also preparing for our

next 50 years and

onward. Our university

was born just as Hawaii

was making strides as

a new U.S. state, and

we are committed to

building upon that

strong foundation.

We continue to draw

inspiration from HPUs

former presidents, our

legacy leaders. Though

I will be retiring after completing my five-year term of office

at the end of the 2015-2016 academic year, I am optimistic for

the future we have been creating together with the people of

Hawaii.

This year, our $50 million investment in revitalizing the Aloha

Tower Marketplace (ATM) is coming to life as students move

into the new Waterfront Lofts on August 24, in time for the fall

semester. In addition to student housing, we are expanding

our downtown campus with new offices for the Student

Government Association and Campus Activities Board, a

variety of retail and dining options, multipurpose gathering

spaces, and much more. None of this would have been possible

without supportive partnerships with the state of Hawaii, our

ATM tenants, and the community. Just as the iconic Aloha

Tower once welcomed hundreds of thousands of passenger

ship arrivals in the past, our newly reimagined Aloha Tower

Marketplace will serve as an anchor for HPU and the community

alike, today and as we move forward.

We all owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the HPU ohana.

Students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, trustees and friends

around the worldyou have helped build a great university,

and we could not have achieved this golden anniversary

without you. For me personally, your dedication, talent and

aloha have made my time at this university truly extraordinary

and unforgettable.

We invite you to join us in celebrating the inspiring past,

exhilarating present, and exciting future for our university. Whether

MAUKA, METRO AND MAKAIHAWAII PACIFIC UNIVERSITY CELEBRATES 50 YEARS

As Hawaii Pacific University celebrates its 50th anniversary, we look back on the milestones that have helped to build the diverse and vibrant community that it is today. Join us as we follow the parallel paths of two colleges that laid the foundation for what would become Hawaiis leading private university at the heart of the Pacific.

In the 1960s, two small liberal arts colleges were founded by community members recognizing a need for private education in our newly formed state of Hawaii. In 1992, a picturesque Windward college merged with a downtown university, uniting the strength of two academic institutions committed to being a pillar of higher education in Hawaii.

In 2014, the Oceanic Institute formally merged with the university, bringing additional multi-disciplinary research opportunities to HPU faculty and students. Aloha Tower Marketplaces revitalization will be realized in the fall of 2015. This public-private cooperative includes student housing as well as gathering spaces and retail options for the community.

We are proud to be able to offer our students a traditional college experience through Hawaii Loa Campus, connect them with Hawaiis business center via our downtown campus, and provide innovative learning environments through Oceanic Institute and Aloha Tower Marketplace. Expanding mauka, metro and makai, HPU wraps up its first fifty years with its original core values: searching for new ways to better serve our students by redefining the frontier of higher education.

1965The state of Hawaii grants a charter of incorporation for a nonprofit to be called Hawaii Pacific College to Eureka Forbes, Paul C.T. Loo, Elizabeth W. Kellerman and the Reverend Edmond Walker.

1967Dr. James L. Meader becomes Hawaii Pacific Colleges first president. President Meader, in consultation with community leaders, develops a comprehensive educational program to meet various higher education needs for the state of Hawaii.

1968After Dr. Meader retires, the Board of Trustees elects the Reverend George A. Warmer as Hawaii Pacifics second President. Under President Warmers leadership, the College implements academic programs in the liberal arts and cooperative education.

1964Christian College of the Pacific changes its name to Hawaii Loa College.

1965Dr. Chandler W. Rowe becomes Hawaii Loa Colleges first president.

1963Rev. Harry S. Komuro leads the founding of Christian College of the Pacific, an interdenominational liberal arts college supported by the national offices of four Protestant churches.

The Board of Trustees names philosophy professor Dr. Philip J. Bossert as Hawaii Loa Colleges second president.

1986Dr. Marvin Anderson, coming from a position as chancellor of University of Hawaii at Ma-noa, becomes Hawaii Loa Colleges third president.

