Spider veins are smaller than varicose veins, but may be just as embarrassing for many individuals when walking outside in their communities whether it be large such as Times Square, Hollywood Blvd, strolling down South Beach in Miami or smaller towns such as Oneonta, New York or Port Charlotte, FL.

These veins do not cause pain and are not considered a medical problem, but many seek treatment to relieve the unsightly appearance of this venous condition. There are several treatments and procedures in the industry that have proven successful in providing relief to those suffering from spider veins.

Sclerotherapy is one such treatment that is commonly used to treat patients suffering from spider veins. This treatment involves injections of a chemical sclerant that irritates the vessel wall, causing the veins to shrink and collapse. The procedure does not require an anesthetic and patients are usually able to return to work and resume their normal activities immediately following treatment.

Another treatment used to relieve varicose veins is intense pulsed light therapy, or IPL therapy for short. This treatment utilizes pulses of light to target and destroy problem veins. This is also a minimally invasive procedure and most patients resume normal activities shortly after the treatment is administered. Two to four treatments may be required to reach optimal results, although this may vary.

Laser therapies have also proven effective in treating spider veins. These treatments work on the same general principle of collapsing and shrinking the veins so that blood flow is carried out by other veins in the body. While the laser destroys the vein, the surrounding tissue is not harmed. The body's natural processes will eliminate the closed vein over time.

Different types of lasers are used to provide treatment, and patients interested in this method of relieving spider veins are encouraged to consult a vein specialist in your area to learn about each type of laser. There may be some bruising associated with laser treatment, but this typically resolves on its own.

The cost of sclerotherapy is typically lower than that of laser treatments, although this is not always the case. In some cases, these

treatments may be combined to improve results. Before doing so, however, patients should speak with their doctor to determine which treatment may provide the best results.
