Welcome to the 2020concert season at HowdenMinster.

Throughout the year theMinster is hosting an excitingseries of evening, lunchtimeand organ concerts featuringacclaimed artists from thisregion and across the world.All concerts take place in theinspiring setting of one ofEast Yorkshire’s largest andfinest historic churches.

Lunchtime highlights includeaward-winning young cellistThomas Bertolotti, a much

anticipated return visit fromvirtuoso concert violinistCharlotte Rowan, and aspecial performance ofBeethoven from horn playerSimon Twigge who hasappeared on BBC Radio 3.

Summer sees the return ofour ever-popular cream teaorgan recitals. Don’t missperformances from thesuperb Austrian concertorganist Stefan Donner, theDirector of Music at YorkMinster Robert Sharpe, andsome of the finest churchmusicians in the region.

We are delighted towelcome an amazing arrayof groups to our eveningconcert series: from theShepherd Group Brass Band- one of the finest bands inthe north of England - to The Mastersingers whohave appeared on BBC Songsof Praise and recorded at thelegendary Abbey RoadStudios. And you can evenjoin in the fun yourself witha Come & Sing performanceof Vivaldi’s Gloria!

Masterworks ChoraleAround the World, Acrossthe AgesLeeds-based touring choir, directed by TimKnight, with a reputation for fresh, distinctiveand engaging performances. The choir willperform atmospheric choral works byLauridsen, Bach, Jackson, Knight and others.In recent years the choir have performed inVenice, Prague, Paris and New York.

SaxofonieDynamic quartet based near Yorkshowcasing the versatility of thesaxophone. Saxofonie will perform worksincluding Gershwin’s American in Paris,Albéniz’s evocative Sevilla, well-knownjazz standards such as Ain’t Misbehavin’and much more. The concert will alsofeature woodwind solos and works forsaxophone and piano quintet.

Calling all singers! Come along for the day for a workshopand concert performance of Vivaldi’s Gloria and other choralfavourites. The evening concert is open to all.

Howden Minster Community Chorus (director MatthewCollins, organist Paul Thompson) will be joined by soloistsRachel Collins and Ursula Clark.

The MastersingersOutstanding vocal group who have appeared on BBCSongs of Praise and BBC Radio 2 and recorded at AbbeyRoad Studios. The Mastersingers perform uniquearrangements of well-known pieces, from medievalFrench carols and the choral music of Eric Whitacrethrough to contemporary pop songs.

Hull Male Voice ChoirEnoy the thrilling sound of a traditional malevoice choir. Hull Male Voice Choir have recentlyperformed at the Royal Albert Hall and the MeninGate, Belgium. The choir will perform popularand contemporary favourites.

An unforgettable evening of music from one of thenorth of England’s finest brass bands, directed byRichard Wilton. The band performs regularly inprestigious concerts and competitions across theregion. In recognition of Independence Day, theconcert will include popular American works.

Desperate Mezzos & Tim Tozer, pianoA stunning vocal trio who have worked with Glyndebourne andScottish Opera.

Valerie Parker, Rebecca Smith and Victoria Manders-Wood take us onan entertaining journey from eighteenth-century opera and classicalsong to the worlds of musical theatre and Flanders & Swann.

Four Hands, One Grand PianoPianists Amy Butler and Peter Sproston join forces for anhour of favourite works for piano duet.

Amy Butler currently studies with British concert pianistMartin Roscoe and Peter Sproston is an experiencedchamber musician who has performed in concert with theAllegri String Quartet. The centrepiece of their programmewill be Schubert’s beautiful Fantasie in F minor.

Simon Twigge, french horn& John Grundy, pianoAward-winning french horn player Simon Twigge studiedat the Royal Academy of Music and has worked withmany prestigious national orchestras including the BBCSOand Manchester Camerata as well as appearing in solorecital on BBC Radio 3. He is joined by pianist JohnGrundy, who has performed with artists including JackBrymer and Sir Peter Pears.

Simon and John will perform Beethoven’s Horn Sonata inhonour of the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth,as well as music by York Bowen.

Charlotte Rowan, violin& Charlotte Stevenson, pianoViolinist Charlotte Rowan returns to the Minster after herelectrifying performance last year which ended with astanding ovation. Charlotte attended America’s PeabodyConservatory and performs as a recitalist and concertosoloist throughout America and Britain, a recent highlightbeing Bruch’s Violin Concerto with Leeds SymphonyOrchestra. She has been praised for her ‘dazzlingperformances and impassioned mastery of the violin’.

Thomas Bertolotti, cello & Amy Butler, pianoA Cello at the OperaThomas Bertolotti is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Musicand is currently based at La Scala, Milan. He made his concertodebut aged just 19, performing Elgar’s Cello Concerto with theHull Philharmonic Orchestra to critical acclaim. Thomas’sprogramme explores the magical world of opera, including TheMagic Flute, Carmen and The Barber of Seville.

Sharon Nicholson-Skeggs, soprano & Dorcas Leather, pianoAfter the hugely successful performance of her group Opera17at the Minster last year, Sharon Nicholson-Skeggs returns witha much-awaited solo performance of operatic and musicaltheatre favourites. Sharon has starred at venues includingBuxton Opera House, Sheffield’s Crucible and York TheatreRoyal. She specialises in the works of Verdi and Puccini andhas sung the title role in many operas including Aida, Toscaand Turandot.

Chris Hill, flute& Amy Butler, pianoDon’t miss the return visit of brilliant young flautist Chris Hill, athree-time category finalist at BBC Young Musician of the Year.Chris has been principal flute in many leading ensemblesincluding the National Youth Wind Orchestra and Royal Collegeof Music Symphony Orchestra and performed as a soloist at theRoyal Albert Hall. He recently had the honour of performing forPrinces William and Harry at the House of Lords.

James Gaughan, baritone& Matthew Collins, pianoAcclaimed baritone James Gaughan presents a delightfulconcert based around poets of the nineteenth century. Hisprogramme will include works by composers including Elgar,Debussy, Schubert and Schumann.

James is well known as a recital and oratorio soloist acrossthe north of England. Recent concert highlights includeSouthwell Minster, Derby, Lincoln and Wakefield Cathedralsand the National Centre for Early Music.

Introducing... the Howdenshire Music Project

Howdenshire Music Project are the organisers of the Howden Minster ThursdayLunchtime Concert Series.

The project is a newly-formed community organisation whose mission is to bringlive classical music to as wide an audience as possible across Howdenshire andbeyond - free of charge! The project is especially keen to work with young peopleand people of retirement age.

Monday CREAM TEA ORGAN RECITALS

A weekly series of recitals on Howden Minster’s highly regarded three-manualRushworth & Dreaper organ, one of the largest instruments in the area.

Each concert is followed by one of the Minster’s celebrated summer Cream Teas.

You are warmly invited to stay after the concert and enjoy therefreshments, explore the Minster and perhaps even count its famous‘Mousey’ Thompson carved wooden mice.

All concerts begin at 1pm and last approximately one hour. All concerts free admission withretiring collection.

Howden Minster’s 2020 Cream Tea Organ Recitals feature some fabulous talents from Yorkshireand further afield. Each concert features a big screen relay with close up views of the performer.

Particular highlights this year include Thailand’s David Price and the superb Austrian recitalistStefan Donner, who include Howden in their UK summer tours.

The series concludes with Robert Sharpe, Director of Music at York Minster.