Mr. Harold K. L. Castle and Dr. Joseph J. Bevilacqua accept officially the name of Hawaii Loa College.

1966Harold K.L. Castle meets with Dr. Chandler Rowe and donates 132 acres of land in Ka-neohe to Hawaii Loa College.

1971The academic center opens at Hawaii Loa College in January.

1989Former president of Adams State College in Colorado Dr. John Marvel, who had been Provost during Dr. Andersons presidency, becomes Hawaii Loa Colleges fourth president.

1972Hawaii Pacific College graduates seven students in its first commencement class and in the same year establishes a School of Business Administration. Chatt G. Wright becomes the founding dean of Hawaii Pacifics new School of Business Administration.

1973Hawaii Pacific College receives full accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

The following years saw the creation of the English Foundations Program, offering instruction to non-native speakers of English, and the Division of Satellite Programs, administering off-campus instruction on various military installations on Oahu.

1976President Warmer retires and Chatt G. Wright becomes Hawaii Pacific Colleges third president. Under President Wrights leadership, Hawaii Pacific continues to expand and develop throughout the 1980s.

1986Hawaii Pacific College launches its first graduate program, the Master of Business Administration.

1970 u Campuses and academic programs flourish, paving the way for a vibrant international learning community.

1992Hawaii Loa College merges with Hawaii Pacific University. This historic merger brings together the strength of two academically diverse institutions, and helps to expand Hawaii Pacific Universitys role as a leader in higher education for the state of Hawaii and the Pacific Basin.

1990-2000s u

1990Former dean of the University of Denver Dr. Dwight M. Smith becomes Hawaii Loa Colleges fifth president. Dr. Smith was also a member of the University Senate of the United Methodist Church.

1990Hawaii Pacific College becomes Hawaii Pacific University.

In a historic merger, two academically strong institutions unite, enriching Hawaii Pacific Universitys role in the state and the Pacific Basin.


2011Hawaii Pacific Universitys Board of Trustees names Dr. Geoffrey Bannister as HPUs fourth president.

2012Governor Neil Abercrombie signs a special purpose revenue bond issued by the state legislature for Hawaii Pacific University. These funds will help HPU raise as much as $120 million for critical capital projects at its three locations around Oahu.

2014HPU completes the merger to bring Oceanic Institute formally into the university.

HPU holds the blessing and groundbreaking for the revitalization of Aloha Tower Marketplace.

The Hall of Fame was established in 2011 to recognize those who have played significant

roles in HPU Athletics success, honoring the talented powerhouses who dominated on

and off the playing field. As we look forward to our 50th anniversary, we celebrate these

student-athletes, coaches and support personnel for their dedication and team spirit

throughout the years!

20111 BENNY AGBAYANI (BA 03) is HPUs only baseball first-

team All-American. He was named to HPUs baseball team in 1993, and played with the New York Mets in the World Series.

Womens volleyball head coach 2 TITA AHUNA won two NCAA National Championships. She was named NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year after a perfect season in 2000.

3 JRGEN MALBECK was the 1997 NAIA Player of the Year and two-time first-team All-American in 1996 and 1997. He played professionally in his native Germany.

4 SUSANNE SCHOALES (BSBA 00) holds HPUs softball record for innings pitched, and set a school record of 12 strike-outs against Brigham Young University-Hawaii. She had the most wins in a career until 2010.

5 LLEWELLYN SMALLEY (BA 00) was a two-time basketball All-American in 1997 and 1998. He was named Hawaii Intercollegiate Athletic Conference MVP and Far West Region MVP in 1998.

20126 GABRIELA ARTIGAS (MSIS 92) was the volleyball All-

Tournament National Championship Team MVP in 1990. She was a three-time NAIA All-American and four-time All-District. She was team captain for four years, returning as head coach in 1994-1995.

7 NINA CHRISTENSEN (MBA 05) was a three-time All-American and four-time All-Region cross country runner. She won seven races in Hawaii during her time at HPU, and later earned several medals at the Danish Championships.

