Finding a box

Find any box that would hold soil, has an open lid and is quite, moderately deep.

Finding some soil

Find some normal peat, soil but NOT compost. And fill your tub with it about four inches from the top so that when it`s digging it doesnt spray the soil out.

Finding a location

Somewhere cold enough for hibernation to take place but not too cold.

Be ABSOLUTELY SURE that it is PERFECTLY DRY. As damp could cause shell rot.

Make sure that the hay is dust extracted as it can aggrivate their eyes during hibernation.

Before you put your tortoise into hibernation you should know

Check on your tortoise regularly.

Your tortoise should be healthy, well fed and the perfect weight before going into hibernation.

Make sure the box and the location is dry as damp could cause shell rot.

Make sure the box and soil is deep enough for the tortoise to burrow.

Putting your tortoise into hibernation

Put your tortoise in, put it in a cold place (we put it in the garage) and allow it to dig itself under the soil.

Tortoise burrowing behaviour

Your tortoise should then burrow a hole with a chamber at the end of it. Don`t worry if it doesn`t do this and don`t put your finger in the hole as it may collapse the burrow. It doesn`t harm the tortoise if the hole caves in but it isn`t ideal.

When will a tortoise wake up and what will it do ?

They will wake up between May and July and might not be able to or won`t

Produce waste

Eat

Drink

How can I sort this ?

You can give it a bath to help it produce waste.(This almost always works.)

You can feed it it`s favourite food to try and get it to eat.

You will just give it a bowl of water as it will eventually have to drink or will start drinking in it`s own time.
