Wifi Direct

TRANSCRIPT

How to use Wi-Fi Direct?Wi-Fi direct is new with Android 4.0 which allows compatible devices to connect and share data using a Wi-Fi interface. Of all the new features of Android 4.0, I believe this is the nicest add-on offered.

This is a peer-to-peer connection, meaning that two devices are communicating directly without an intermediate access point. You do not need to be connected to the internet, a router, cables, or any other device. This is a wireless connection between two or more devices.

**Thanks to the shortsightedness of the Motorola team, Wi-Fi Peer to Peer Direct is not supported on the Xoom tablets.

Wi-Fi direct is much faster than using a Bluetooth connection, and allows for a greater distance between devices.

For example, if you want to connect your Android ICS tablet to your PC so you can transfer photos, or music files, you can do so using Wi-Fi Direct. Another great use for this would be multi-user games.

First, you must enable the My WiFi connection on your PC. This is easy to do if your PC includes an application called "My WiFi", which is an Intel product which is an implementation of the Wi-Fi Direct standard for easy peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connectivity. This is the same standard that Android 4.0 uses for establishing peer-to-peer connections.

Open the My WiFi application and click on the Enable button. That is all there is to it. Then on your Android tablet, go to Settings, Networking, and enable the Wi-Fi Direct feature. The My WiFi application on your PC will show the tablet as a connected device.
