In the Next Chapter, the museum lights up, tier by tier, level by level

In conjunction with its 35th anniversary, Taipei Fine Arts Museum opens its doors to welcome you back into its embrace and become reacquainted with its halls tier by tier, level by level. This bright and sunny August, the second event of the museum's opening will invite visitors to the halls on level two, where the theme of the exhibition is the history of art. The featured artist is none other than one of most iconic figures in Taiwan's contemporary art history, Hsia Yan. HSIA YAN: Journey to Art , a collection of works covering different stages of his life and career, brings art fans on a journey through time to witness for themselves the evolution of Hsia's works over the course of more than half a century, from the 1960s to the current day.Come end of September, level three of the museum will be reopened, with the third wave of events here at TFAM! René Magritte, The Revealing Image: Photos and Films is an exhibition of the oeuvre of René Magritte, Belgian surrealist artist. The exhibited works, a collection of photographs and moving pictures, were discovered 10 years after the artist’s death and curated in Europe. These visual artworks invite one to delve deeper into Magritte's world and unearth his secret sources of creative motivation and philosophy. The gallery on level three consists of the brand new Space C, newly designed with an emphasis on a panoramic view set in an open space. Here, visitors can relax both their paces and their mind to engage in contemplation, learning, and interaction. Displayed within the same venue is Inside X-site , an exhibition featuring selected works from Program X-site, which is held in the plaza and currently in its 5th year.Cross Through the Magical Mirror, and Enter a New World ! , a 3-act exhibition put together as part of the museum's re-opening, is a special project that invites visitors to immerse themselves in the displays. The exhibition will take place in the lobby, the two wings of the gallery, and the plaza. Act 1, "weee", invites us to embark on our journey through the human realm, while Act 2 "Personhood Prism" explores our digital “personhoods” in this world of machines. Last but not least, Act 3 "The Yod" is set in a real landscaped garden and establishes a connection with the natural world. Taking place in the outdoor plaza, the exhibition will form part of the third wave of the museum's opening celebrations in September, and create a romantic night for the residents of Taipei in conjunction with Nuit Blanche Taipei on October 6.As summer turns into fall, TFAM will not only see a new lease of life, but also invite you to be part of the journey. The Next Chapter is not just for the museum, but also for our shared exploration of the arts.

Born in 1932, the modern artist Hsia Yan paints “fuzzy” figures to transcend life's bitterness. Over the course of his long and varied career, Hsia has pursued a wide range of visual languages. He blends seriousness and play into his works to create stories of others that suggest his own life. Admiring his paintings, one can sense their profound implications. Subject matter in Hsia's work includes folk religion, myths, allegories, and legendary figures. By creating rushing figures composed of quivering lines, he intends to suggest allegorical meanings. With his fuzzy people, he dispenses with the meanings or likenesses originally associated with specific objects and instead explores the restlessness and alienation of life in the urban jungle. Variations in blurry brush strokes seem to form objects but actually do not, yet the clear momentum of his figures demonstrates the artist's clever pictorial language.

“Cross through the Magical Mirror, and Enter a New World!” is divided into three domains. The first domain “weee” attempts to initiate a new system, which people put in motion as they interact. And through radical disassembly, it seeks to redefine, or undefine, the operating principles of the Human Realm. The “Machine Realm” is the second domain of the exhibition. Personhood Prism Act 2: The Machine Realm, “Personhood Prism” from Shih Yi-shan attempts to classify, analyze and reflect on the position of human beings in this contemporary society, which is centered on technology and industry: When everything human is completely and thoroughly transformed by machines, everything – be it individuals, communities, politics, the economy, morals or ethics – is impacted and altered. This is a profound meditation on how human beings must confront their own existence at the current moment. The exhibition comes to a resolution with “The Realm of Nature”- a flower garden in the Museum plaza. Here the artist Chen Hui-chao will create a floral sea formed by the “The Yod”, the garden cosmos. With astral symbols that arise from cosmic energy, the artist fills the venue with an atmosphere of mystery, and employing an almost visceral yet quite rational logic, she sculpts a picturesque garden for us to linger in. The three exhibitions will begin on July 21, Aug. 11, and Sept. 29, respectively.* There will be performances and educational programs for the respective acts of the 3-part exhibition. For more detailed information, please visit the TFAM website.

異星系The Alien Galaxy

Lee, Tzu-hsun’s work is mainly rooted in the individual’s inner perceptions and experiences toward life, and in-presenting the unseen qualities of the world through re-imagination. He is adept at expressing the illusionary senses of the human soul toward the world through methods of maneuvering extreme physical realities. The contrast between the two constitutes the unique appeal of his works. The Alien Galaxy exhibits Lee, Tzu-hsun’s Maze Theater, Glass Beads Game, and the recent Sequential Aircraft dated 1998-2013. The exhibition will also showcase sketches of Maze Theater and smaller scale pieces.

(Charleroi Museum of Photography)

This exhibition is curated by the director of Charleroi Museum of Photography, Xavier Canonne, aiming at revealing the true colors of René Magritte in his daily life and creative process, through photographic prints and home video. These two-dimensional images shot between 1914 and 1967 are mostly from private collections without original negatives, discovered approximately 10 years after the artist’s death. The photographs in exhibition here serve as some unique family albums, from the perspective of art history research, unlike documents in the artist’s archives or picture collections of his friends. These images provide an alternative way to explore Magritte’s creative motivation as well as the sense of his works, at the same time they shed light on related development of surrealism in Belgium. Magritte, as ever, is devoted to his paintings, and never for once regards himself as a “photographer”. As historical documents, these images demonstrate the role that photography plays for Magritte and his paintings.