8 MIKAEL MAATTA (MBA 05) was a seven-time All-American in singles and doubles. He led HPU to the NCAA National Championship finals in 2001 and 2003, and was in top five rankings from 2001-2003.

Legendary softball coach 9 HOWARD OKITA joined Hawaii Loa College as head softball coach in 1988, and was named NAIA softball Coach of the Year in 1991. He remained at HPU as a key member of staff until 2013.

Mens basketball head coach 10 TONY SELLITTO won NAIA National Championships in 1993 and was named 1992-1993 NAIA National Coach of the Year. He led HPU to the NAIA National Championship tournament seven times and the NCAA tournament once.


2013Two-time All-American infielder 11 LES AKEO JR. (BSBA 86) won District 2 MVP in 1985 and District 29 MVP in 1986. He is in the all-time top six greatest players in 12 statistical categories.

12 TODD IACOVELLI (MBA) was a first-team Mens Cross Country All-American, and the first Hawaii-born American runner to represent HPU in the NCAA Championships. He won the PacWest Conference meet and the NCAA West Regional.

13 ERIK SANDBLOM (MSIS 01) was a five-time All-American in singles and doubles. He helped bring HPU from an NAIA to an NCAA Division II team. He consistently ranked in the top ten nationally.

14 DEBBIE [ELLIOTT] SANTANNA (BSBA 00) was an All-American player selected to the NCAA Division II National Championship All-Tournament Team in 1998 and 2000. Among other records and titles, she was named National Player of the Year by Volleyball Magazine in 2000.

Three-time All-American 15 NIA TUITELE (BA 01) was part of HPU Volleyballs undefeated run in 2000. She was named the Honolulu Quarterback Clubs Sportswoman of the Month in Nov. 2000.

201416 LISA BLOMME (BS 02) was a two-time All-American, finishing 7th at the NCAA National Cross Country Championships in 2000 and 12th in 2001. She was also on the womens tennis team which finished 12th nationally in 2001.

Volleyball coach 17 NAHAKU BROWN brought the team to the 1990 NAIA National Championship. She was Honolulu Quarterback Clubs Sportswoman of the Year and Russell NAIA Coach of the Year in 1990.

18 NEIL EVERETT MORFITT is the longest-tenured Sports Information Director in HPUs history. He was in charge of HPU sports publications, statistics and media relations for 15 years before joining ESPN as an anchor in 2000.

Coached by fellow Hall of Famer Tony Sellitto, the 19 1992-1993 MENS BASKETBALL TEAM won Hawaiis first and only NAIA National Championship in 1993 despite injuries.

ALOHA TOWER MARKETPLACEPREPARING FOR MOVE-IN DAY

In June 2014, Hawaii Pacific University broke ground, launching the revitalization of Aloha Tower Marketplace (ATM). Fast forward a year, Aloha Tower Marketplaces construction timeline remains on schedule with students moving into the Waterfront

Lofts on Aug. 24. HPUs $50 million project will house 278 students in 74 loft-style rooms on the second floor of the Marketplace. For more ATM updates, including news clips and additional pictures, visit: www.hpu.edu/kanalima

College of Business Moving HPU has acquired a dedicated space in Pioneer Plaza for the College of Business. Home to the states largest professional MBA program and ranked No. 18 by TheBestSchools.org as one of the strongest online MBA programs in the U.S., the College of Business move illustrates its continuing commitment to being a part of Honolulus business community and placing its students in close physical and intellectual proximity to Hawaiis business leaders. The College looks forward to moving down Fort Street Mall nearer to the Aloha Tower Marketplace within the next academic year.

New College LaunchesThe College of Extended and Interdisciplinary Education, formerly known as the Military Campus Programs, is becoming a full academic college, aiming to serve military and civilian non-traditional students. Through the colleges new and retooled programs in Homeland Security, Criminal Justice, Health Professions and more, students can achieve their educational and professional goals. The college also offers non-credit professional development courses and certificates.

