Drug interaction webpages

In the following presentation you will learn how to search for drug interactions on interactive webpages and what information you can find on static webpages. Here a selection of possible sources of information:

If you would like to exclude a possible drug interaction, it is highly recommended to check at least two different websites!

This is an interactive webpage where you can make a query. The next slides show you how to do a query to check for a possible drug-drug interaction.

This option you choose if you want to know a drug-interaction with a certain antiretroviral drug

This option you choose if you want to know a drug-interaction with a drug which is not a antiretroviral drug

This option you choose if you want to get an overview of the drug-interactions of a certain drug class

Step 1: you select the option “search by antiretroviral drug” Example:

you would like to check if the combination of nevirapine and ketoconazole could lead to a possible drug-interaction

To place a query you need to know the name of the active molecule of the drug (generic name, e.g. nevirapine). In case you have just the brand name (e.g. Viramune) you could check the following webpages first to find out the generic name: www.google.com, www.drugs.com

Step 2: you select “nevirapine” in the list of antiretroviral drugs

Step 3: you select “by individual drug” to check the interaction with

ketoconazole

Step 4: you press the button “submit”

Step 5: you select “ketoconazole” and press the button “submit” at the

end of the list

Would you co-administer ketoconazole with nevirapine?

NO, they advise not to co-administer these two drugs together

This is an interactive webpage where you can make a query. The next slides show you how to do a query checking a possible drug-drug interaction.

On this webpage you can search by generic drug name or by the brand name.

We are taking the same example:

you would like to check if the combination of nevirapine and ketoconazole could lead to a possible drug-interaction

Step 1: this database is working with generic names or with brand names,

so you can type “nevirapine” or “Viramune” in the text box and press

“go”

Step 2: one or more options are shown in the result box, you select

the option you want to check

Step 3: you “click to add” and the chosen option appears in the patient

regimen box

This webpage is requiring registration first, however it is for free!

Step 4: you type “ketoconazole” (or Nizoral) in the text box and press

“go”

Step 5: you select the option you are interested in and press “click to add”

Step 6: the combination of nevirapine and ketoconazole could

lead to interactions, for more information press the button “click

here”

Here the result of your query with detailed information and severity level of the drug interaction!
