Introducing theHighland Park Community High School

Hall of Fame

In the spring of 1990, Highland Park Community High School Principal Dr. Gerald Goldenformed a committee to establish a Hall of Fame, recognizing graduates who have exhibitedoutstanding leadership, character, and service to their communities and professions.

The Hall of Fame Committee, chaired (through June 1995) by Darrell Pursiful, now retiredHPCHS Athletic Director and longtime former basketball coach, moved swiftly in the inauguralyear, 1990, to establish selection criteria and operating procedures, set an induction ceremonydate, and invite nominations. Letters were issued, a news release was published in three news-papers, and planning of the ceremony and banquet proceeded. Nominations received before thefirst-year June 1st deadline were considered for the first annual induction. That flurry of first-year activity set the basic pattern.

The Hall is intended to motivate and encourage students to aspire to a higher standard ofachievement and to increase community awareness of the High School and its traditions ofexcellence and success. The Hall of Fame enshrines alumni of the former Highland Park HighSchool on Glendale Avenue (1915 to 1977) as well as Highland Park Community High School,which opened on Woodward Avenue in September 1977. A nominee must have graduated atleast five years prior to consideration.

Anyone may submit a nomination anytime using a form available upon request through theHPCHSHall of Fame Chairman or School District Public Information Office. In accordance withthe Constitution and By-Lawsgoverning the Hall of Fame, nominations received after the Febru-ary 1st deadline each calendar year will be considered in the following calendar year. Nomineesmust respond to a written request for biographical information prior to the Selection Com-mittee meeting to be considered. Nomination neither implies nor guarantees selection. By thevery nature of a hall of fame, induction is not a right, but an honor and privilege.

The Selection Committee includes community, staff, and student members. Committeemembers review a folder for each eligiblenominee containing biographical information submittedby the nominee. Selections are made by secret ballot, tallied immediately. The Selection Committeeis the sole decisionmaker, and its selections are final.

The Hall of Fame is showcased in a central hallway,with an 11 x 14 photo and biographicalhighlights for inductees. In 1990, 15 alumni, representing eight different decades, were inducted. Inaccordance with the plan to induct small groups after the inaugural year, seven alumni wereselected for induction in 1991 and six were selected in each succeeding year except for a year ofhiatus in 2006. In 2010, fivenew honorees chosen from among the 11 eligiblenominees bring totalmembership to 129. (Asixth selection was rescinded due to non-compliance with an essential post-selection requirement.)

The Hall of Fame in Perspective• •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• •• •• "I believe it is important to note the importance of this event to the lives of students •: attending school in this building. The impressive display in the Hall showcase illustrates :• some of the many graduates who have excelled in their careers. But more than that, it •: illustrates that the purpose of the school is to prepare students for a life after high school, :• and that life can be filled with success. •: 'In the most difficult of circumstances, young people with a clear vision of their future :• will achieve against all odds. . . . Let us celebrate the accomplishments of those who we •: honor tonight. But let us always remember that each of us has a responsibility to create the :• belief in each young person that success is achievable, and that a quality education is the •: best vehicle to reach that goal." :• -John Stindt, Assistant Superintendent, •• at the October 23, 1998, Hall oj Fame Induction. •• •• •• •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

THE TRADITIONAL SCHOOL SONG

Highland Park, we hail to thee;

Weare ever true.

Through the years we sing glad praise

To the White and Blue.

Times may change, but memories grow,

Dear old days gone by.

Hail to thee, our honored school;

Wehold our banners high.

Fight on, 0 fight on, HP get that ball,

Knock them for a loss, 0 for a loss.

And when the crowd starts cheering, foes start fearing.

Watch us go!

So cheer, boys, cheer with an H-P,an H-P-Hurrah!

Weare the Polar Bears!

Victory will hold our banners up high;

If we fight on, we're bound to win.