A team of HPU students placed sixth in the nation at the 2015 National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) finals in Las Vegas this June, beating more than 150 universities. The team produced a $60 million national advertising campaign

for Pizza Hut, this years NSAC client. Their Trust Your APPetite, #trustthehut campaign received accolades from a panel of judges comprised of industry experts and client executives.

Programming Director WelcomedHPU Programming and Marketing Director for the Aloha Tower Marketplace Stephanie Blakeman (BA) shows one of the Waterfront Lofts kitchenettes. As the ATM Programming and Marketing Director, Blakeman will be the go-to person for Aloha Tower Marketplace space management and marketing.

The College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CNHS), soon to be the College of Health and Society, participated in and hosted several events in the past school year highlighting the importance of civic engagement. CNHS volunteered in the Triennial Aircraft Disaster Exercise with over 170 students and faculty, hosted week-long multidisciplinary activities for homelessness awareness, planned panel discussions on various pressing health issues, and held poster sessions presenting students work done with

community agencies around Oahu. The College has also developed a strategic plan for students in its professional programs to engage with community partners and develop an understanding of local, national and international community health. Several new educational programs will also be launched within the next three years, including the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner program, Master of Public Health, and Doctor of Nursing Practice, HPUs first doctoral program.

In June 2015, President Geoffrey Bannister announced his retirement from Hawaii Pacific University at the end of the 2015-2016 academic year.

As the fourth president in HPUs history, President Bannister has steered strategic plans that will immensely improve the quality of the university. Such plans included the redevelopment of Aloha Tower, master plans to renovate the campuses, and the merging of HPU with Oceanic Institute.

President Bannister expressed how grateful he was to have had an extraordinary opportunity to work for the success of a great university and is thrilled that his final year will be spent celebrating the achievements of HPU through the 50th anniversary.

COLLEGE OF NURSING AND HEALTH SCIENCES PROACTIVE IN COMMUNITY President Bannister Announces Retirement

The HPU Athletics Department celebrated two championships during the 2014-2015 school year. The Womens Basketball and Mens Tennis teams both captured the Pacific West Conference championship.

The Womens Basketball Team put together the best season in school history and rewrote the record books.

The 25-5 Sharks were fun to watch, leading the nation in scoring average at 82.3 points per game. HPU dominated the PacWest with a record of 18-2, winning the PacWest Tournament. Womens Basketball advanced to the West Regional for the second time in school history and was ranked in the Top 25 for the first time.

Mens Tennis streak of national dominance continued with a 24-1 record, a trip to the national final, a No. 1 ranking, and a third consecutive PacWest Championship. The Sharks defeated 12 nationally-ranked teams, including two wins over defending national champion West Florida. The Sharks have been riding a 37-match regular season winning streak for over two years.

HONORING A HISTORY ENTHUSIAST HPU was granted a $15,400 gift from Carol Mon Lee toward the Jerry H. Bentley World History Workshop for Social Studies Teachers. This workshop, named in honor of Carols late husband, provides social studies teachers in Hawaii with an opportunity to learn more about teaching world history.

It also connects HPU with the wider educational community in Hawaii, said Dr. Jon Davidann, professor of history at HPU and administrative director of the workshop. Carol has been a great partner in planning the workshop. She has given excellent feedback and suggestions and has been incredibly supportive. A big mahalo to Carol!

Visitors will be introduced to the newly reimagined Aloha Tower Marketplacethrough an interactive touch-screen experience, thanksto Toshiba Hawaiis recent donation of a state-of-the-art digital display unit and programming assistance valued at $33,000. Along with being recognized for their advanced technologies and award-winning service, Toshiba Hawaii is also an avid supporter of charities and other non-profit organizations.

