HPE 3PAR Value Through TCO!
Mikael Edwardsson – Storage Solution [email protected]
“Using HPE 3PAR traditionally is like finding oil before the combustion engine was invented….

You are totally unaware of the gold mine you have in your possession!”
Why HPE 3PAR for Flash Infrastructure?
• Technology and ArchitectureConverged Flash: For todays/tomorrows virtual and cloud workloads. Designed to process IO, no matter media (HDD/Flash/Future)
• Availability (Risk Reduction)Proven technology: Over 3 Exabyte's currently deployed, backed by our 6x 9’s availability guarantee
• CostLowest cost per written TB: Benchmarked to show TCO at a1/5th that of Traditional storage arrays
• Performance (Benefit)Higher transaction throughput: Faster business decisions, reduced licence costs and happy users
• ManagementIncreased efficiency: Less manpower needed to mange current and future business data demands
“If you could put it all on flash would you?”
“Let us show you how you can at a lower cost than traditional disk”

This is what the end-user is
requesting. Key to customer
satisfaction!
• How much can I have?
• How quickly can I have it?
• Does it meet performance?
• Does it meet availability?

Key to TCO!
• Capacity I need to buy
• Manpower to manage
• Power & cooling
• Floor space
• Maintenance and support

Flat out:
• Pros: Less cost…
• Cons: Risking customer satisfaction!!

What is stopping the use of Over Subscription?
• Product!• The storage architecture must be orientated around “written” data. To successfully deploy an over
Subscription model you need real-time management of written data. Legacy storage systems can’t do this! HPE 3PAR was designed this way.
• Performance• As you make the array more efficient you increase the data density, or more data on fewer hard
disks! Fewer disk means potentially less performance. Flash technology changes this!!
• Project Procurement• If an array is purchased with 5+ years capacity for a new project it is hard to share this across
multiple projects, who pays when an upgrade is required. HPE 3PAR architecture has changed this thinking.
• People and Process• Storage teams have never deployed this way before. We have 10,000’s of customers and 1,000’s of
PB deployed this way. We have the experience and best practice that no one else does!!

What do we mean by TCO? (let me summarise Gartner)
•Annual Storage Cost per Raw Terabyte (TB)
• “Annual Storage cost” includes costs associated to the
• Operation
• Purchase
• Lease and depreciation
• Maintenance/Support
• Hardware
• Software
• Connectivity
• Disaster recovery
• Occupancy/Facilities
• Personnel to support the storage environment
5 x TCO savings over traditionally deployed storage

Lets consider the TCO and Return on Investment (ROI)
TCO Saving
$504K - $99K ~ $405K
We quote AFA @ $1.5 / useable GB
Cost of AFA = 52Tb x $1.5
~ $80K
Cost of change = 2 x Buy
~ $160K
Total = ~ $240K
$405K - $240K
1st year saving = $165K *
ROI ~7.5 months *

This is about deployment, not just technology
Different deployment models have different TCO
This is about the type of
deployment the technology
enables.!!!!

• 8200 12 x 3.84TB (47TiB, R5 5+1)
• 1.5:1 Deduplication
• 90% less Power and utility
• 90% less Foot Print
• 7-10x Performance (IOPS)
• 20x less latency
Simple Example (random selection from R3T)
What are the takeaways ……
• Present TCO to generate opportunity!!
• Ask how much written data your customer has????
• Offer to benchmark then against HPE’s 3+ Exabyte's worth of customer experience
• Challenge their requests for “Useable” or “Raw” capacity
