How Does This Affect HPs Competition?

HPs stock dived 9.3% in late trading after HPannounced Mark Hurds resignation.

Shares of HP fell 3.1% Friday, following theSeptember 31, 2001 announcement of new

    CEO Leo Apotheker.

More than two-thirds of HP's employeeswould quit tomorrow if they had an equivalent

job offer. Not a raise, not a promotion, simplyan alternative. August 16, 2010 b2bonline

2960 Advantages AutoSmartports automatically detects the type of device connected and

offers a Cisco best-practices configuration to the ports. EnergyWise provisions and monitors the power management of the

devices connected in a network. Time-domain reflectometer (TDR) can diagnose and resolve cabling

issues on copper ports, simplifying troubleshooting. Configuration wizards need just a few inputs to automatically configure

the switch to effectively handle voice, video, and data.

Optional Cisco Redundant Power System (RPS 2300) provides a750W redundant AC power backup source for up to 6 units, improvingfault tolerance and network uptime.

Cisco offers manageability features such as Smartports, AutoQoS, andExpress Setup to help lower long-term operating expenses.

Express Setup and one-click upgrades simplify initial configuration andupgrades once switches are deployed.

Unidirectional link detection (UDLD) and aggressive UDLD detect anddisable unidirectional links to avoid problems such as spanning treeloops.

Using Network Admission Control (NAC), the network will allow a deviceonto the network only if it meets certain criteria, such as having the latestversion of virus software.

    A3600-EI

36x0 10 / 100 and 10/100/1000 Strengths Good port density coverage Feature range allows customer choice Uses same OS as the 88xx, 77xx, and 45xx True power redundancy

36x0 Weaknesses OEMed from Huawei (S3900),

Product support responsibility. Different OS than 42xx, 32xx, 44xx, and 38xx switches.

Compatibility issues with older 3Com switches? Fewer QoS features (WRED, egress shaping). Uses

weighted round robin (WRR), which is a more basic form ofQoS than weighted fair queuing (WFQ).

Cant mix 55xx and 55xxG versions in same stack. PWR version can power up to 19 ports at 15.4W. External

power booster needed for higher port counts. XRN limitations:

Uses ports to link switches, reducing the number of

    usable ports. No master switch.

    3560/3750 Advantages

GOLD (Generic On-Line Diagnostics) quickly and effectively diagnoseshardware issues.

Embedded Event Manager (EEM) allows customized managementcapabilities.

EnergyWise provisions and monitors the power management of thedevices connected in a network.

Cisco Identity Based Networking Services (IBNS) allows users onto thenetwork only if they meet certain criteria.

End-to-end NAC security framework. Advanced security features include Dynamic ARP Inspection, IP source

guard, Private VLANs, and Private VLAN Edge. Advanced QoS features such as rate limiting, committed information rate

(CIR), shaped round robin, and weighted tail drop deliver superiorperformance for data, voice, and video.

Cisco StackWise and StackWise Plus (Catalyst 3750 only) provide aself-healing, redundant architecture in case of failure.

Auto Smartports automatically detects the type of device (for example,an IP phone or access point) connected to the switch and offers a Ciscobest-practices configuration to the ports.

UDLD and aggressive UDLD detect and disable unidirectional links toavoid problems such as spanning tree loops.

SPAN and RSPAN enable remote traffic mirroring for centralizedanalysis, helping lower operating expenses.

S5500-SI/EI Streng ths 24- and 48-port PoE versions All models can support up to 4 10G uplinks 24-port SFP model

S5500-SI/EI Weaknesses 48-port PoE version requires external RPS to fully power all

PoE ports. Relatively new product; limited track record. Clustering, not stacking as defined by Cisco. Can cluster up

    to 32 devices (stacking for EI version). Can cluster with 3Com 5500G, 5500, 4500G, 4200G, 4210.

Cannot cluster with older legacy switches.

3560/3750 Advantages GOLD quickly and effectively diagnoses hardware issues. EEM allows customized management capabilities. EnergyWise provisions and monitors the power management of the

devices connected in a network. Cisco IBNS allows users onto the network only if they meet certain

criteria. End-to-end NAC security framework. Advanced security features include Dynamic ARP Inspection, IP source

guard, Private VLANs, and Private VLAN Edge. Advanced QoS features such as rate limiting, CIR, shaped round robin,

and weighted tail drop deliver superior performance for data, voice, andvideo.

SPAN and RSPAN enable remote traffic mirroring for centralized

analysis, helping lower operating expenses. StackPower option.

    Competing Against the E8200

The 8212zl is first attempt at a core platform (all previous core products were OEMed). It is a 5400 with redundant switchfabrics, PoE+, and PSU.

Strengths: Lifetime warranty. The 8212 has software commonality with the 3500, 5400, and 6200 and modulecommonality with the 5400 Series. Supports wireless controller modules. Premium license software (OSPF) included inbase price.

WeaknessesThe 8212zl consumes >30% more power than an equivalent Catalyst 4500 configuration.

Lacks true high availability: No NSF, single sign-on (failover takes 40 seconds to 2 minutes).Lacks ease-of-use features such as Smartports and AutoQoS.Cannot deliver Class 3 PoE 15.4W per port on all ports with redundancy.Weak STP implementation: No RPVST+ or PVST+.Limited QoS; WRR only. Weak IPv6 (software and Layer 2 only) and multicast implementations.Weak diagnostics and troubleshooting (limited debug/show commands, no GOLD, EEM, OBFL, etc.)Switch fabrics are load sharing; if one fails, performance drops by half; not redundant, single point of failure.

All slots are only half size with a maximum 24 ports per card.No device bundles.