Shubheksha Subu Rana (MSW 10) and Lachhindra Lachu Maharjan (MSW 10) are actively organizing relief efforts in Nepal in response to the devastating earthquakes in April and May. With teams of doctors, nurses, architects, students, and other volunteers, Rana and Maharjan are bringing help to remote

rural areas. Their teams have provided medical aid, food, water and shelter to more than 1,000 people and counting. In May, they organized their first mobile health camp in Paanchkhal, a village three hours away from Kathmandu, Nepal. In addition to their independent activism, they work with several NGOs in

Nepal including the SAATH organization, Nepal Red Cross Society, and Save the Childrens Nepal Earthquake Relief. Rana and Maharjan are currently raising funds for supplies and their continued relief efforts for earthquake victims.

HPU students joined the Rotary Club of Honolulu in March for a service trip to build Bayon School in the rural village of Angkor Krau near Siem Reap, Cambodia. Their group worked alongside local skilled craftsmen at the peak of the onsite construction job. This international project was begun by a Japanese NGO, and involved other groups including Honolulus Nan, Inc. and the Rotary Clubs of Kyoto, Tokyo-Shimbashi and Taipei among others.

Oceanic Institute provided 40,000 native striped mullet as part of an effort to restock fishponds and revitalize traditional Hawaiian methods of raising fish in the 21st century. The Nature Conservancy and Conservation International contributed over $500,000 to the effort, which also involved partners Ulupono Initiative, Castle Foundation, Oceanic Institute, and the fishponds of Paepae o Heeia, Mlama Loko Ea, and Hui o Kuap. Together, they aim to create a sustainable market in the local community.

FIRST LADY OF HAWAII RECEIVES FELLOW OF THE PACIFIC AWARD AT SPRING COMMENCEMENT CEREMONYHawaii Pacific University held its 84th commencement at the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena on May 14, 2015. Delivering the keynote address was Dawn Amano-Ige, the first lady of the state of Hawaii. In recognition of her unwavering commitment to the community and ideals of higher education, she was presented the Fellow of the Pacific Award. The award, which has been conferred upon 85 individuals since 1973, honors outstanding

community leaders for contributions to Hawaii, the Pacific Rim and the University.

The class of Spring 2015 included more than 800 graduates from around the world receiving associate, bachelor and master degrees. The valedictory speakers representing their fellow graduates were Zachary Drury (BSN 15), Mojgan Busick (BS 15) and Mark Brians (MA 15).

HPU alumni professionals met with current students and fellow alumni who were interested in pursuing careers in their desired fields. More than 40 alumni, juniors and seniors spent their lunch time on April 8 with alumni who reminisced

about their HPU days as well as gave insight in various career fields including Information and Technology, Hospitality and Tourism Management, and Marketing and Communication.

In 2003, former HPU student Stefan Dahlkvist (BA) and his business partners, fellow HPU alumnus Simen Staalnacke (BSBA 01) and Peder Brresen, launched the Norwegian clothing brand called Moods of Norway. Stefan shared that his idea for Moods of Norway came while he was in Hawaii buying vintage Hawaiian shirts. Due to their time in Hawaii and the fact that Norwegian fashion brands were nearly nonexistent, Stefan and Simen were inspired to create the first Norwegian fashion with international flair. We wanted to create a lifestyle brand that combined the exotic culture of Norway mixed with international trends different clothes for different moods, all with a twist of the Norwegian heritage, says Stefan.

Moods of Norway, which can be described as artsy and abstract, grew rapidly throughout Norway in 2009. With the growth in popularity came an increase in designing for different fields, including the official uniforms for the Norwegian teams in the 2014 Winter Olympics and the Norwegian Air

Shuttle crew. In February of this year, the three founders moved to Los Angeles to help further expand the brand. The three recently received the Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce Trade Award, where they had lunch with the king and queen of Norway. Both Stefan and Simen hope to return to Hawaii soon.

1986Ryozo Ariyoshi (BSBA) is an international real estate investment adviser for NAI ChaneyBrooks. He helps to further expand the Honolulu-based companys reach into Japan, Korea, Taiwan and other Asian markets.

