Enter a few phrases that describe the products and services you are selling.

Two or three phrases will be sufficient, as the keyword planner will suggest more keywords for you based on your input.

Once this is done, choose the country which you are targeting, and click ‘Get Ideas’.

The keyword planner will bring you to the next screen, giving you a large list of keywords with their metrics. You can click into each ad group for more information on individual keywords in the group.

Once you have identified keywords / groups of keywords that are relevant to your business, click on ‘Add to Plan’.

You can also segment the data further to gain additional insights (e.g devices, locations). This will help you in estimating the number of clicks and cost of your campaigns.

Since your aim is to drive traffic to your website, you should be targeting keywords with high search volume.

Add a filter and sort by search volume in descending order to identify these keywords.

Once this is done, scan through the keywords and pick out those that are relevant to your business.

In this example, I have highlighted and grouped similar keywords together

The next step is to exclude keywords that may be too expensive.

Suppose you do not want to pay more than $3 for each click. Focus on the column ‘Suggested bid’, and manually exclude keywords with a figure of $3 or higher.

In this example, I have separated the two groups of keywords with different highlights.

Keywords with a suggested bid of $3 and below are those that have met your criteria, and should be added into your campaigns.

Before we end this presentation, I will like to share with you two other methods to obtain even more keyword ideas from the google keyword planner.

13.

Going back to the keyword planner tool, enter your website URL into the second field. Based on the content of your website, the keyword planner will suggest keywords relevant to your business.

Method A

In the third field of the keyword planner, choose a category from the dropdown list that is the most relevant to your business.

The keyword planner will come up with a list of keywords that are related to the category.
