanan nahimo na mang mga anak sa Dios pinaagi sa pagtoo.”

GALATIANS 4:4 to 7 – “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

“Apan sa pag-abut na sa tukma nga panahon, ang Dios mipadala sa iyang Anak nga natawo ug babaye, natawo ilalum sa kasugoan, aron sa pagtubos sa mga nailalum sa kasugoan, aron kita managdawat sa pagkasinagop ingon nga mga anak.

Ug tungod kay kamo mga anak man, ang Dios mipadala sa Espiritu sa iyang Anak nganhi sa atong mga kasingkasing, nga nagatuwaw, "Abba! Amahan!“ Busa pinaagi sa Dios dili na ikaw ulipon kondili anak, ug kon anak, nan, manununod.” (Cebuano)

2.) Reaffirming the Fatherhood of God

-The patriarchal nature of Jewish society has always viewed God as an intimate loving Father. (Psalm 103:13)

- Sadly in Jesus day this view of God has been lost with the unfaithfulness of the Jews and the influence of pagan cultures.

-Jesus reaffirmed to them what the Bible always taught about God, that he is a loving Father, genuinely concerned with the needs of his children:

- Jesus always referred to God as ‘The Father” except during the time of His crucifixion

- In the New Testament, God is called "Father" 245 times.

- Although the Greek word here used is “Pater” Jesus no doubt used spoke of the word “Abba” here which an endearing term for Father used in Aramaic, the language spoken in Jesus day. (Romans 8:15, Galatians 4:6)

- Jesus often spoke of the loving kindness of the father

MATHEW 6:30 -32 – “Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? For after all these things do the Gentiles seek for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.”

“Ug kon sa ingon gibistihan sa Dios ang mga tanum sa kaumahan, nga karon buhi pa apan ugma igasalibay na ngadto sa hudno, dili ba kamo labaw pa nga iyang pagabistihan, O mga tawo nga diyutayg pagsalig?

Busa, ayaw na kamo pagkabalaka nga manag-ingon, `Unsa may among kan-on? o `Unsa may among imnon? O `Unsa may among ibisti?` Kay ang mga Gentil nagapangita niining tanang mga butanga; ug ang inyong langitnong Amahan nasayud nga kamo nagakinahanglan niining tanan.”

MATHEW 7:9 – 11 – “Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?”

“Kinsa bang tawhana diha kaninyo nga kon ang iyang anak mangayog tinapay, hatagan hinoon niyag bato? Ug kon kini mangayog isda, hatagan hinoon niyag bitin? Busa, kon kamo, bisan sa inyong pagkadautan, mahibalo man ganing mohatag ug mga maayong gasa ngadto sa inyong mga anak, unsa pa gayud ka labaw pa sa inyong Amahan nga anaa sa langit nga mohatag ug mga maayong butang ngadto sa mga nagapangayo kaniya?”

3.) Results of knowing God as Father

a.) Knowing God as our Father means the end of fear and loneliness (Luke 12: 22 to 28) (Psalm 68:5,6) (1 John 3:1) (Ephesians 1:3)

b.) Knowing God as OUR FATHER teaches us to unselfishness

The entire pattern of prayer is plural. We are petitioning God what is best for all and not for one

c.) Knowing God as our father calls for obedience to his will (John 6:38) (Mathew 12:50)

MATHEW 7:21 - “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

"Dili ang tanang magaingon kanako, `Ginoo, Ginoo,` makasulod sa gingharian sa langit, kondili ang nagatuman sa kabubut-on sa akong Amahan nga anaa sa langit.” (Cebuano)