1987Dayang Dee M. Abang Haji Zain (BSBA) was featured in the book Sarawak Women in Volunteerism: Caring Hearts, Touching Lives. The book was released on Kuchings Womens Day on Sept. 27, 2014, honoring women volunteers. 1

1991Peter Melcher (BA) was recently appointed from associate to full professor by the Board of Trustees at Ithaca College in New York. Peter is a professor in the schools Department of Biology.

1993 Sophia Rose [Phillips] Arjana (BA) published her first book entitled Muslims in the Western Imagination. The book explores the understudied topic of imaginary Muslim monsters and explains how these creatures aid in the dehumanization of the Muslim other.

Brigadier General Arthur Joe Logan (BA) was confirmed as the Department of Defense adjutant general on Jan. 1,

2015. He has over 30 years of military and law enforcement experience and served as director of operations for the Hawaii Army National Guard since 2013. Arthur has also served as chief of staff of Hawaii National Guard and chief of staff of Hawaii Air National Guard. 2

1998Loren Dyck (MBA) received the 2015 Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of La Verne. She is an assistant professor of management in the College of Business and Public Management.

2000Erland Odd (MSIS) was appointed vice president of ecommerce and digital strategy at Castle Resorts & Hotels. In his new position, Erland will be responsible for managing all online sales and marketing initiatives for websites under the companys brand.

2001 Steven Barthel (BSBA) earned the globally preferred Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) credential from the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, the worlds largest anti-fraud organization. CFEs examine data and records to detect and trace fraudulent transactions, and write investigation reports among other duties. Steven is a senior financial analyst with the Walt Disney Company in Orlando and leads

operational audit teams in Florida and California. 3

Edward J. Calvo (MA) was selected for Guam Business Magazines 40 Under 40 list. Edward has produced more than 10 major music concerts and fairs, more than 30 sporting events, and eight successful comedy shows.

Kiwi Camara (BS) is CEO of CS Disco Inc., a legal technology company specializing in ediscovery, document review and processing technology for law firms.

2002 Hiro Fujita (BSBA), who is currently living in Japan, did a TEDxTokyo talk presentation concerning amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrigs disease. Additionally, Hiro founded the END ALS Association in 2012.

Charlene Robles (MBA) was named Catholic Charities Hawaiis neighbor island community administrator. Previously, Charlene was the director of early intervention where she managed operations and contracts for six programs across Oahu, Kauaii and Hawaii Island.

Salam Sam Rasoul (MBA) won a special election and is a member of the Virginia General Assembly (House of Delegates) representing District 11 (Roanoke). He also runs Envigor, a healthcare consulting firm, and previously served as CFO and COO of Kissito Healthcare International.

2004Bradley Gillis (BSBA) is a successful commercial real estate broker and entrepreneur in Salisbury, MD. He currently serves as senior advisor for Sperry Van Ness/Miller Commercial Real Estate and holds the industrys most prestigious designation, Certified Commercial Investment Member.

Cheryl Price (MBA) was promoted by Hawaiian Airlines to director of in-flight initiatives. Cheryl develops and

implements strategic initiatives that will elevate Hawaiian Airlines in-flight service.

Shannon Wiggins (BSBA) serves as corporate communications manager of Dunhill, Hawaiis top professional search firm. Dunhill is a family-owned firm that was started by Shannons mother, Nadine Stollenmaier. Dunhill has been awarded Pacific Business News Fastest 50 Growing Companies in Hawaii and Top 25 Woman-Owned Business in Hawaii.

2005 Michelle Kramer (BA) was selected for Guam Business Magazines 40 Under 40 list. In addition to growing her familys Marshall Islands-based wholesale and shipping business in Guam, she manages the companys Guam and NMI real estate holdings. Michelle was accepted into the first Marianas Pacific Century Fellowship program, based on a prestigious leadership and public service initiative started by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

2006 Virginia Dickman-Lopez (MBA, BSBA 05) and her husband Robert Dickman-Lopez (BA) welcomed their son, Oliver Dickman-Lopez, to the world on May 28, 2015 in Chicago. 5

Rebecca Ford (BA) and Harry Buerkle (BA) were married on Sept. 27, 2014, in Malibu, Calif. They honeymooned in the Cook Islands in November. Rebecca works at The Hollywood Reporter as a film reporter while Harry works as a filmmaker. 6

Tim Pfingsten (MA) was named the Queens Health Systems director of organizational development and recruitment. His responsibilities include creating and implementing programs for employee development, building organizational and leadership strength, and creating an engaged learning culture.

