Summary

TanDEM-X/ TerraSAR-X Amplitude change detection:

• Provides information on even subtle forest canopy disturbances

• Frequent & timely at high resolution

allows early intervention

Forest degradation:

Canopy change persistent for 6 years

a.selective logging canopy stays closed

b.selective logging and following encroachement of agricultural use canopy opens

• Regrowth can be monitored

Uncertainties related to the quantitative estimation of disturbance (relation to number/ volume or

Conclusion

In the context of REDD+ information layers can serve as

• Activity data on degradation for carbon stock change assessment

• Local knowledge is needed to interpret time series

• Efficiency of inventory design combining forest canopy change information and field

measurements needs to be tested and benchmarked with alternative methods
