What is the Nonprofit Good Practice Guide?

The Nonprofit Good Practice Guide is a project of the Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership, an academic center of excellence affiliated with Grand Valley State University.

Originally funded in 2002 by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the online Guide provides easily accessible and continuously updated information on virtually all aspects of managing a nonprofit organization.

The Guide can be used as:

• a quick online reference in preparation for meetings

• a tool for searching for samples

• as a training tool

• for in-depth research

Resources are organized in 5 different ways:

Topic Areas

The Guide currently has nine topic areas. The topic areas divide resources into broad subjects oriented to the nonprofit sector. Each topic area contains, categories & concepts that further divide them in to the subjects you are looking for.

Resources returned in searches and listed in concepts, are separated by media types. Media types are meant to help you find the exact resource you need, whether its part of sector news, research, training or tools.

Courses, books, manuals, handbooks, tutorials, & podcasts created to teach or train on a particular subject.

Checklists, forms, samples, toolkits, software, and charts or tables that can be used as examples or tools for organizations.