2007Scott Nolan Smith (BA) joined the newly opened Washington, D.C., office of Portland Communications Ltd., a London-based political consultancy and public relations agency. As associate director, he is in charge of advising clients on media and digital engagement strategy, international affairs, diplomatic communications and digital transformation.

2008Shaholly Ayers (BA) was selected by Nordstrom in 2014 for their National Anniversary Catalog that was shot in New York City. Despite being born with a partial right arm, Shaholly has not let her disability stop her from reaching her dreams. She also volunteers as a basketball coach for the Special Olympics and has done volunteer work at Shriners Hospital.

Dr. Juan Carlos Gachet (MBA) published his second book entitled Ecuador and the United States: Free Trade Agreement in 2014. The book focuses on how free trade between different countries generates employment, attracts foreign and local investment, and creates technological development which leads to industrial progress.

Zack Parnell (BSBA) and Jonah Hobson (MBA 11) are the president and marketing manager of Industrial Training International, respectively. Both were on HPUs varsity basketball team from 2007-2009. The two have contributed to the companys 15 percent average annual growth in revenue since 2009. 8

2009Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (BSBA) married Abraham Williams in April. The two were married in Kahaluu with the ceremony performed by Hindu priest Pandit Vinod Dave.

Department of Communication Professor Natalie Gauvin (MA) and her husband Charles Gauvin (MBA 15) welcomed their second son, Alexander, to their family on May 19, 2015 in Honolulu. 9

Samantha Kate Matthews (BS) is the youngest female M.D. in the United States. After graduating from HPU at age 19, Samantha graduated from Ross University in 2014 with her M.D.

2010In addition to continuing to provide website development through Givens & Associates, LLC, Melvin Givens (MA) joined the Future of Flight Foundation in Seattle as the membership and events coordinator in March.

Frances Frannie Nilsen (MSMS) co-authored Use of indicator chemicals to characterize the plastic fragments ingested by Laysan albatross in the Marine Pollution Bulletin with Brenda Jensen, Ph.D., HPU associate professor of biology. The article demonstrates a new analytical method for identifying the resin type of plastic fragments that are ingested by Laysan albatross and other seabirds.

Katie Vanes (MA) was named the public relations and social media manager at the Sheraton Kona Resort at Keauhou Bay.

2011Dean Kline (MSMS, BS 08), an Oceanic Institute of HPU research assistant, published Development of intensive copepod culture technology for Parvocalanus crassirostris: Optimizing adult density in the journal Aquaculture. The article discusses work done to allow higher culture densities and increasing nauplii production for in-house larval rearing research.

Savannah Paras (MBA), along with her mother, took part in the Hawaii Agricultural Foundations Localicious Hawaii campaign. As proprietors of the Indian eatery Gourmet Lani, Savannah and her mother teamed up with more than 126 restaurants during the month of

March to raise funds for an agricultural education program for public schools.

2012 Kerry Foltz (MSMS) co-authored Cytochrome P4501A1 expression in blubber biopsies of endangered false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens) and nine other odontocete species in Hawaiian waters, an article that was published in Ecotoxicology, with Brenda Jensen, Ph.D., HPU associate professor of biology. The article demonstrates contaminant-related toxic responses in blood vessels in blubber biopsies from 10 species of Hawaiian cetaceans, providing evidence that Hawaiian cetaceans, and the endangered Hawaiian insular stock of false killer whales in particular, are experiencing contaminant-related stress.