Audience engagement is a highly regarded issue of the museum’s operation plan. After the reopening in 2018, “Space C,” which was originally “Space 209” in Gallery 209, is relocated to the corridor on 3F. The 3F corridor’s unique open and fluid properties offer visitors a comprehensive view to the entire museum, so that they can feel the penetrability and enjoy the open view of the areas around the lobby of the museum. In the future, this area will continue to realize Space C’s vision of “facilitating proactive learning and encouraging diverse arts engagement,” and will be used as the base of operation for the development of various experimental thematic projects, providing visiting audience a space for innovative contemplation, peace of mind, interaction and exchange, and engagement and creation. In “Inside X-Site 2014-2018", past submissions will be taken and remixed regardless of submission year and theme, then shown to the public through three different creative perspectives. There will be a special exhibition area for the five first-place winning projects depicting the memories of those five summers where the public interacted with the installations in the square. Moreover, the creative minds behind the submissions will be invited to share the moment of inspiration behind their projects in handwritten manuscripts.

The essence of this exhibition is “books”, but this isn’t a book fair. Instead, this exhibition examines “how artists think of books” through related activities, such as reading, writing, binding, publishing, preserving, and categorizing. The exhibition is named as “Cross-Domain Reading & Writing: A Biblio-ecology in Art ” to illustrate the participating artists’ interdisciplinary practices of art and imply the cross-domain solutions in the IT industry. This exhibition recruits eleven artists, including Hongjohn Lin, Kuang-Yi Chen, Duncan Mountford, Yung-Shan Tsou, Man-Nung Chou, Chih-Chung Chang, Shiau-Peng Chen, Chien Chi, Chia-Wei Hsu, Margot Guillemot, and Chieh-Sen Chiu. These artists engage in reading and researching, writing and bookmaking, and book knowledge schemes to create their works of art.

Modeled after the architectural concepts of Taipei Fine Arts Museum, this exhibit encompassing the highly realistic virtual office and construction work site of an architect invites viewers to walk around the premises, read, play games, design, or personally engage in the tasks at hand as if one were taking part in the building process from conceptualization to completion. Under the theme of “The Construction of a Public Building,” visitors are able to experience a day in the life of an architect, take part in the abstract concept design process, and learn how these concepts are materialized in the real world through repetitive and meticulous planning and testing.

Kuang-Yi Chen’s 24-hr Soapbox Speech broadens our horizons by several impromptu speeches. She invites several speakers, including the participating artists in this exhibition, to talk about books for one hour.

The framework of knowledge influences the genres into which books are divided, and book genres in turn limit the framework of knowledge, curatorial discourse will appear in an unexpected way in this exhibition. Therefore, two curators have planned two talks on the theme of failure in exhibitions. One talk will focus on the curators and the other on the artists, discussing the rarely talked about, the never shown side of failure in the gallery during the creative and curatorial process.

Cross-Domain Reading & Writing" Workshops

Bookplates date from the 15th century. People used printmaking methods to add these marks of ownership onto everything from files in the national archives to personal hand-drawn drafts of cradles. Different printmaking methods will have their own "feel" through a combination of the unique grain each method produces, the image on the plate, and the material the image is printed on. The event invites the public to use the "eslite Green" stamps for Cross-Domain Reading and Writing exhibition available on-site to print a limited edition bookplate on their treasured books, and experience how people in the old days expressed their love towards their own books.

* 參加對象 : 高中以上 ( 限 10 人 ) Intended audience: High school and above (up to 10 persons per lecture)* 參加方式 : 絹版、金屬鋅版二種版各一場,單場 1 小時。 Participation: 1 session each for silk screen printing and metal zinc plate printing. Each session lasts for 1 hour. For more information on registration, please visit the TFAM official website.

Overhead projectors are part of memories of school life for many of us, but they have since been replaced with their digital counterparts. However, the unique principle behind how these projectors work is still very much alive today when it comes to real-time performances such as sand painting. The aim of this workshop is to allow participants to manipulate transparent tanks, raster animation, and objects with special designs to create interesting and dazzling tricks of light with just a few waves of their fingers.

Intended audience: All audiences are welcome.

Taipei Fine Arts Museum Collection Highlights

Sanctuary

Upon the museum's 35th anniversary, researchers who work at the museum are invited to participate in the selection and curation of Collection Highlights . Not only will some new art works be brought into what is considered classic within the museum's collection, contemporary works of excellence that have entered the collection within the past 10 years will have an opportunity to be made known to the public; a total of 175 works by 166 artists has been selected.(The English edition will be pulished in December 2018. )

The art he creates also forms a space, where a platform is created by the artist for people to meet and interact and for the museum to engage in more interactions with the public on a wide array of contemporary issues. In addition to feeling physically protected, the experience provided by the artwork also prompts the participants to contemplate on the meaning behind spiritual sanctuary. The objective is for this healing and comforting art space to evoke thoughts on broader social issues.