Jason Oshiro (MBA) and Bettina Mehnert (MBA 03) attended the January-March 15 issue launch event of Pacific Edge, owned by fellow alumna Naomi Hazelton-Giambrone (MA 05). Bettina was one of five Leaders in Architecture on the cover of the magazine while Jason was a featured professional in the Young Pros section. 10

Former HPU basketball player Fran Urli was signed to play professional basketball in the UK for the Durham Wildcats in Oct. 2014. He previously played for the Spanish league.

2013Nancy Banh (BS) has been accepted into the Doctorate of Nursing program at University of Hawaii at Ma-noa and will specialize as a family nurse practitioner. Previously, she worked for the American

Lung Association in Hawaii for nearly two years, leading national programs at the community and statewide levels. While at HPU, Nancy volunteered as an officer for the Health Promotion and Wellness Association and engaged in a successful national campaign to reduce homelessness in urban Honolulu and West Oahu. 11

US Army retiree John Hansen (MADMS), along with Carlos Juarez, Ph.D., HPU professor of political science, and master of arts in diplomacy and military studies student Lt. Wendy Marotta discussed on Hawaii Public Radio how the war on terror has fundamentally changed since 9/11.

Shannon Lyday (MSIS) published her first thesis chapter entitled Shearwaters as ecosystem indicators: Towards fishery-independent metrics of fish abundance in the California Current in a special issue of the Journal of Marine Systems, with co-authors Lisa Ballance (NOAA Fisheries), HPU Associate Professor of Marine Science David Field, Ph.D., and HPU Associate Professor of Oceanography David Hyrenbach, Ph.D.

Michelle Quirk (BS) is now the sales manager for new business development at the Westin Maui Resort & Spa. She is responsible for prospecting group leads and corporate accounts for the resort. 12

Maria Sabio (MBA) was promoted to operations manager for the Oahu division of RevoluSun, Hawaiis leading provider of residential and commercial solar systems. Maria manages the

efficient flow of the operations department to maximize output and improve productivity.

Aris Zikos (MSMS), HPU faculty member Keith Korsmeyer, and colleagues at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology published in Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology. Their article, Effects of salinity on metabolic rate and branchial expression of genes involved in ion transport and metabolism in Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus, illustrates the study on an important aquaculture fish.

2014 Founder and CEO of Nella Media Group Jason Cutinella (MA) and his team received two MAGGIE awards at the Western Publishing Association MAGGIE Awards Banquet, as well as two Pele Gold Regional ADDY Awards at the American Advertising Federation District 13 awards ceremony.

Mitch Gildea (MADMS) had his thesis published by the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies. His thesis, State water resource competition and the resulting consequences of diminished water supply, looks at examples of states that successfully managed to share water resources despite tense relations (India, Pakistan and the Indus River) to see if there were lessons that could assist in resolving other disputes over water (the Mekong Delta).

Miina Huotari (BA) and Danika Mencin (MADMS), along with two current HPU students, were selected as part of the 2014-2015 cohort for the Hawaii Asia-Pacific Affairs Leadership Program (HAIPAL). HAIPAL provides undergraduates, graduate students and young professionals with the opportunity to learn about Asia-Pacific international affairs from leading senior and emerging policy experts affiliated with the Pacific Forum CSIS.

Lia Jamerson (MA) is developing her new company, LJ Interior Designs, along with focusing attention on becoming a licensed professional child and family therapist.

Michelle Jamieson (MA) is the new corporate director of marketing communications international for Centara Hotels & Resorts in Bangkok. The company now has six brands and is located throughout Thailand as well as in Bali, Vietnam, Maldives and Sri Lanka, with projects in Doha and Turkey among others.

Sarah Lee (BS) is now the University Relations Coordinator at HPUs University Relations Office as of March.

Britney Unoki (BA) became the new multimedia specialist and graphic design assistant for Olomana Loomis ISC in January. Prior to joining the agency, she produced creative web content for HPUs University Relations office and helped with event planning and online media promotion management for the Hawaiian Humane Society. 13
